The Noble and the Shadow: III

Thrice.

They stood on the wretched earth as the heavens wept, rain crashing down upon the armoured figures and the burnt ground. Both armed and armoured in their panopoly of war, comrades no longer. Words were exchanged, shouted across the desolate landscape. Battle followed soon after, as it always had. Predictable. Monomolecular teeth carved furrows through layers of armour and golden filigree. Kraken-pattern bolt shells burnt through plates of adamantium, micro-delayed explosives ripping apart muscle and bone. The energy wreathed edge of a gladius was slowed fractionally as it sliced through ceramite as if it was steel. By the time they paused, the shadow was on the ground. The noble, though swaying, still stood. One uninjured leg pushing down on the ripped chestplate of the shadow, the other barely working, merely mulched flesh held together by armour riddled by holes. The right arm held a sparking gladius at the shadow’s throat, energy singing the midnight plate of his helm. His left hand was missing, ripped straight off by a sweeping glaive. The shadow was by far a worse sight, left leg and arm gone, sheared off at the shoulder and groin. Two slices in his chestplate bled profusely, internal organs shorn in half. His weapons were gone, the haft of the glaive sliced through, and the pistol thrown away in a last ditch attempt.

The noble hesitated. The adrenaline slowly bled away, like the crimson from his wounds. It was over. The shadow grunted, before hammering his right gauntlet against his chest. A final salute to he who had bested him. The noble spoke first, the regal accent at odds with his behaviour and appearance.

‘I would have once fought with you. Before you forgot who, what, you were. All of you did. And now we have to put a third legion to the sword. You were right, you know. We were never broth-’

The noble would never speak another word.

Like a coiled serpent, the shadow acted. His remaining leg swept out, catching the noble’s wounded back leg. A vicious push, and the noble was falling. The remaining hand, previously held clenched across the midnight chestplate flew up, smashing into the inside elbow of the arm holding the gladius. He could feel the razor sharp blade penetrate an inch into his neck, before ripping out to the right as the noble’s arm flew to the side. Gravity took its course, shock and surprise doing the rest. The noble’s body fell down, as the short blade curled around. The noble collapsed in a heap of metal, gladius transfixing his neck, the blood stained tip emerging from the back of his gorget. The body twitched, the viscera on the blade spitting and hissing as it burnt away, almost as if enraged at killing its owner. The body continued to shudder, the electric current fooling the muscles into spasming.

The shadow could feel the wound in his neck open to the soot-stained air. A vein was open. He would be dead before the rest of his company could get to him. If they would even bother. The shadow glanced over one last time, the noble was still now, cobalt blue plate stained with blood and black. The shadow muttered some words, guttural accent seeming almost sorrowful.

I am sorry, brother.’

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So, part 3 of Noble/Shadow. I was bored, so I decided to do a 3 part Ultramarine/Night Lord storyline. Parts 2 and 1 will be done shortly. Eventually I'll also do a diorama for it, and put it all together in the HoH. I might also have to do a diagram for what exactly the NL did to the ultramarine. Granted, it would probably not happen, but I wanted the ultra to 'win' the fight. This storyline is probably going to talk alot about the 'brotherhood' of the legions, especially part 2.

If you didn't like it, please tell me why. CnC always welcome. Was just curious, and missed painting, so tried something different.

Edit. Also, 200th reply. Woot. Got further than my chaos thread laugh.png

looking good as usual Aeternas! i love the knights color scheme...

one thing struck me as odd in your roster though. why is the Persephone a gloriana class ship? i thought there were very few of the class and those were restricted to primarch flagships.

Thanks Wicced :) And good catch, I get what you mean. From what I had gathered, there were around one per legion, but possibly up to 2 for some legions. Changed it to a retribution class, might have another look later.

Anyway, finished my first Night Raptor, and finished building Eris (not Eros...that would be something else...), the typhon. I may add some more trophies and flayed skin.

Thanks Pearson smile.png Going for a similar thing to the fellblade, just trying to work out where to put some more flayed skin, or brass now I have it.

I really don't like how the skeleton on the front looks...

Other than that I might do another corpse on a hook, probably a zombie, or, maybe the other SA from Curze's base

Also, to add just for the record, the gates for the side/track pieces are in the most downright irritating place ever

It could be said that the skeleton looks as if it has just been stuck on, though the marine on hook looks spot on; perhaps because of the slight curve to the back making him look more naturally slumped against the hull as opposed to flat against it, like the skeleton?

Yeah, I know what you mean. Well, time to rip the skeleton off and look at other corpses. I am quite proud of the marine on the hook, and I think I'll certainly repeat it with other guys. I was really suprised at how well the SA head fitted.

And...it seems I've been busy. Got the diorama for the knight base finished, just need to write some fluff for it. Betrayal most foul! Plus I need to chose a legion for the marines getting slaughtered.

Just to clarify the poses. The loyalist getting knifed was not aware the NL was...morally challenged...until he felt the knife in his neck. That's why he appears to not have been trying to fight back.

Looking good! thumbsup.gif

The NL operative seems a little plane though, like he's too similar to the other legionnaires (paint will probably help some, but maybe a bare head could really help set him apart?).

