Brother Diaz is looking spiffy, dude. Nice work. The blue you chose for his Crimson Fists colour is on spot. I also like the 'crimson fist'.

BTW, I like the extra details you're including in the pictures in this thread. Very Blanchesque. That key though, is featured more and more prominently, recently. Is that a hint?

Cheers, guys! :)

@ Bjorn Firewalker: Haha, yeah -- I normally hate meta jokes like that, but it seems easy enough to both implement this particular element and not have it ruin the overall coherence of the squad in this case, so yeah...

@ Auggs: You're giving me way too much credit, buddy -- I just wanted to include some kind of prop in my INQ28 pictures and happened to have that key ring with half a dozen old keys, so I though "key" = "top secret Inquisitorial vault", and decided to include them in my photos, along with those John Blanche playing cards.

@ Kizzdougs: Cheers, mate -- coming from the undisputed master of pitch perfect Space Marine models, that really means a lot! :)

I know Augustus hates repetitions like this, but let me at least bring over the last picture from the previous page, so people actually know what we are talking about:

My thought process went like this: "Wait, another update with cool miniatures?? YES! Oh I've seen them before. They do look great though. Damn. I could watch it all day - so many details. What's this about my hating stuff? Nah, that's just for needless quoting. Looking at cool pictures is what it's all about. And I'll just take that key to Kraut's heart as a subtle hint."

So here's another short update: The Iron Hands Watch-Brother has already been undercoated, and maybe I'll be able to get him painted this weekend. In the meantime, I have already built a base for him, complete with a half-buried Necron skull and spine, to fit the underlying Xenos skull theme:

deathwatch-iron-hand-base-wip.jpg

And here's another WIP of a possible next member of the Killteam, provisionally from the Celestial Lions, wearing a suit of Recon armour:

deathwatch-celestial-lion-wip-1.jpg

Yeah, I know: Technically, it's basically a Primaris Reiver. But after seeing a particularly nice Reiver-based Deathwatch Marine converted and painted by Jeff Vader, I realised that the stripped-down, sleeker armour matches the "Special Ops" look of the Deathwatch rather nicely -- I also think it makes sense for the Killteam to have a recon expert.

As always, let me know what you think! :)

I like that your pictures went from including keys (as in for locks) to including keys (as in the keyboard).

It's to typing love letters with.

*SELF-FACE-SLAP* STAHP IT!

Alright, enough with the jokes and on to serious matters: that killteam is shaping up to be rock solid, buddy. The idea to make the base thematic to the marine's chapter's enemies is very cool.

Re: the Reiver. Damn. That's the coolest one I've seen so far. Anywhere. I lost interest in them when someone posted a picture of their ankles painted pink, as if they were wearing 3/4 pants and boots. But you made me see how they are intended: as light armoured recon troops. Nice!

I love the lion detail on his belt buckle, btw. Awesome idea.

Also: what's the Inquisition doing in the Velsen sector? :D We need some more fluff!

Cheers for the feedbac, guys! :smile.:

Geez, what is it with you lately? Some kind of spring fever, perchance?

Regarding the Reivers, I still contend that their fluff doesn't really make all that much sense to me, but I like the stripped down look of the armour, and like I said, I thought it was a nice match for the killteam to have a recon specialist like that. No pink ankles on this model either, I can promise you that much

As for the Velsian Inquisition, phew, there are all kinds of narrative threads there, many of which mostly exist in my head or DexterKong's, admittedly. Just off the top of my head...

  • there's a lot of politicking around the question of whether to consolidate the sector's defenses (a move advocated, for example, by the Golden Legion, Velsen's resident Astartes chapter), or to declare an Imperial Crusade into the region of space known ad the Veil of Impurity, a move advocated by some of the glory seeking Lords Militant of the Velsian Astra Militarum. This all against the background of a sector governor who is ailing, and has been for quite a while.
  • there are the reverberations of the "Quelling of St. Berthold", a massive Inquisitorial operation to purge the world of St. Berthold when an unsanctioned psyker accidentally tore the veil and daemons infested the planet's primary hive. The Inquisition has tried to keep the whole business under wraps, but its consequences can still be felt in many places.
  • there's a radical faction called "The Fragmentarians" operating in the sector, seeking for all kinds of occult and obscure means to transcend mortality and allow for devout servants of the Emperor to become his undying arbiters.
  • and there's business as usual, all kinds of cults (such as the Children of Impulse, the Cult of the Eternal Garden, the Imago Lodge,...) and conspiracies.

@ hushrong: I basically chose the Celestial Lions because they have a bit of an African influence, and I chose the Marine's face for its decidedly non-caucasian features: I like the idea of using the killteam as a means of introducing some much needed ethnic diversity into the 41st millenium, plus having slightly different skin tones on the members of the killteam also seems like a great way to push the impression that they are all from different chapters. That being said, I realised too late that the Lions have a bit of a history with the Inquisition -- oh well, I'll find some kind of explanation for it, I am sure

In the meantime, I am hard at work on the Iron Hand. Take a look:

First and foremost that Iron Hand looks awesome! I really need to get my hands on a kataphron box. I want to try and use the tank body and guns for a rapier and all those other bits will be great for marines. I did use some of their bits I got online for my warpsmith. That torso on the primaris looks brilliant and more so with all those extra touches like the extra front-plate tabard. Is the necrons eye glowing blue just like the Iron Hand as well?

