What were you facing?

If I remember correctly, the meta that you tend to play in likes to use a lot of armor ignoring stuff so I could see the changes being pretty rough for you.

And I agree with there being something wrong when Magnus peril's just as easily as some scrub sanctioned psyker...

You're memory serves you well!

I faced battle suit Tau. Very rarely did "All is Dust" even come into play. A big part of the tabletop reason I played Thousand Sons is the amount of massive AP adjustment my meta has and it was really the only way I could play marines. I felt like I was playing vanilla marines again (for survivability).

A few things felt too brutal, but one thing I did not foresee about perils is it is particularly hard on Scarab Sorcs. If you get 'lucky' and only take one mortal wound, then the rest of the game every wound that squad takes goes towards the Sorc.... he's not gonna last long in that case.

Id imagine tau is one of the cases where Rubricae are better then Scarab Occult.

All those D3 guns they can spam, kinda wasted on 1 wound models (and their basic guns are also not optimal for obvious reasons)

Was this entirely battlesuits? you would think that AP-2 bolters would help alot in that case.

Mind if I ask what all you were fielding? I would think that one of the biggest problem should we face with dealing with an army such as the tau is getting into range to rapid fire. Would the addition of rhinos help this at all? I know they would die quickly, but If they are able to plant a squad up close right out of the gate that might be worth it.

Also, would possibly a large squad or two of SOT's teleport striking and eliminating some heavy offensive units of theirs?

I haven't played any games in 8th yet, but I would imagine that when we get into range to rapid fire things would tend to not last very long.

Side note; Great synergy I just thought of.

Anyone else look at using Magnus in a large army of 1k sons with no vehicles, and including the Changeling?  Hes 100 points, any daemon princes, daemons, and Magnus would benefit from the -1 to hit friendly tzeentch daemons, and he of course can hide for a long time and cast spells we normally cant have access to naturally, stick him in a standard detachment as an HQ and it feels like he may actually be worth the 100 points flat for his abilities.

Its a thought I had. Dont know how point-effective it is but it may make Magnus a bulwark considering hes already very hard to kill....subtract 1 from hitting the big bugger and we have a heck of a thing.....

Edit; This would ALSO include any of our big baddies on discs! (Ahriman/Exalteds, Chaos Lords, or Sorcerers) something to keep in mind..... Annnnnd It also works on Daemon Engines!!!! Mauler, Forge, Defiler, and Heldrake..... Sounds like I need to make room for a Changeling....

Having looked at the screamers entry, I think that they are probably no longer very good anti-tank. I think that they are better suited to probably an anti elite infantry role now.

That being said, with as many attack as they get, you might do fairly well against most other infantry as well!!

3 games today.

#1: 75 Power Level vs. Orks

-ONLY WAR, 4 obj that were 2pts each and slay the warlord is 1pt

-1 big mob of boyz, 15 lootaz, 5 flash gitz with ammo runts, deffdread, various support characters, 3 helicopter things

-Ahriman died because I charged the coptaz and didnt know they had some sort of saw thing.. Owch, will never do that again.

-once i learned the flash gitz are just 1 Damage I ignored them. The predators ate the deffdread then all the lootaz. The rubrics and terminators murdered all the boyz and coptas

#2: 100 Power Level vs. Nids

-"kill points"

-I got rekt, ended the game on turn 5 with Ahriman in a corner with 1 wound left and the entire remaining bug force near him

-Black Staff is great, murdered a Broodlord bottom of turn 5. Nice to have the 4+ with re-rolling 1s.

-Horde mixed with Bugs is the optimal list for nids, BET ON IT. Entire game I was scared gakless. Bugs are back on top.

#3: 2000pts vs. Salamanders

-Dominated, nothing he could really do. My dice were rolling "ok" or average and still messing him up pretty bad.

-I was able to systematically approach his lines and focus fire on terminators, then assault marines, then mop up tacticals. We called it at turn 4 because the shop was closing.

