Playing with another scheme for a little diorama I want to throw together - the adhd is real huh...

Rainbow warriors are pretty fun.

This lil guy showed me a couple of things I need to work at:

1) straight lines need straight brushes. Might need to buy some nicer ones to nail that fine detail.

2) a decade of painting black power armour for tabletop means I'm very behind on knowing how to layer volume in colours. Been watching YouTubes and practising like crazy (this is the 4th blue guy I painted this week!)

Next on to some industrial basing!

Playing with sprue, wire and zip-ties to see what I can get to look good.

Did a proof of concept on the Sergeant:

Not totally happy with the wire, so might swap him to another base later.

Also had a crack at some ruins using cork:

In other news, tried another different scheme on a AoBR Marine, including some freehanding:

I think the urban cork base came out great, and I'd never have guessed the "sprue base" was sprues

The Imperial Fist came out well - well done on the free-hand icons.

Thanks for the kind words :)

Feels like I need some Vaseline on the camera lense, but I guess the photo also shows where I can clean it up a tad. Practice practice practice.

Yes, modern camera lenses are sufficiently sharp that they'll highlight any mistakes or short-comings rather painfully, even if you can't see them yourself. I once shot one of my models I was really happy with with a professional camera set-up for (DSLR with a 105mm macro lens and flashes through umbrellas). Let's just say I only did it once.

Yeah the freehanded imperial fist symbol is good, a tiny bit of tidying up and it’ll look spot on

the bases are cool too, it’s something I don’t put enough effort in myself.. I might have a go with some sprue and zip ties

Those are really nice.  Though,  a thought is that the hazard stripes would stand out more if the piping wasn't also in yellow - perhaps in blue or copper instead?

I have two concerns in for that:

1.  Presumably, the rest of the base will be grimed up as well, again diminishing the contrast.  Or, if one grimed up the pipes more than the rest of the base, it seems a bit odd that the pipes would be considerably dirtier than the rest.

2.  I think the pipes being a different colour adds contrast to the base to keep it interesting.  By griming that down, you are kind of losing that bit of interest.  By going a different colour you can keep that while also enhancing the contrast of the hazard stripes.

I think the bronze is a good idea - hit it with a light (as in amount of pigment, not tone) green wash and then some of your general grime and I think it will do exactly what you want it to.

Fulfilling the promise of the thread title, I threw together this beastie in a fortnight for our flgs' painting competition:

Love the old metal models, such crispy lines and classic aesthetic.
