..::Kurama Reviews the Horus Heresy Series and Products::..

Recommended Posts

Very dynamic pose on that Deredeo, I modelled mine mostly stationary but it's a great kit regardless :-)

Thanks mate yeah my first attempt was static but I know my limitations now.

Also I have to ask is the format I'm presenting these Reviews in, helpful or annoying? I'm trying to keep it informal yet give a bit of a guide.

I'm up to changing the format but it depends on how I'm coming across, don't want to give too much stupidity to the community

Legion MkIV Reconnaissance Marines; Build

http://i1279.photobucket.com/albums/y524/Taron_James_Beer/Mobile%20Uploads/99590101261_LegionReconSquad01_zpstxmifoaj.jpg

To begin I have to forewarn, this kit is relatively simple and doesn't have much variation, one way for you to overcome this is in the fine detailing so don't be afraid to add extras to make these guys stand out more.

Now onto the build;

http://i1279.photobucket.com/albums/y524/Taron_James_Beer/Mobile%20Uploads/20160220_081926_zpsnp7bpi8a.jpg

so as always trim clean and all that junk, now I kept the bodies on the gates just so I had something to hold onto, my hands are a bit shaky from work (all the rollers vibe plates and :cuss have done a number on my hand stability)

http://i1279.photobucket.com/albums/y524/Taron_James_Beer/Mobile%20Uploads/20160220_083855_zps1fuyxqjg.jpg

next up attach the sniper rifles or shotguns, I found this allows a smoother line up for the other arms, once done add the Pauldron.

http://i1279.photobucket.com/albums/y524/Taron_James_Beer/Mobile%20Uploads/20160220_084735_zpsvvsuersz.jpg

next we add the backpack

http://i1279.photobucket.com/albums/y524/Taron_James_Beer/Mobile%20Uploads/20160220_085529_zpsvjscqrc8.jpg

now you can just throw on the heads but I decided to go for some bare heads to maximize the potential of having individual personalities within the 20 recons I've got.

http://i1279.photobucket.com/albums/y524/Taron_James_Beer/Mobile%20Uploads/20160220_090153_zpso5fw0kis.jpg

next I added extra details like the vox grenades and the mag locked helms

http://i1279.photobucket.com/albums/y524/Taron_James_Beer/Mobile%20Uploads/2016-02-20%2009.09.40_zpssk1z7wzz.jpg

then remove the models and add them to a base (note these are temporary bases) and yep that's pretty much the kit in all its glory

Deathfire

http://i1279.photobucket.com/albums/y524/Taron_James_Beer/Mobile%20Uploads/images-534_zpsuglk0l2g.jpeg

ohh how i loathe this book... and in all honesty I'm not jumping on any bandwagon with this one, it took me a month to read as I couldn't stand some of the plot devices that were used throughout this book. From poorly written characters to the worst possible form of scene jumping and leaving massive gaps in the story. This book feels rushed and since it's roughly based on the odyssey it feels to forced for a novel, it's trying to be an epic within the confines of 508 pages. Now a quick run through of the story, the surviving Salamanders are on macragge just hanging out in imperium secundus whilst numeon is being brutally tortured by a host of wordbearers that have an epic plan to use numeon to get to Vulkans corpse, after being left alone he casually escapes and comes across Aeonid thiel and the Red marked that are like bro you haven't heard Vulkans dead. They then proceed to capture the surviving word bearers and head back to Ultamar meanwhile narek former word bearer now going by kaspian hecht has a case of split personality and repressed memories because he's now a great bloke because reasons! Arriving into Vulkans little mausoleum numeon has a cry convinces his brothers to lead Vulkan back to Nocturne and bravely upsets Guilliman and the lion with his belief that his plot Armour should protect him through the warp.