Good things:

-After about 15+ games of 8th, 2 units of Rubrics with Soulreapers, on foot or in a Rhino, is viable against a variety of opponents. VERY happy.

-Scarab Occult should always teleport. Be sure to keep your army small to get that better chance of turn 1.

-Smite, while boring, adds up.

-Ahriman is a VERY appropriately costed psyker and against the Tyranids it was very important that he can attempt to stop 3 powers.

-Ahriman's +1 to Deny came into effect multiple times during the game against the bugs and the one with the Salamanders.

My experience with this army has been very positive and even though I only play 1 faction, each game has been different and fun (even the losses)

Soon I will share a big video batrep using fully painted armies, apologies for not doing any detailed write-ups but I have been too busy enjoying 8th.

It's nice to have the demo copies in hand at the store, yeah.. but lots of play time for me means that we aren't getting much business, which of course is bad for my shop. 3 games in one day? Nothing but Heroclix going on.. Very little foot traffic otherwise.

People are holding off on 8th edition and certainly not playing 7th. Sales are dead dead dead for GW at the moment. I got a crapload of preorders for the new stuff though. For the size of my shop, you might be surprised at our player base.

The plus side of me getting lots of games in is that folks who have been skeptical about 8th ed have been able to see the new edition at work. We haven't seen any of the DOom n GloOM on the innerwebz. Love it

Excellent news!

It sounds like we have a well designed and balanced list!

Fantastic, Rubrics will be central in my list for certain when I am not messing with some wacky variable builds.

I as of today have had an idea regarding a moving gunline.....

40 some odd rubrics, Magnus, Changeling, 1-2 disc sorcerers, and a couple Daemon Princes floating about the line.

I don't know how effective it would be but harming the princes, sorcerers, and Magnus would be Incredibly difficult due to the changeling, and the rubricae form a solid barrier in front with deadly weaponry.  Dakka fiends behind the line to abuse the Changeling -1 to hit, and the thousand sons re-roll 1's aura for invulnerables.

If you attempt to engage the rubrics you will have exactly 1 turn of melee before the princes and magnus fly over and engage to wipe out the charging units. (Exalted applied as necessary!)

It sounds like a fun/humorous list to run honestly..... and I may have to give it a shot. and I can fit it into a 2000 point game....its Interesting being able to use Magnus in a NOT crippled list this edition   ;-)

Edit ; Just did the math on it.

I would try for 40 rubrics, a unit of 20, and 2 units of 10, one disc sorcerer, changeling, Dakkafiend, Magnus, one daemon prince, coming out to around 1970, probably take an extra Rubricae in one of the units or toss in a couple flamers into a unit.

Changeling and Daemon princes and Magnus auras stacking across units is very interesting, but the Rubricae obviously wouldn't benefit from the -1 to being hit from the Changeling, the fiend, the prince, the sorcerer on disc and magnus all would...helping substantially in keeping them on the table.

Gonna try the Changling thing. I have a Gaunt Summoner from Silver Tower.

I think your plan will work. The only time I have had a unit of Rubrics completely wiped are:

-10 mortal wounds from Magnus the Red's Smite

-Genestealers charging

That is not specified so I would assume that's not the case. It only says that the unit has to be in range of the weapon being fired and that the defending player gets to choose the model removed.

This. Owning player selects which models are removed. It specifies somewhere but I can't remember.

I just hope there is overwatch clarification for weapons like flamers. Totally should be able to overwatch, if they get to you they would have been range and if they didn't it makes sense that the firing halted the charge.

It's in the choosing targets/removing models area. Dont even need to see the model your opponent pulls. I SEENT IT

The Flamers auto-hit and you need to check range for 8". Stop thinking in 7th ed context with Wall of Death because its not there. I mean no insult

I know you're right (rules specify you need to meet requirements of shooting attacks) but I've always found that silly given how the concept is everyone is unloading to stop a charge, and they'd pass through the range to get to you.

Either way, I'm sure we'll get the relic to allow Overwatch again.