I eagerly await the accompanying fluff smile.png

looking good, i like how casual the stab to the throat looks ;)

i agree on the night lord looking a little plain and i have a suggestion for the bolt holes on the wounded, i like slanting the outer edge so it looks more like a crater than a straight hole.

just my 2 flayed loyalist skullsbiggrin.png

Nice diorama, brother. I like the concepts behind it. However, I feel like some of the posing is a bit static, especially in the main Night Lord, which is unfortunate, since he's kinda the focus of diorama (well, besides the big, hulking Knight, of course.) One of the biggest things I see is the way he's stabbing the other bloke. There's a concept in comic book art that says you never show the moment of impact of a punch, but rather immediately before or (preferably) after, because it feels stronger as you see the follow through and the target go flying backwards or what have you, the consequences. I feel like the same thing could be said about the stab, or slash. Right now, it feels a bit weak to me because you're showing the moment of impact rather than the consequences of said impact. I'd bring the blade back a little bit more so it looks like he's just murdered the other dude in cold blood rather is in the middle of killing him, if that makes any sense. I'd also switch his legs out so that he's stepping in the direction of the stab rather than in the direction of where he's shooting, as that simply seems more natural in my mind. Still a great diorama as it stands, but I've seen some of the kitbashing you're capable of and it doesn't quite have some of the polish your other work possesses.

Really like that corpse on the Typhon, by the way. Looks really awesome. :tu:

Firstly, thanks everyone! Tried something different, think it paid off. I've tried to bling out the operative a bit more, and I've given him a bare head to differentiate him. Also Wicced, thanks for the advice and hopefully this looks a bit better! Psycho, I had just typed out a full reply but then my comp crashed, so I'll reply properly later, sorry. Here's a few slight changes.

Question, do you guys think the other auxilia will work on the typhon like this? Or is he too far out of the main corpse part to be 'noticed'. Alternative is I chop/bend the other leg and mount him (on the tank ) where the skeleton was.

I love the idea for the diorama!

So to build a bit on what Psycho said, what if the marine to the left was in the process of falling over, knife blade buried in his gorget, while your operative is unloading his bolt pistol magazine into the poor bastard in front of him? It wouldn't take a big shift in the positioning of your three models.

But It'd be super action-y and I think you could make it look cool as hell.

Thanks Flint, Pearson and Marshal!

Psycho, I see where you're coming from. In the end I've just blinged up the front a bit more, and think that's enough. We'll see how it goes once there's some paint there.

Now, about the diorama, Flint and Psycho. Firstly, thanks for the feedback :) I get what you mean about the general... 'unresponsiveness' of the murdered marine. Pose wise on the operative himself, I had tried to set it up as if he had stabbed the marine, then there was a pause as the lead marine turned around, allowing the operative to step forward and brace, then slaughter the other marine. That was my justification for the NL pose, at least. However I think both of you are right about the 'murdered' marine. And both of you have suggested showing the 'aftermath' :D so I think that might be what happens. Irriatingly, those were my last three 'moving' legs that I can find right now, which limited me somewhat. However I think now I'm going to go for the buried blade in gorget (thanks flint), falling down. Question is, should he be kinda falling down on his knees and toppling down on his front, or falling backwards? Forward might be more realistic, but that's gonna be some hard legs to get right. I'll see how it goes. But thank you both for the advice, think that might make it look...smoother.

Back to update time! (I apologise for the amount of photos here, but I have a question). So, another Night Raptor and Semi-vigilator guy are getting their paintjobs. One of the diorama marines is also getting his turn in the spotlight. Irritatingly, I realised he actually has a pretty nice pose, if he wasn't dead... Raising the chainsword so its pointing and one badass challenge issuing marine you got!

Also, as I said...there might be a grey knight WIP thread soon...

Now, onto the question. I've salvaged Tyberos' body from my bitz box, and realised he looks damn cool with a WE head. So naturally, I have no idea now what to do him as. Originally he was going to be one of my Blood Ravens, but equally he could make a nice WE (in late-heresy armour), or a Night Lord, or maybe even a VIth legion breacher-terminator if I changed the shield.

So, votes! Blood Raven (probably the hammer/shield set up), WE (any really, might change something for an axe), NL (claws and stuff, maybe even switch helmet out with a NL one), or VIth breacher?

Terminator looks really cool, especially with the chainfist/thunder hammer loadout. Might be something to save for the IV Legion March of the Legions?

In any event, I'm eager to see how you change up the diorama. The murderized Marine falling down on his knees would look pretty cool.

Are those Hunger and/or Slake sans claws? Just removing the fins should be enough for a chain fist lightning claw combo Shield and hammer looks great too.

They are. Unfortunately I bought them off a guy who lost/broke the claw part. Always loved the claw parts, so was a pity.

Finished the raptor, and also nearly finished another breacher with some mediocre freehand on lower leg and wrists. The time called for a happy family photo :') D'awwwwwww

Feel like I'm finally getting somewhere with this force...even if there isn't a full squad of anything yet.

Also, finally entered my Knight in the store birthday painting comp, with a few others. Came third, but when 1st place was this masterpiece I can't even be angry... (not mine, rights go to Toby from local store)

And one last thing, sorry. Since no-one in my blood ravens thread seems to be voting, it falls to you. Which red do you think suits them more? Bright n glossy, or dark and slightly duller. In photo they're both a bit brighter than in real life.

Huh, don't know why I didn't notice your BR thread sooner dry.png.

I vote for flat red, it's closer to their vidya-game representation.

And such a beautiful family photo, how they've all grown up tongue.png.

Your knight looks fantastic on that thunderhawk, if only that could be his actual base!

I was holding off on linking it until I actually had a marine painted or something  but damn, secrets out. Still, thanks for the vote, seems flat red is winning 2-0

Well, take your Astartes, feed him the blood of loyalist lapdogs, and soon he'll be your very own psychopathic murdering machine! From initiate to atramentar in just 200 years!

Hah, I think some people would take offense at that, especially when I had to move him into combat... But soon enough AoP will swing back round, the thunderhawk will be repainted (maybe EC? Not sure), and he'll be striding on it once happily, accompanied by a Typhon, Fellblade, maybe another Knight, and all manner of infantry!
