The Sekhmet+HH Emperor's Children: Imperial Fists Deathwing 12/4/24

The Praetor looks the bomb as per, but I do have a nitpick (it does happen occasionally!). The red cape, although painted nicely, doesn't really work for me with the rest of the model. I'm not sure why that is, but the red just looks out of place. It's a bit of a weird criticism, and more about personal taste, but I'd have gone with a cooler colour, more than likely an Incubi Darkness built up.

It's all still painted fantastically as per though. Keep it up and I might really have to swap over to EC, as although I'm supposed to be painting Ultra's I'm not really feeling them....

Thanks for all of the kind words, everybody!

I'm hoping to get the Anvillus finished tomorrow, so hopefully I'll have some more pics to share soon :)

The green gems look good.

Thanks, bro. I feel like they might be a little bit too bright, but I'm glad to hear that you like them.

O.O wow, that praetor though, just WOW.

Thanks, mate! I'm pretty happy with how he turned out, glad you like him too.

:wub.:

Can I get that praetor's phone number please? I'd like to marry him.

EDIT: Wait a minute: that cloak and backpack are from the BaC chaplain! What a magnificent conversion! *Where* are the WIP pics of it?

Hahaha, glad you like him. I'm not sure if I actually took any WIP pics. I worked on him over a few weeks so the progress was so incremental that I never took any pics. I'll have to go back through my album and have a look to be sure. And yes that is the Chaplain's cloak, except for the bit on the right shoulder which is greenstuff.

First off love you ECs. I know you have already posted it but I have no clue as to what page it was on, could I have the recipe for your gold?

Thanks, dude! The gold on the EC is really easy. Basecoat Gehenna's Gold, wash with Agrax Earthshade, and highlight with Runefang Steel.

Hoooooly crap! That praetor looks amazing!!!

Thanks, bro!!

That praetor! Love it and his armor mix. Everything about him lets you know he is the boss!

Man, he is giving me chills.

Thanks, dude! I'm glad you like the mix of bits. It took me ages to decide on which armour bits to use, but I'm pretty happy with how it all came together.

The Praetor looks the bomb as per, but I do have a nitpick (it does happen occasionally!). The red cape, although painted nicely, doesn't really work for me with the rest of the model. Thanks, mate! And thanks for the critique, I get what you're saying about the cloak. Red and purple don't really work that well. I went with the red because I felt that it was the most regal and martial colour choice. I wanted to play up the idea that the III Legion are the Emperor's chosen warriors, bearing his symbol the Palatine Aquila, and representing him and the Council of Terra throughout the wider galaxy. Personally I think the main problem is with the green gems. They're a bit too bright, and combined with the red of the cloak they make the mini look way to colourful.

I keep mooshing the Like button, but it will only let me give you one, which is entirely unsatisfactory for this level of amaze :sad.:

Haha, well then, I'll just have to keep posting pics for you to like...

Loving the look of that guy with his stolen Eldar sword, at least that is what I presume it to be.

Did you spend long working on the pose for him or did it all fall into place?

Thanks, bro! Yeah, it's an Eldar blade taken as a trophy during the Great Crusade. Many of the III Legion's warriors were well know collectors of trophy weapons taken from particularly impressive foes. I image that the Praetor defeated either an Autarch or wraith construct of some sort and claimed the blade because of it's obvious quality and lethality. In games I'll be using it as a master crafted Paragon Blade.

I took a bit of time with the pose and tried many, many different heads/helmets/weapons/cloak etc.

Thanks again ;)

I've had a few people ask me for tutorials/recipes etc. so I decided to take some step by step pics of the BA. I've put them is spoiler brackets because there are quite a few of them... :tongue.:

After starting with a Chaos Black spray undercoat, I gave the armour a couple of thinned down coats of Khorne Red until I had achieved consistent coverage.

http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l522/kizzdougs/DSCN3937_zps6615cksh.jpg

Next up I gave the armour a wash with a mix of Drakenhof Nighshade and Tamiya Acrylic Paint Thinner at about 1/1.

http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l522/kizzdougs/DSCN3938_zpsfnp5m8rk.jpg

Once the wash had dried I sponged the armour with Blood Red (modern equivalent: Evil Sunz Scarlet). As you can see I was fairly liberal with the sponge. I also removed the right arm to make the sponging easier.

http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l522/kizzdougs/DSCN3939_zpsxorylnfw.jpg

I then neatened up the armour using a mix of Abbadon Black and water, at about 1/2. I use this technique of 'black lining' on most of my mini. It helps to add some definition and really makes the mini 'pop' from a distance. As you can see I painted the mix into all of the cracks between the armour plates and also into any battle damage that I had added.

http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l522/kizzdougs/DSCN3941_zpshputao8m.jpg

After the 'black lining' I used Abbadon Black to paint all of the areas that weren't going to be red. I could have just painted the other colours straight over the top, but using a black base coat usually produces better results.

http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l522/kizzdougs/DSCN3942_zpsceuypetl.jpg

