The Anvils of Konor - Champion Grune Thrael painted!

Hey guys,

On Monday evening I finally finished the Tycho HH remake, and though I feel some details lack a little definition, I'm pretty damned happy with the end result!

Besides, every time I try to sculpt something new or challenging, even if it doesn't look 100% I am slowly making improvements to my technique.

In that regard, I think this guy has presented one of my biggest sculpting challenges to date.

Really keen to hear what you think of this latest guy and what requests you might have too! I'm planning on a few more but am seriously lacking mk2 armour, which will be essential for the next works! :'(

Looking fantastic so far!

Thanks man! I hope you like the finished product :smile.:

That looks gorgeous! Looking forward to seeing all the details sculpted on!

Thanks Vairocanum! I wanted to strike a good balance between the grandeur of the Legion and the utilitarianism of the Great Crusade. I recon I got that balance just right!

It actually was originally a generic Blood Angels captain, but then the golden age GW guys created some fluff for him for their batrep, and his name -and the on-the-fly-concocted fluff- stuck!

Great start so far!

You're bang on there Augustus. I did some research after a few people mentioned the origins of 'Tycho' and it's a nice little anecdote.

Hope you like the finished version!

Fantastic conversion work.

That chainmail tutorial will come in handy. :smile.:

Thanks a lot Markus! I hope it does. Any other tutorials that would come in handy?

Awesome work on Tycho, looks incredible so far! You have nailed the Tycho stance perfectly.

Thanks Sister. I think I had to make a few tiny compromises to the original stance to make leading elements look realistic, but the sacrifices were worth it with the end product I believe!

Great work dude! He will look even better on a goblin green base!!

Pose is spot on, shall look forward to seeing his little toes and fingers!!

That's presuming it'll ever see paint! Hope you like the final result buddy!

That's so cool, you've improved on my first ever miniature while keeping the feel of it bang on.

It deserves paint!

Wow, Mirbeau!

Thanks for forcing everyone to scroll for five minutes. Was it really necessary to quote that whole post, just for that comment? No. The answer to that question is no. :p

@ Capt. Jack: dude, I'm sooo stoked to see your work on the Khan. I'm positive you can pull it off, for sure. Just take your time and allow yourself to learn as yu go, like you did on all those awesome mini's that went before. :tu:

Hey guys!

Since finishing 'Master of Mankind', an absolute blinder of a book, I decided to put together a Unification era Custodian based on one of the sections of the book.

As necessity dictated, far from the opulent Custodian armour we see after unification, during the war within the webway and indeed up to the 41st millennium, the armour worn whilst the Emperor and his thralls during unification was very plain indeed!

As such I have removed the majority of detailing from the armour and guardian spear, leaving only the wings on the blade and the magnificent eagle collar.

You may have noticed a few deviations from the stock kit; Deathwatch Death Masque head (inspired by Ra Endymion), Stormcast legs (in future I will use the solid greave without kneepad), classic plastic terminator pauldron shield, and the beginnings of a sickle mag for the guardian spear.

Other than smoothing down the areas where I removed detail with some putty, sorting the left arm, adding a cloak and perhaps some lightning bolt detailing (I'm unsure if the Raptor Imperialis was only used directly after the Unification Wars or throughout?!), I'm confident that he would be ready for basing and painting!

Really keen to hear what you guys think. What you like, what you dislike, as I'd be keen to make a squad of two of these chaps to possibly use when I return to Blighty!

For the Emperor!

@Mirbeau; I'm delighted you like my take on the classic! Will daub him with fresh colours when I return to England!

The problem is the heat currently in Guangdong! It saps me of energy! Nonetheless, I will try to crack on and slowly craft my interpretation of the Warhawk!

In the meantime, I hope you enjoy today's little offering!

The custode is looking badass! I think he would look good with some battle damage on his armor and some scars on his face. I believe the Raptor Imperialis was used during the Unification Wars as well. Looking forward to seeing more!

Great stuff! Not in the same league as the Khagan but still impressive! I think is a great representation of early custodes, nice to see the use of Stormcast legs; I think you are right in regards to the different leg greaves but these still look good!

I'd like to see some unification lightning or a raptor on him. The chest lightning on the custodes is a little busy, perhaps use two very sharp bolts each side of the chest!

Why not check out the Custodes transfer sheet, see if anything floats the boat there....

Very cool miniature made even better by the interesting time period he represents. I would have never thought of making a unification era custode, yet I am in love with the idea now! I'll be watching Closely!

I like what you've done - very different from the highly barroque custodes models, but still recognizable as a custodes.

So, would the pre-unification costodes  be the emperor's bodyguard?  As I hadn't thought there were costodes before the emperor was confined to the golden throne.  Then again, I admit to not knowing any of the background developments that accompanied the 30K model range.

~ Anhur snorted and spat a thick, bloody gobbet to the floor. He had lost two fingers as well as several teeth. Steam rose furiously from his overheating body before being snatched away by the wind, his gene-hanced metabolism fighting to repair the numerous deep wounds left by the envenomed blades that had successfully pierced his armour and bitten into flesh.

He sighed and used the guardian spear to stabilise himself for a moments respite. The foe had been routed and the stench of death loomed over the frozen plains. He surveyed the aftermath of the battle and could see many great columns of black smoke near and far, the smell of scorched flesh and cordite resting at the back of his throat.

A brilliant, white light crept into his periphery and Anhur Suleman pivoted and dropped to one knee in fealty, eyes lowered as the Master of Mankind strode into view. ~

Hey guys,

I've been toiling away in the Imperial dungeons this to finish the Custodian, and though I feel the dents in his chest armour could look better, and the cloak maybe needs a little more motion/depth (something I somewhat sacrificed to show a burn hole though the material), I am very happy with the finished result!

