The_Chaplain
You are the master at posing legs, Chaplain! Thanks Geektom! removing chaosy taint can be a real pain in the rear sometimes, but some of the model detail like the trim work can really make the effort worth it. i love the top heavy look of your sprinting crusader, very cool. Thanks Argent aquila. Well, no model progress to show (weekend was jam packed with other stuff. But I got my birthday present early this year, and just had to show it off! A relic sicaran and a caestus assault ram off of eBay! Jackpot! Now all I gotta do is find my misplaced clippers and I can start working on these bad boys! If anybody has an instruction sheet for either model they could PM a picture of, that'd be great. Neither came with one, haha. The_Chaplain
Spoke too soon, it took me longer to find my clippers than it did to assemble the Sicaran's main chassis: :cuss that is a nice tank. Fun to put together too. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/253082-chaplains-hobby-misc-red-gobbo/page/14/#findComment-3827013 Share on other sites
The_Chaplain
FInished the raw assembly of the Sicaran (actually finished it the night of the 6th, but taking pictures at 2 in the morning isn't ideal.) The heavy bolter sponsons aren't glued. I want to magnetize them so that I can potentially run the tank without sponsons and maybe even make Deimos pattern doors for them so there isn't a gaping hole in the side of the tank. One of the autocannons was pretty badly warped, hot water bending broke it clean off-- had to drill and pin the bastich. There were some casting issues ont he sicaran that need to be addressed: https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2946/15293941150_1ae9426f9c_z.jpg Cracked treads and a poor mold vent placement left a shoddy looking link once it was clipped. Some plasticard and milliput should clear those up. https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3937/15293768999_a44217c624_z.jpg Cracked engine block corner, will need to be resculpted. Missing/broken off C bend piece. Strategic press-molding of the other one should remedy it hopefully. Got the raw assembly of the caestus chassis done: There have been a number of issues with this kit that I have been dealing with since last update- the most glaring of which was that one of the troop carrier sections had a 1.5 inch V bend in it. Gave my hand a nice hot water burn dealing with that as I sandwiched the ram between a counter lip and my Irwin quick-grip (didn't drain the model of the hot water as well as I thought- it came pouring out of the front hatches onto my hand). Oh well, now both sides are level, so that's something. The left side assembly of the Caestus is off by a few millimeters as you can see on the front hatch assembly. I don't know if that's to be chalked up to miscast or builder naivety-- probably a bit of both. While it isn't too jarring an error on the rest of the assembly, I'm wondering if I should cut the offending section and/or cover it with some manner of filigree panel or other large detail. The rear engine-- you can see it has a pretty nasty spacing gap. I'll cut the engine block by hand and "stretch" it out to fit the space by adding in plasticard spacers and trim I think. That's it for today-- I have no idea when I will get around to updating; these are all time consuming fixes; and real life is rearing its ugly head in once again. Hopefully there will be a significant update the next time I get pictures up; and heaven forbid a finished model or something. Thank you all for continuing to read this blog. The_Chaplain
Looking good, dude! By the way, the answer to warped resin is a hairdryer, man. Preserves your fingers too. Thank you very much Heathens! I was gifted a hairdryer to this end, and it's been working like a dream! Hey guys, long time no post! Sorry about that, real life managed to wedge itself in between the hobby table and me pretty hard (including holding down the fort while my soon to be mother in law has been in the hospital, but she's thankfully on the mend); but I'm back; and although I've only gotten a few hours in between yesterday and today-- I did my damndest to make 'em count! Starting with the subject matter of the last post, the sicaran/caestus: A magnanimous benefactor gifted me a dremel a few weeks back, and I broke it out to tackle the (what I perceived to be) enormous, eye-searing affront gap in the front of the caestus. I also pinned and glued the wings into place. I still need to fiddle with the engine block, but it's only a matter of time before this bad boy is ready for flight (into a padded box for safekeeping until its time for painting). As for the sicaran, I will attempt to get my hands on some thin plasticard and begin fixing the broken tracks and overall touching up work. Chaplain on bike: Added an embellishment detail onto the character conversion set powerfist. Some