After some terrible plot advancement they make it into the warp meet up with kaspian hect get chased by Death Guard and word bearers, lose 90% off their brothers get it on with deamonetts, have ferrus mannus and his magic finger try to cut open Vulkan, have magnus intervene and get them to Nocturne, have the death guard fleet which comprised a handful of ships decide we can take on a legion home world and a whole other load of complete bull:cuss which can only be covered by acts of faith as reasons, finally return to Nocturne then throw Vulkan into Mt doom sorry I mean deathfire only to have nothing happen until months later when numeon goes and walks off into the distance only to find Vulkan then walking around holding the spear embedded in his chest and be like ha I trolled you :cussers all this time.

This book had too much going on and was just a way to try tie up loose ends and make sense of a horribly written plot arc. I feel that any fans of the Salamanders should be ashamed of the treatment of their Legion and boycott such horrid writing. So out of 10 I'd say battle for the abyss is a better read and I'd score that 3/10.

now in all honesty I hated this book and found it hard to finish, so I'll do a pic dump and that's it, if you enjoyed it that's great I personally couldn't find anything redeeming about this read and wouldn't recommend it as really the whole storyline doesn't give you anything but a convenient way to kill of characters.

most of these characters appeared in the first third of the book then die by the end of the book George r Martin would be proud.

so sorry guys but this one was a flop and if you haven't read it pass up on it and put your money towards a better read like Betrayer or thousand sons etc. Or better yet take a photo of saved money and send said photo to Nick Kyme and say you will pay him not to write trash like this and that you'd much rather stories like Scorched Earth

yea deathfire was definitely not the best book

My roomate often comes into my room with coffe asking me if she needs to throw me into a valcano

She also really really likes to look me straight in the face  with her FULL  pokerface on and go  " It is also a hammer"

Dude thats brilliant! My fiancé knows that to mention this book around me is to be on the receiving end of a drunken rage fist! My little brother loved the book and we were arguing over the plot when I saw him last let's just say we never mention Vulkan in each others presence.

Magic finger scalpel and a hammer powered by faith.... Nick Kyme what did you do

My copy, many months after purchase, is still in my downstairs loo, and I can draw in the dust, with the insistence that I'm still reading it, which is why it hasn't made it to the bookshelf with the rest of my novels.

It should stay there in fact if you run out of toilet paper I believe it can be used in its stead.

I got to part 2 of the book before I started getting bored of it, then I'd be lucky if I'd read a chapter a month & as some chapters are 4 pages long (I'm looking at you chapter 26!) It was still too much garbage to process

I think nick Kymes style lends itself better to audio. I went to a BL open day and listened to him read a snippet from one of his books, and has he read it, you heard it as intended as opposed to the difficult read his work usually is.

I feel bad because he ain't a bad dude, it's just his writing style

I do agree with you, I personally loved the tome of fire trilogy for 40k and also loved the way he handled Scorched Earth, this however was an abortion. I can understand if you have a style you write to but a basic grasp of narrative is needed for books that should be a key plot point for a legion.

If it was Nemesis or damnation of pythos I wouldn't have cared as much but when your talking about a primarch a legion master and stuff you don't just use reasons faith or plot Armour to advance your story it's an insult to the lore of the xviiith and I feel a primarch that can revive and is near immortal could have been handled better and that a missed opportunity has occurred as our now cannon history is :cuss in regards to vulkan

So after weeks of wondering where the big fw order I'm expecting is at I finally found out ups have bee holding it so I payed 211 to get it released and should have it by the end of the week (my little brother owes me for bailing it out though)

So fingers crossed it only takes a day or two to get from sydney

Well there's a chance there's a B@C box at the bottom and there's other bitz and pieces and could also be a bundle of sorts.

There could also be another masdive box arriving from forgeworld with marauder bombers and other types of aircraft and of course let us not forget my favourite thing in.the world titans

That's less 'clues' and more 'telling us outright'.

and Raider Armoured Proteus

http://i1279.photobucket.com/albums/y524/Taron_James_Beer/Mobile%20Uploads/99590101236_ArmouredProteusLandRaider01_zpswaatu8ex.jpg

The Armoured Proteus, the resin beast now this bad boy is hefty on its own so I'm going to weigh this after I do my instructional building guide. So sit back light a cigar pour a scotch and if you feel the need lick the Computer screen and taste that tasty resin crack.

