The Observer's 30k Stuff - Holguin Conversion

Recommended Posts

He's looking rather stunning. The only point of contention I might take with him is the use of the Primaris head -- looks a bit too elegant to me -- but asides that... absolutely lovely. The melding of Abaddon's torso with Typhon very much changes the entire feel of the model, and the addition of Loken's cape... lovely.

Opum Mechanica

We wait for the Emperor's Call

and yet he is silent.

We have received the Warmaster's Demands

and yet he offers nothing.

We remember our Martian vows

but Mars burns.

So we chose neutrality,

like our ancestors taught us.

But now Horus pounds at our gate

and demands entry in our halls.
He mistakes our neutrality for weakness

our silence as subservience.

Know this then, Horus, disgraced son.

We know no master but the Divine Helix.

We know no law but the Lex Genetum.

We know no enemy but ignorance.

We serve none but Mankind.

This world is ours and ours alone.

Know then, that we now open our vaults.

Know then, that we now unleash the forbidden

Know then, that the Helvetians go to war

And House Basilea marches with them.

Hey folks, today I have a B&W pic of my first of ten Alpha Legion Marksmen Veterans :)

@Pearson73: Thanks mate, he certainly is one of my fondest conversions ever. I am waiting for a posable set of legs for my knight, but he is all cleaned and the greenstuff chainmail is already drying :D

@Soldier of Dorn: Cheers mate, I figured a true son of Dorn would appreciate the IVth brutality the most ;) I can see your point about the helm actually, and it was one of my initial worries, but once you can actually hold the miniature and rotate it around in your hands a bit, you notice that the curves flow very naturally into the layered curves of Abaddons chestplate. I also like the Mark IV-esque/Justaerin aesthetic the Mark X helms have. I had several bare and half-bare heads at my disposal, but I wanted to keep Uragan faceless, because to me he is the prototypical Iron Warrior, a fully enclosed, half mechanical beast that only knows the path forward. However, I will give my best to add the roughness and grit of the IVth while painting! The idea to stick Abby's torso on anything else came from The Fenpyrean's Forge's IG account who very recently made a beautiful conversion of Barban Falk by sticking the torso on a pair of Iron Tyrant legs.

@Bjorn Firewalker: Thanks man!

Here is a final picture of the Warsmith before I hit him with primer tommorrow:

pma52av.jpg?1

Well, that is all for tonight as I slave away at the knight and recover from Fasnacht (A local carneval-esque 3-days long festivity that involves copious amounts of drinking, dancing and merriment). C&C is, as always, much appreciated. Have a nice day!

Hey folks!

@Pearson73: Cheers man! The head is probably my favorite part of the Styrix knight (next to the huge volkite gun that is) :D Painting Vanus as we speak!

@Vairocanum: Thanks mate! The kakophoni kit is great for Mark IV conversions, even if a bit pricey. Concerning the warsmith, have a look below ;)

A few WiP pictures of the Warsmith. It has been a veritable joy to paint him (Painting IW always is for me), and I am more than halfway through. The armour is more or less done and only needs varnishing. I have debated adding a bit more rust or verdigris to the armour, but decided against it because I enjoy the aesthetic of fire-blackened, forged Iron. In my mind, the Death Guard are the rusty/corroded legion, while the Iron Warriors are the good ol' trusty AK47 (An apt comparison I read somewhere once) that is dinted, scratched, scuffed, blackened with oil, grease and fire, but still kept in proper condition. Now, I only need to add the white dots to the lenses, finish the black fabrics and add a freehand or transfer on the cloak. I will probably go for either the Iron Skull or the Unification Era emblem of the IVth legion. I will also add some heat discolouration to the melta muzzle.

As usual with my Iron Warriors, I like to muddy the lines between the colours. The brass, black and dark iron are very close in terms of tone and opacity, which makes the miniature appear like one large, monotone mountain of steel that is broken up by warm, dingy yellows and glowing reds. Only a closer look allows for the viewer to separate brass, steel and black from each other.

Anyways, I hope you liked this small update. C&C is, as always, very welcome and appreciated! Have a nice day :)

Great progress on the Warsmith, especially the glowing eye on his breastplate and the gore/weathering on the chainblade. The blurring between colour boundaries is certainly a quality I admire in your Warriors, it lends them a very gritty look and, as you say, becomes even more rewarding for those who spend the time to look a little closer.

Hey folks,

@Pearson73: Thanks man, appreciate the kind words! :)

Today I have quite a varierty of update pics! First of all, a bunch of size comparison pics with the IW praetor. Note, the figures on the left are placed on a piece of cork of the same thickness as the one that is part of the Praetor's base.

YpyxaED.jpg?1

Praetor next to an Imperial Guardsman from Volg-Hive (More about him later).

LcSTjWG.jpg?1

Next to a Blightlord Terminator.

pB3NFie.jpg?1

Next to my repose of Konrad Curze.

lLbgkvv.jpg?1

Next to a WiP progress primaris based truescale MK V astartes.

