Desert Eagles wip

Recommended Posts

Cheers guys, thanks a lot, makes my really glad! Yes, asmodeus have already pointed out where you can find a mini tutorial. I have improved and changed my methods slightly since then, mainly the blackline is a lot less black and i try to put the damage more around the edges. But it should give you a starting point at least, it's back on page 5. Not promissing anything, but maybe i can do one that is more up to date once the chappy dread is finished...

It’s not a whole lot more done since the last set of pictures, but i have put some paint all over the dread for the finished colour scheme. It’s of coarse merely a basecoat at best, but anyway. I have also worked some on the plasma glow on the big wings on the sarcophagus. I’m shooting for a very subtle glow, I don’t want it to take over the entire mini, I just want it to be there. (The plasma coil is not painted, just given a few washes of some unknown blue mixed with hawk turquoise. It will have a lot more contrast, going further up to pure white once finished.)

I do have some problems figuring out what to paint on the shoulder pads…or whatever they should be called on a dread. The DE-badge and crux feels kind of abundant already being painted on the top armour plates. Guess I should have thought of that before putting them there. So, suggestions are welcome.

Here is a very early wip photo of one of the sergeants bike. I realize there may not be tons to be said about this pic, being in such an early stage, but i felt like posting it anyway. The front fender with the eagles on the sides however is getting there... and probobly won't change all that much from here on. But there's still work to be done on the fender (purityseal and studs for exampel). Is the blacklining still to prominent? I have reduced the width (compared to the beaky biker) to abouth half. I have also darkened the basecoat of the white a little bit to achieve some more highlights. It doesn't really show in the pics, and the colours in the pics are a bit funky aswell. It's dark outside, so there wasn't any good light, but the middle picture is closest to the truth.

The rest of the mini is merly given it's first coat of paint and some washes in the recesses.

Where did you find those eagles for the fender I have been looking for something very Similar

I think some freehand of my face on either side of those weapons would be quite fitting. hehe, dope stuff as usual, I really do need to get my marine project started, between you and starks, I don't think it will be long.

Hey, cheers for the love! :)

@Todd: Thanks. Yeah, i'm probobly going to go with that. The soaring eagle will probobly be painted shaped like a badge/shield, so that it looks unison with the other symbols on the dread.

@Lord Wartooth: Those fenders are simply ravenwing totems/banners cut to fit and sanded down to about half the width (otherwise they were looking a bit bulky).

@Asmodeus and Wiplash: The glow was glazed with several very watered down layers of an old bottle of blue (from some odd company called nitro) that looks sort of like deadly nightshade mixed with hawk turqoise. I then went back and painted over some from the opposite direction with elf grey and desert yellow. Mainly because i thought the blue got too much. I want a subtle glow. Glad you like it! :)

@Illnar: Correct! :)

@MFV: Haha, yeah, with or without the mask? ^_^ Oh, i'd love too see what you would do with some marines, with your sculpting skills and all.

@Starks: Cheers! I've been watching your thread, and it looks fantastic as usual.

Worked some on the canon...only the metallics and purity seals are unpainted besides some touch ups here and there. I'm fairly happy with the result.

Not really showing in the pics, but i used crimson for the shadows/blackline on the green parts of the canon. It's an old trick, but gives some funky results, i kind of like how it turned out.

C&C appriciated. (The pics are slightly washed out in colour...it's dark outside and all that.)

That plasma cannon glow is perfect. And choosing a blue lense to highten the plasma glow works great. I really like how you even put a dust effect on the lower inside portion of the purity seals. Very realistic. ;)

I know its still wip but I think the shield for the Eagle emblem needs to be just a touch more substantial. Right now the proportion seems a little off.

Coming along smoothly. :tu:

Thanks Todd. You know, i nicked the gloss thing from you over the lense, which works wonders. At least it sure photographs well after that. :) Anyway, i went for the same colours as the glow, felt reasonable that the lense would pick up some of the colour....probobly should be a whole lot more blue than i have put on, but i'll leave it like that anyway.

I know its still wip but I think the shield for the Eagle emblem needs to be just a touch more substantial. Right now the proportion seems a little off.

Substantial as in it needs to be bigger, yes? I can agree that it got a bit small. My original plan was to have 2 smaller shield on either side of the DE-badge, but it didn't look quite as good as i had imagined when i put the basic shapes there, so i took them out. I don't think i can repaint it altogheter as i use a fairly opaque technique when i freehand. So there's probobly a good chance it will show through the paint if i start all over again. I can ofcourse add some sort of trim around the edges if that was what you were thinking about, or think of something else to balance out the fact it got a bit tiny. Thanks for the feedback.

I got an idea in my head that studs would be great for the other shoulderpad. I think it's fitting with the rest of the mini. Gives a somewhat more rough and brutal apperance, i hope. Anyhow I can't remove the studs, they're glued on. I'm not really sure about what colour to use. i'm leaning towards either keeping them orange as shown below or paint them white.

Also a very wip of the base. Is it to bland for the dread? I'm unsure...

The eagle profile on the shield is the perfect size, but the shield itself needs just a little bit more of and edge to it. You know what I mean? I'm being knit-picky but thats because everything else is almost flawless.

I think I would have a better idea of the base if you placed the dread on it, dry, just to make the comparison. But I think Dreadclaw might be right in adding a little bit of a dark piece to the base, maybe some patch of dark sage brush or something. I can't tell for sure yet though.

Great job, brutha. ;)

Cheers guys!

I like nit picky, so keep 'em comming. Yeah, i understand what you're saying now. (But instead i have no idea what a sage brush really is...i'm guessing some sort of vegetation B) ). But expanding only the white on the shield is an easy fix, so that'll be no problem.

About the colour for the base, it'll be a bit darker once it get finished. Compare with these examples (there will be some static yellow grass on the bases. Just havn't gotten around to it yet = read, i fear the spray can with matt varnish too much...you all know it's bound to screw up the minis for certain. Also, the terminator still isn't finished...)

I can't dry fit right now, the dread is glued on the pot, and i won't remove it untill i finish painting it. I were mostly curious if the base would look to plain, with nothing extra on it compared to the rest.

  • 2 weeks later...

Thanks mates!

Been busy with the hollydays and all, so I haven’t had much time for painting, but here is the progress on my dread. Not much left to do really. The metallics are unpainted, however, I read a tutorial on metallics that claimed sealing with a matt varnish should be done prior to painting with metallic colours otherwise they will end up plain and dull. Makes a lot of sense imho, so I’ll do it that way. I can cover the skull beneath a shoulder pad so the skull won’t be ruined by the varnish. Only problem now is that it is way below freezing outside, so the dread will most likely be put on hold until the weather allows for the use of spray cans.

Besides the metallics, only the whites on the power plant (+ purity seals) and backward armour plates at the top needs painting, the green on his stormbolter and a few more coats on the base. I should be able to do that the next painting session.

Although still unfinished I felt it might be a good idea to post the dread once more for some final suggestions, if you guys feel something should be altered or improved.

C&C appreciated, cheers!

PS. I did do some minor changes to the eagle emblem on the PC-arm. The pics however was out of focus, and i'm just to lazy right now to take new ones.