And damn you, now when I look at that plastic head on the Celestial Lions bare head I've imprinted Samuel L Jacksons face over it. Now I imagine him angrily lamenting that there are too many mother :censored:-ing xenos in this mother :censored:-ing imperium. Jokes aside though I do like the your reasoning for bits you are choosing to show some diversity and the added challenge to paint different skin tones as well.

Cheers for the feedback, guys! :)

@ The Kataphron box is basically worth it for the amount of conversion bitz alone -- and I've only really been using the kit as conversion fodder so far, to be honest ;) As for the blue glow, remembering the Dornian Heresy and the various ways in which the Necrons and Iron Hands seem to be intertwined, I thought using the same colour was a nice tongue in cheek meta joke ;)

@ Bjorn Firewalker: Cheers! :)

So here's another update on the Iron Hand, whom I should be able to finish this weekend:

brother-vorlik-ulrach-pip.jpg

As always, let me know what you think! :)

Iron Hand looks good.

The Reiver armour is really fun to play with, I think it looks great.

I agree though that the terror troops fluff around them is a bit off to my taste, I choose to see them as more classic spec ops pathfinders.

Celestial Lions is a nice pick too. Love the belt detail. I think they only upset a particular bit of the Inquisition. Maybe this guy is in Deathwatch hunting 'ork snipers'...

Cheers for the feedback, guys! :)

Man, that's brilliant -- maybe I can play around with that for the model's base? That would be pretty cool...

In the meantime, here's the almost finished Iron Hand. Meet Brother Vorlik Ulrach of the Iron Tenth:

I'll be leaving the last few touchups for tomorrow -- for now, I am already pretty happy with the model. Here's Killteam Ulrach so far:

killteam-ulrach-1.jpg

Oh, and I've also tweaked the pose on the Celestial Lion a bit, thanks to some very helpful feedback from fellow hobbyist euansmith: I think he looks a bit more sneaky and agile with his head turned this way:

deathwatch-celestial-lion-wip-4.jpg

As always, let me know what you think! :)

I'm loving this killteam, and recently acquired some deathwatch, so this is really teasing me to get on with them. That Iron hand is brilliant. I wanted to collect Ironhands, i even bought Ferrus but in the end i knocked it on the head because of the amount of time and money i knew i'd want to sink into them converting each one.

I also have deathwatch now though so i could try going to town on one of them instead. Your finished (or nearly finished) marine are inspiring. My only issue is your Iron Hands Axe.. i have the same one left over from making a Grey Knight Techmarine. I want to use it but i don't like that bit in the middle where it narrows, it really bugs me. Ill have to challenge myself to incorporate it modified somehow on one of my Deathwatch after seeing on yours though.

Always a joy to see your updates.

Edited by Pandoras Bitz Box

This is turning out to be a fantastic kill team.

Particularly like the use of the blue lights. Tying the axe into the bionic eye. Great use of spot colours in the ground, chest and light on the back pack.

Loving these guys and enjoying seeing the character of the different chapters come through and their various dead enemies on the bases.

Thanks a lot for the enthusiastic feedback, gents! ;)

@ Brother Lunkhead & Bjorn Firewalker: Cheers! :)

@ Pandoras Bitz Box: Ahh, I know exactly what you mean about the axe -- I am honestly not too in love with the part myself, but then it was the best possible option I had in my bitzbox, and I wasn't sure I'd be able to actually improve it without ruining the part, so I left it as is -- I did add those blue special effects to make it look a bit cooler, though ;)

@ Auggs: Oh yeah, a guy with a big gun (probably a heavy bolter, if only for how nice and massive it looks) is definitely in the cards! Right now, it looks as though it'll be a Lamenter doing the job ;)

@ Krakendoomcool: Cheers, mate! Like I said, those blue highlights were a bit of a cop-out, trying to make the axe look better -- but I am rather fond of them, to be honest ;)

So I have a longer painting session scheduled up for tomorrow, which should allow me to paint the Celestial Lion. However, I couldn't resist painting one of the parts I knew would make or break the model in advance. And I am pretty happy with the result. Take a look:

celestial-lions-shoulder-pad.jpg

Of course I didn't see the huge splodge of wash towards the lower rim of the pauldron until I was looking at it blown up by several hundred percent on a screen -- the area has been cleaned up since. Oh, and 'Aren' will be the name of the battle-brother, by the way.

Here's the chapter badge I used as reference material:

celestial-lions-chapter-icon-inverted.jp

As always, let me know what you think! :)

The Iron Hand looks great! Really great! I love the conversion work you've done and the paint job is ace. I really think if I make a Warpsmith I am stealing a lot of queues from Gedaras and your Brother Ulrach! Larger mark of armor and using those Kataphron bits are awesome.

I also like how the turning of the head changes the look of your Celestial Lion! The freehand work is also great!