BDvyU5l.jpg?1

Next to a regular sized astartes.

As you can see, he is quite the big and chunky fella! This was achieved by lenghtening the shins with 2mm plasticard, as well as spacing the room between hip and torso until I was satisfied with it (No exact measuring was involved here).

Now onto some more stuff. A friend of mine has recently started DMing a Dark Heresy game which I am part of. It is still very early stage (We had only one session yet) but the first game was amazing and I have decided to make figures for all the characters (Of which I will also make updated figures as the game goes on probably). There will also eventually be a thread where I will post a written story of each session including some shots, fluff pieces etc. The group consists of five members: A techpriest affiliated with the cult of the divine light of sollex hailing from the forgeworld of Lathe-Hadd(me), a ranged-style, mindwiped assassin, a noble-born psyker hailing from a family that has ties to the Lathe Worlds, an adept hailing from Volg Hive and a Guardsman hailing from Volg Hive. Have a look at the last two.

vEd2C3k.jpg?1

PfyJ9JE.jpg?1

The figures are still very early days in terms of painting, but both me and the players are very, very happy with how they look already. The Guardsman still neds his face, hair and backpack finished, as well as a few more washes on the metal. The adept will retain his black armour, but there will be pale gold trim and royal-purple clothes. I will also experiment with freehands in order to decorate the papers that he carries with himself.

That is all for today. C&C is, as always, very much appreciated and welcome! Have a nice day.

+++Ancient Warchant of Knight House Vukonar, the House of Grey Wolves+++

1YDNTBN.jpg?1

Terrible warriors we are

Armed with searing light

Bearing roaring thunder

Casting a hail of iron

Mighty are our forms

Forged of densest steel

Painted in mountain slate

Hemmed with pale gold

Yet we walk in their shadow

The shadow of the Great Ones

The Wolves of grey mane and claw

We walk in their terrible shadow

zjVqoEf.jpg?1

Bound we are to them

By ancient oaths

Oaths older than His rule

Oaths stronger than steel

Bound they are to us

By laws older than the Imperium

Laws breakable by none

Laws immutable like death

Yet we embrace each other

With open arms we cherish

This terrible kinship between us

In this time of terrible darkness.

xvl29fv.jpg?1

All that we have cast away

From both mind and body

To atone for ancient sins

To bear sin's two-pronged crown

What have we become?

Giants of war, lords of iron

Men fallen, titans arisen

Masters of the forbidden

Wardens of the feared

What have we become?

Machine

Synthetic

Inhuman

So that others must not

-----------------------------

Hey folks! Painting is comming along quite nicely! However, now that the poseable titan legs have finally arrived, I can now share this wip with you. Spicy one, innit?

@Vairocanum: Cheers man, glad you like'em! Actually, there will be quite a bit of truescale based on primaris! While this one will be a Carcharodon, the rest will probably be Fire Hawk-ish...

@Inquisitor Engel: Thanks mate! Posing is definitely one of my favorite parts of the hobby as each pose can convey so much.

@Soldier of Dorn: Thank you battle-brother, I am glad you came around to the helmet! He is finished, just waiting for the snow on his base to dry :smile.:

Alright folks, that is all for today! I have been going through my backlog for a while now, so expect some updates to my CSM thread, but also some more Blood Angels, Alpha Legion and Iron Warriors in this thread! C&C is, as always, appreciated and welcome! Have a nice day.

Another update on the Knight Styrix!

As you can notice, I am not using the Styrix Head, but a regular IK one. On one side, I want to use the Styrix head for another project in the future, on the other hand, I want to add some mechanicum detaik to this head and use it. I will also add some chainmail coats underneath the shoulderpads, as well as some chains with skulls and helmets hanging from the shoulders. Should be some fun :)

C&C is, as always, very much appreciated :)

The Knight's base looks great! Whose Rhino is being crushed underfoot? A Loyalist Chapter's, meaning the Knight is a renegade or traitor? A Renegade Chapter's, the Renegades to be granted mercy for their misguided behavior after they surrender and embark on a Penitent Crusade? A Chaos Chapter's without the spikes that distinguish them (possibly because the traitors are infiltrating a Loyalist position), meaning the Knight is loyal to the Golden Throne?

If I get distracted by something I should be waiting to work on, I blame you. Really nice work. I especially like the fist.

Hey folks, thanks for the many kind comments!

@Bjorn Firewalker: The knight is a firm loyalist, so the rhino will be a traitor machine! Probably either a World Eaters, Iron Warriors or Death Guard engine, but we'll see. Cheers mate!

@Kizzdougs: Thanks a lot man!

@Subtle Discord: Cheers mate, means a lot comming from a titan such as you! But, y'know, indulging oneself every once in a while isn't that bad, 'tis the eightfold path after all ;)

@Brother Lunkhead: Thanks mate!