At this stage I painted the Legion symbol on the shoulder pad using Abbadon Black. I've got plenty of DA decals lying around (who doesn't?), but I struggle with decals on the curved surfaces of power armour shoulder pads, so I generally find it easier to freehand many Legion symbols/squad markings etc. When freehanding basic symbols such as the BA icon, the trick is to water down your paints and go back afterwards with the original base colour (a mix of Khorne and Blood Red in this case) the neaten up any mistakes.

http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l522/kizzdougs/DSCN3943_zpsvugq7yii.jpg

Next I gave all of the parts that I wanted to be gold a coat of Retributor Gold. This is the new GW 'base' gold and gives much better coverage than the usual GW metallics.

http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l522/kizzdougs/DSCN3944_zpszdnwan23.jpg

I then painted all of the steel coloured areas with Ironbreaker.

http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l522/kizzdougs/DSCN3945_zpsblmcwxwg.jpg

These areas were then given a wash of Nuln Oil.

http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l522/kizzdougs/DSCN3946_zpsbe874fkv.jpg

Once the Nuln Oil was dry I washed the gold areas with Agrax Earthshade.

http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l522/kizzdougs/DSCN3947_zpskxc0zi4s.jpg

I then move onto the chainsword. I started by making sure the it had a solid base coat of Abbadon Black. Once I had a good base of black to work on I painted the yellow stripes with Iyanden Darksun (modern equivalent: Overland Sunset). These stripes don't need to be particularly neat because they'll be fix up afterwards.

http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l522/kizzdougs/DSCN3948_zpsv7rlein5.jpg

As mentioned the stripes were neatened up with some Abbadon Black. Usually I would put more effort into making sure the stripes were as perfect as possible, but because I knew that the chainsword would be weathered I was happy to leave them a little messier than usual.

http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l522/kizzdougs/DSCN3950_zpsbeiu6yyd.jpg

Next up I used some Runefang Steel to highlight all of the gold areas. This isn't essential, but I always do it because like the 'black lining' it helps to make the mini 'pop.'

http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l522/kizzdougs/DSCN3951_zpsztxtifhj.jpg

With the gold finished it was time to move onto the weathering. For this stage I used a sponge to apply some Abbadon Black to strategic areas. As you can see the sponging at this stage was more precise and carefully placed than the original sponging of the armour.

http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l522/kizzdougs/DSCN3952_zpsrw8xaugd.jpg

The black areas (holster, pteruges and bolter casing) were highlighted with Mechanicus Standard Grey.

http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l522/kizzdougs/DSCN3953_zpsml2eudet.jpg

On to the eyes.

I started by painting the eyes with Snot Green (modern equivalent: Warpstone Glow).

http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l522/kizzdougs/DSCN3954_zpsavulk8ww.jpg

I then added some white to the green, about 1/1.

http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l522/kizzdougs/DSCN3955_zpsfuix2qua.jpg

The 'glow' below the eye lenses was painted with some watered down Snot Green.

http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l522/kizzdougs/DSCN3956_zpsfvjjjdri.jpg

I then added some blood to the chainsword. I used a mix of Abbadon Black and Tamiya Clear Red, about 1/5 (thanks to poom for the recipe  ).

http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l522/kizzdougs/DSCN3957_zps5phu6th0.jpg

The Base:

I started with a mix of Rhinox Hide and Troll Slayer Orange, about 1/1.

http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l522/kizzdougs/DSCN3959_zpsewgwwhfm.jpg

I then added some white to the mix and dry brushed it on. Again, I was a lot less careful than I would usually be because I knew that the weathering powder would cover any imperfections.

http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l522/kizzdougs/DSCN3960_zpsjwbdopay.jpg

Some more white was added for the final dry brush.

http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l522/kizzdougs/DSCN3961_zpstfukqyb3.jpg

The legionnaire was mounted on the base using some super glue. This is the finished product minus weathering powder.

http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l522/kizzdougs/DSCN3962_zpska2bna38.jpg

And the final product. Ready to hurl the traitors from the walls of the Emperor's Palace. I've used FW Aged Rust on the base and the warrior's lower legs etc. I also used some Black Soot on the vent of the power pack.

http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l522/kizzdougs/DSCN3963_zpsjqzqdxyz.jpg

Thanks for looking

Loved this tutorial! Looked back through your many many pages, and couldn't find one for your EC. Any chance, when you next paint a legionnaire, to give us a step by step like this?

Keep up your totally awesome work :)

Hey guys,

The Anvillus is almost finished (yay!), and I've started working on my next distraction :smile.:

All that is left to do is give the claws/legs an additional highlight with Runefang Steel and then add some weathering to the thrusters/stabilisers.

http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l522/kizzdougs/DSCN4050_zpskdyostce.jpg

The base is done! Yes, that is a conveyor belt made from a Baneblade's tracks...

http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l522/kizzdougs/DSCN4051_zpswwfhuidq.jpg

There is something to be said for the process of painting hazard stripes. It's almost therapeutic... maybe I should be collecting the IVth Legion instead of the IIIrd :tongue.:

Her is my next little distraction. I've had the Khârn mini lying around for ages and finally decided to use it for something. It took me ages to finally decide on a character to build. I was considering either making my own interpretation of Nassir Amit, a Son of Horus Reaver Centurion/Praetor, or the World Eater Praetor that I finally decided on. I think I might still get another Khârn mini and make a version of Amit at some stage...