It was a first for a couple of things, namely tattered robes, applying damage using a scalpel/drillbit and then the fine sculpting on the chest and buckle. I fellblade I've learnt from this experience and should be able to put these skills to use on the Warhawk!

Hope you enjoy! C&C welcome!

Thanks dude! I hope you enjoy the finished article!

I have to echo Vairocanum, that fella is badass. Very cool to see one a custodes like this and I definitely would love to see more.

Also need to look into that book.

You really should! Gave me such a passion to build this chap! Should I make a full squad? ;)

Thanks again for your help with this guy man. For the next one I'll play around with different custodes legs with full greaves!

Glad you like! It's a great era that is very under explored imho. Hope you like the finished job!

I believe they would be his elite bodyguard! I loved the idea of a stripped back custodian with more utalitarian armour.

That looks awesome! I personally prefer deeper scratches in the armor as the lighter ones seem closer to glancing blows. Either way the finished product is fantastic, the facial scars and raptor especially! Looking forward to the Khan!

Looking fantastic, as always your greenstuff work is impeccable! Any plans for more pre-unification concepts?

Glad you like! I want to do maybe a 5 man squad of Custodes, each with re-arming thrall and tech-adept to see to their battlefield/repair needs!

Thanks Vairocanum. It was the first time applying battle damage with a scalpel so I maybe went a little easy! I'll do some work on the Warhawk hopefully this week.

Brilliant work!! :tu:

Glad you like Maestro!

Still loving it! He looks like he came out of the meat grinder and is ready to do it again.

Is that bit of fluff yours or from the novel? Definitely makes you admire them more.

That's the idea! The fluff is mine (got a little help). I'm trying to write interesting little stories to accompany my work and add depth to what I'm trying to represent!

I always enjoy good fluff. I definitely like how he is recovering from battle, a bit worse for wear, but at the sight of his liege he bends his knee without a fuss. Something about that is just splendid.

Hey guys,

Apologies for lack of posts lately, I'm procrastinating much more these days and watching series/films with my flatmate most evenings, but I am working hard this week to get a big project finished...

That aside, I finished Julius Kaesoron (awaiting a more appropriate head and cloak to add in due course), and I wanted to see what you chaps thought!

Was a very fun little project, and I got to practice a few techniques which is always nice!

I'm glad you like it. It's nowhere near the level of some of the stuff on here but as they say, the Imperial Palace wasn't built in a day! :P

Look great there Old Chap!

Excellent work on the rope braiding! It's great to see you pushing your skills used on the classic redux models and stepping up a gear!

Even the BA head is growing on me, probably because I'm staring in amazement. That sword really does look a wicked yet elegant blade and the claw looks ready to gut Gabriel Santar....

~ A veteran of countless close quarter boarding actions throughout the Great Crusade, Brother Sergeant Tullus 'the dour' was an asset in the fight against the traitorous dogs who ravaged the Ultima Segmentum during the Shadow Crusade. His aptitudes and diligence during such a war of attrition saw him swiftly elevated to his current rank.

Tasked with the most deadly of missions with with highest chances of failure, Tullus showed his valour and bravery time and time again, capturing many XIIth and XVIth Legion vessels against the odds.

Though the sons of Guilliman were in dire need of additional vessels to combat the fleets scouring the 500 worlds, the heinous acts and blasphemies commited by the World Eaters and World Bearers condemned their ships to core overloads, therefore guaranteeing their obliteration.

Thus Sergeant Tullus quickly assumed his moniker; his duty to his Primarch and Emperor to spill the blood of former allies and enact the annihilation of scores of ships. Ships that had once spread the glory of the Imperium and light of the Imperial truth to all corners of the galaxy. ~

Good evening guys,

This chap kinda came out of nowhere. I had the idea to combine the raised Black Templar gorget with a mk3 plastic torso and the idea of using this for a breacher seemed obvious!

After adding an additional armour plate to the groin, I considered whether it would be more suitable to use the torso for a Siege Breaker or for a breacher, and as you can see the latter concept prevailed.

It has been so long since I've given my XIIIth Legion any love, so I decided to jazz him up to join the ranks of my Ultramarines.

In Terra's name I can't remember where the blade is from, but I thought it suited the Greco-Roman aesthetic perfectly (and it's the right length for the scabbard too!), and I added an additional layer of plating to the upper torso and a tabbard under the hanging plates. Perhaps I should have done pturges?

Either way, I'm very happy with how he's turned out, and am keen to hear what you chaps think!

Courage and Honour!

Julius is looking great! I am a huge fan of that lightning claw

I'm delighted you like him Terimus! The claw was a little fiddly, but I think it's quite unique enough for a peacock of the IIIrd Legion!

Aye, that claw looks great, as does the sculpted rope - really good texture and sense of weight about it.

Thanks Pearson73! I need to practice braiding more often to get more consistency; perhaps I need to find that 'sweet spot' in the curing process where the putty is malleable enough to manipulate, but set enough to lose ductility...

You've captured the style I was going for with the illustration perfectly - he looks great

Coming from the illustrator himself, that's high praise indeed, thanks! Really LordCommanderEidolon sourced the bits, so his squirreling ability fit your vision very well!

Lovely work, there, Cap'n. :)

Thanks Augustus! I'm glad you haven't lost interest in my crazy projects yet!

Thanks Eidolon! It's been fun to work on some named characters. I can't wait till I have the full extent of my bitz at my fingertips and the miniscule waiting times for parts so I can get even more creative!

Kaesoron looks awesome! I need one to lead my Emperor's Children!

Thanks Hushrong! I do commissions, so don't hesitate to send me a DM! ;)