@Vairocanum: Cheers man! There are actually two big things comming; the knight and the BA spartan I previewed some time ago :)

@robofish7591: Thanks man, glad you like the changes! I plan to keep the styrix head for the comming warlord-like titan.

Alright, today only a small update on the Styrix:

3GuIXnN.jpg?1
CpOpgMn.jpg?1

I added some chains to the shoulders. The greenstuff with which they are attached is drying so I'll be able to fix them fully in place by tommorrow. I will also hang some skulls and helmets from them probably. The long, still dangling chains will either be shortened or affixed to the chestplate.

That's all for today folks. It isn't much but life's been a bit busy lately. Hope you like it anyways! C&C is as always much appreciated and welcome! Have a good day.

XX

Target dispatched.

Unencrypted XXth legion vox transmission, unknown legion asset

The ruins were silent. Deceptively so. Hive Mankorn had been the target of intense Zone Mortalis engagements between combined forces of the Dark Angels and White Scars, as well as the Iron Warriors and the Alpha Legion. Gruesome close range engagements, which particularly suited the traitors, had continued for nearly two standard weeks until IVth legion artillery had leveled the city. Now, isolated warbands prowled through the ashes and ruins; the dust still choked the skies.

Geront and his rag-tag squad of Ist and Vth legionaries moved silently through cover, always scanning the surrounding for potential enemies. With the familiar weights of sword and bolt pistol in his hands, he instructed his squad with short vox-clicks. Silence had to be maintained. The Hydra was everywhere. He knew that.

Aim

The Dark Angel cast his gaze towards the hive's monolithic remains that peeked through the dust and clawed at the pale sky. Nothing moved there, at least nothing his suit's sensory array could make out.

Inhale

Geront led his men across an open field through use of battle-signs. The plaza must have been some sort of market place, judging by the carts and smashed crates. Such open spaces always made his gut clench with cold paranoia. It was here that they were fully vulnerable. Still, they crossed the plaza unmolested.

Exhale

Geront turned to the White Scar demi-sergeant in order to delegate further instructions. Earlier they had spotted a former supply site from a higher up vantage point. Maybe they could find some help or ressources there.

Click

The White Scar's head imploded in a mist of gore and fatty brain tissue. Whatever projectile had hit him had travelled further and shattered the knee of a Dark Angel.

"Cover! Go for cover!" Geront immediately bellowed. From behind a ferrocrete block he watched in grim disgust as the unknown sniper executed his fallen brother.

Aim

"Kira, report! Report!" Geront spied over his cover multiple times, but the dust made it almost impossible to tell from where exactly the bullet had come from. The west side of the plaza probably, judging by the blood spray of the two corpses.

Inhale

"Kira, Emperor damn you, what is the auspex reading?!" Geront's twin hearts were beating hard. The enemy did not take pot-shots, did not try his hand at lucky hits. This was a being of precisest calculations.

"The dust is blocking it, sergeant!" The White Scar yelled over the vox "I cannot say how many enemies there are! Oh wait, maybe this.... Got it!"

Exhale

"Well, what is it?!" The Dark Angel shot a couple of times into the dust, hoping to either land a very lucky hit or simply rouse the enemy from their hiding spot.

"One, it's only one!" Kira exclaimed as he fumbled with the auspex "But he is flitting all over the pla-"

Click

Kira fell to the ground, chest ruptured and hearts scattered in shreds across the floor. Another shot split the auspex just before it hit the ground.

"Feth!" Geront cursed as he retreated through the dust, looking for Beyl and Aaron, his remaining two brethren.

Aim

"Battle-Brothers, to me! Beyl, Aaron!" Geront bellowed as he reloaded his pistol. The cursed dust clung to everything and made most of his armour's sophisticated targeting systems useless. Damned Iron Warriors and their phosphex shells. At this rate, he'd probably die long before he would find his brethren.

Inhale

"This is sergeant Geront of the Dark Angels; I recquire immediate reinforcement from all loyal forces present in my vicinity!" He knew that nobody would hear him. They hadn't met anyone on days; they might as well have been abandoned in these ruins. Yet still, he had to hope.

Exhale

Geront stumbled upon two figures crouching in the dust. With raised weapons he approached them, before he recognized the familiar insignia of his legion, his brethren. Both were slumped against the wall with two narrow holes above their hearts. He hadn't even heard their deaths.

By accident, Geront turned around as the wind picked up and cleared some of the dingy dust. Across the plaza, far and above from where he stood, he could make out the faint glare of deep-crimson lenses.

Click

I know we should probably focus on the models when commenting, but that last bit of background was incredibly well written. Like, not only incredibly well written by the standards of bolter porn, but incredibly well written, period. I love narratives with a recurring, rigid structural element like that

Now one teeny, tiny suggestion, because I am such a smart-arse:

(...) Geront led his men across an open field through use of gesticulative battle-cant. (...)

You might be better off just calling it battle-sign, as that seems to be an established concept from the lore and also sounds a bit more idiomatic.