He is still definitely a WIP. I need to finish off the Butcher's Nails, smooth out some green stuff, and add some more details.

http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l522/kizzdougs/DSCN4048_zpsyg1kcm1r.jpg

I'm really looking forward to getting to paint this mini once it's fully built. I'm also keen to build him a nice raised base featuring some defeated foes.

I'd appreciate that as well. No reason. (I've changed to Emperor's Children...)

Yay, a World Eater! And as per your usual standard, he's already looking fantastic -- that Bloodreaver head is just a perfect fit for a World Eater, isn't it?

My one gripe with the model is that the spear, while beautifully crafted, seems a tad too ornate, for lack of a better word, for a World Eater, and I might have gone with something a little more bluntly aggressive. But I am pretty sure your paintjob is going to sell the weapon, so start painting already! ;)

Loving that model and posing and really looking forward to seeing him with some paint on.

Regarding the spear I think it is fine, many World Eaters would maintain weapons to keep them in good killing order. Sure he could have even taken it from a worthy foe.

Whoops... I forgot to post some pics of the finished pod...

Here they are

And here are some early WIP pics of the XII Legion Praetor. I've decided to try out the alternative colour scheme, but if it doesn't work out I'll just paint over the red with the tradition blue. The blue would definitely contrast better with any blood splatters

Yeah, I've had fun looking through the AoS kit looking for suitable bits. I agree about the spear, but it was the best I could do with the bit I had. Hopefully the paint job make it look more appropriate.

Thanks a lot, mate! He has been pretty fun to paint so far, so hopefully I'll get him finished soon.

THE TRIDENT RELIC!?!? AWWWW YISSSS

Haha, yeah I couldn't decide how to arm him, but then the trident/relic option just came to me.

Brutal looking world eater. What do you use for the studs on the pauldron?

EDIT: I'm an idiot! I meant studs, not pteruges! I'll go hide myself in a corner now :tongue.:

Thanks, bro! The studs are actual 'apples' from a model train shop. I bought some years ago and I don't think I'll ever run out of them (There are thousands of them in each bag, and I bought two). I just use the GW pin-vice to drill the holes and then I use super glue to attach them.

Gaaaaah!!!!!!

Hahaha, I hope that's a good 'gaaaaah' :P

Is it wrong that I like the flyer base more than the drop pod or the praetor? :tongue.:

Hahaha, not at all. I like the base too.

Thanks for looking ;)

Nice, the dreadclaw looks slick. Great job and a beautiful ride for your new guys. Kudo's to you for ploughing through even though it seems it gave you less joy than usual.

The World Eater looks great. Although I do think the brass on his shoulder pads could use a little more of your usual steel highlights, to make it contrast more with the red - a 'problem'  (if you want to call it that) you wouldn't have with the usual blue.

Just got my hands on these goodies...

http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l522/kizzdougs/DSCN4066_zps3ghriylu.jpg

10 Phoenix Gurad Terminators

10 Palatine Blades

1 EC Contemptor Dreadnought.

Now I just have to decide what to actually do with them. I think I'll probably build the Phoenix Guard as actual Phoenix Guard and use them in pre Heresy games (the don't really fit my Loyalist theme). I already have a unit of Palatine Blades so I'm thinking I'll make either Legion Veterans or maybe Legion Seekers from the new minis.

Let me know if you guys have some ideas for how I should utilise the new minis :tu:

As always, epic! You also said you were bored painting the anvillus but I'm grateful as I now know where to put what colours :smile.: just need some decent undercoating weather!

What's up next for the III as you can never stop painting them :tongue.: join the dark side and go crazy with some Kakophoni :biggrin.:

Thanks, bro! Hahaha, I'm glad my struggle will make the process easier for you. I'll probably end up doing some fallen Emperor's Children at some stage, but to be honest there are many other 30k projects that are a lot more tempting. Pre Heresy Emperor's Children are without doubt my favourite Legion by a long way, but after Laer/Istvaan they fall down the peking order quite a bit. It's not that I don't like Slaanesh, he/she/it is probably my favourite Chaos God, I just prefer the III Legion back when it was the Emperor's most favoured.

Thanks, mate! I haven't highlight the brass or the red yet, so hopefully they'll have a lot more definition once the highlights and black lining is done :)

Sweet as per the usual!

Thanks a lot, bro! :)

That Praetor! I can imagine him killing so many with that sweet trident (very gladiatorial) and his friend Ron B. telling him to lay low for awhile.

The drop pod also looks real good. I like seeing the legion colors arrayed on large vehicles.

Hahaha, glad you like the Praetor and his trident :)

Thanks for looking ;)

Have you ever thought of converting one phoenix guard as a custodes terminator guard? I was thinking of getting one and converting up a grey knight force halberd into the custode signature gunglaive and possible switching the tartaros pads for something more traditional (gw termie shoulders) with eagles? Idk, just an idea I had for some bodyguard, little expensive though :P