unbagging this bad boy, forgeworld know how to pimp your order they took bags and bagged components within the bags then bagged the bagged components, Xzibit would be so proud.

now for all you junkies out there here's the wonderful instructions for this product, considering it's only 3 pages it's going to be a pretty simple Build me thinks.

http://i1279.photobucket.com/albums/y524/Taron_James_Beer/Mobile%20Uploads/20160228_162342_zpsyzffigwd.jpg

next we have the side pieces of the hull, going to be fun to remove the casting gates without damaging the rollers but should be pretty straight forward.

http://i1279.photobucket.com/albums/y524/Taron_James_Beer/Mobile%20Uploads/2016-02-28%2016.33.58_zps6upa9wr5.jpg

The top hull section not extremely detailed compared to the MkIIb Achillies Alpha but it's still a good looking cast.

The floor (wow Kurama do you have to go to such lengths on the boring bitz? Why yes yes I do)

http://i1279.photobucket.com/albums/y524/Taron_James_Beer/Mobile%20Uploads/2016-02-28%2016.33.42_zpsy801zjam.jpg

all the track sections; note the second photo was taken as I found these parts of the track assembly in the other goodie bag.

engine block is a smaller scale version of the fellblade/glaive/Falchion you'll see in my next Review (snap spoiler)

http://i1279.photobucket.com/albums/y524/Taron_James_Beer/Mobile%20Uploads/20160228_162626_zpszkmmhein.jpg

The gun mounting housing gives that hull more details.

http://i1279.photobucket.com/albums/y524/Taron_James_Beer/Mobile%20Uploads/20160228_162700_zpsa7hjtsgm.jpg

and the dozer blade..... OK I need to rant here!

Now I work in Construction and I particularly have specialties in dozens and loaders, now I don't know why forgeworld designed this "dozerblade" like this, in no way can you move material or remove solid barricades yes its true to artwork but practicality dictates that this is not a dozer blade, im very very annoyed with forgeworld for this as the effort they've gone to a proper dozer blade shouldn't be hard to design.

In saying that I just received from subtle discords store the dark works a proper Land Raider type dozer blade which I may attach to this (if you'd like to see a review leave a comment as its a non fw product and im not sure if you guys want to see products from other companies such as mastercrafted or zealot miniatures etc)

pivoting turret mount, just a big hunk of resin, I will toy with removing the bolters and adding flamers but I'm not yet sure if I will.

http://i1279.photobucket.com/albums/y524/Taron_James_Beer/Mobile%20Uploads/2016-02-28%2016.33.22_zpsneqaxhfu.jpg

The Armoured casing for the sponsons great cast and I look forward to fitting them.

sponson mounts and weapons, I have spare volkites not sure if I should do a custom fit or hang off and build it as a legal entry.

http://i1279.photobucket.com/albums/y524/Taron_James_Beer/Mobile%20Uploads/2016-02-28%2016.33.10_zpsqw3hxweu.jpg

engine exhausts

http://i1279.photobucket.com/albums/y524/Taron_James_Beer/Mobile%20Uploads/20160228_162944_zpsotxtlbq8.jpg

front and rear plates

http://i1279.photobucket.com/albums/y524/Taron_James_Beer/Mobile%20Uploads/20160228_163004_zpsxktntl2d.jpg

coupling for the engine mount and rear plates.

not sure what these are exactly but I'm assuming they work in cohesion with the sponsons. Just realized they attach to the front plate and act as bearings! I'm a bloody idiot

http://i1279.photobucket.com/albums/y524/Taron_James_Beer/Mobile%20Uploads/2016-02-28%2016.32.32_zpsdvbiwig5.jpg

Some reinforced plating mounts

http://i1279.photobucket.com/albums/y524/Taron_James_Beer/Mobile%20Uploads/2016-02-28%2016.32.15_zpsfbrblahd.jpg

and finally some fiddly leftover details.

So all in all forgeworld delivered a great kit with no casting issues and im hoping assembly should be a breeze. If this works out I'll be ordering another for my militia list as a dedicated transport.