of the laurel detailing was lost when sanding it flat enough for the application-- but I think I have a solution to address that. Apologies for the crappy picture quality, the phone (once again) decided not to cooperate. Mikhail, this might be of particular interest to you: I addressed the rosarius issue by adding a tilt shield to the left pauldron, and adding tasseled rope from Marneus Calgar's shield detail. Now the rib cage detail isn't hidden, and some additional sense of movement is added with the swinging rope. 2 more bits should *finally* finish out this conversion-- then I can start finishing the command squad. Master of the Forge: He got a head and a bolter-- not the most exciting of updates (pinning a hand onto the gripping arm and reposing it almost drove me up the wall.). Some shoulderpad work and getting a hold of a conversion beamer (hopefully the one on Valthex will fit/be easy to find) and servo harness which will be magnetized will round out this figure. Well, that and slapping him onto a base. Helbrecht to Sternguard: Arms, bolter and tilt shield added. Not a fan of how lurched forward the model is with the leg pose the way it is. He might need a transplant. As an aside-- I received the Tabasco chocalates from my future sister in law-- and they are delicious, I highly recommend them; and I don't even like chocolate all that much. (Plus it's perfect for a wet palette! Win- win!) This post is getting pretty large, so going to post a part 2. Stay tuned. The_Chaplain
Okay, part 2: Devastators: Snagged a few of these heavy bolters off of eBay. The other 2 heavy weapons in the squad will also likely be heavy bolters, but the traditional belt fed model. Pre-heresy landraider: Been wracking my brain on how to make a sufficiently antiquated looking engine block for the landraider that is getting the chapterhouse conversion kit treatment-- and after a discussion with Madscuzzy, I think I'm on the right track (he's a swell guy). I'll be fleshing out the statuary so that it is fully enclosed-- it should be a nice tie in with the vaulted aesthetics of the forgeworld dreadnought and custom dreads in this thread lending a sense of age to the piece. I cut the dark talon armor piece down by about a third to lower the overall profile against the exhausts. I am tempted to add toppers from the empire steam tank to the top of the exhausts to make the block look even older. Sternguard reinforcements: Got the calgar/honour guard box set for my birthday back in october-- and have been happily removing the ultramarine iconography ever since!! Well, that's it for today guys, hopefully I'll be able to get a more substantial update up for you all soon and hopefully with better pictures. C&C welcomed and encouraged! How were your guys' Halloween's this year? I'd love to hear your stories as I unfortunately didn't get to celebrate this year. :( LachlantheLoaf14 and Argent aquila 2 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/253082-chaplains-hobby-misc-red-gobbo/page/14/#findComment-3856483 Share on other sites

The_Chaplain
Okay, things are once again starting to pop up-- so I figured I would take some pictures now; the calm before the storm and all that. Got some work done on the sternguard: Shoulderpad is from one of the legion of the damned models. One of Calgar's crew is undergoing a transformation into a southpaw sternguard marine. Part of an arm from the forgeworld tank crew replaced the one for the dagger, for the beginnings of an overhand grip on the bolter. Need to fill in the obnoxious ULTRA on the pad, and get a crux terminatus on it. Not happy at all with how that knee looks. I think I might wind up replacing the entire greave and/or make it into a bulky bionic. Mr. Lightningclaws has become just another sternguard with a bolter. I think the plastic shoulderpad may be a bit too big though. Thoughts? This knee transplant turned out a lot better than the other one. I can't help but think all of these bolters would look better with chain bayonets on them though. A group shot. Help Needed: Can anyone toss some ideas my way on how best to convert these 2 models into some sternguard? They have some really awkward arm poses-- and the last thing I want to do is model them with bolters aiming outward. That devil may care shooting pose might work in a tactical squad, but it won't fly for veterans who specialize in this sort of thing. In other news, I discovered going through my bits boxes-- that I am critically low on certain parts such as bolter arms! I might have enough for these last few sternguard, but after that I've gotta do some bits orders! And now, for something different! I'd like to do an allied detachment using siege vanguard-- and one of the troop choices in the list are assault marines, who can take combat shields interestingly enough. This is something I cobbled together last night, and personally I think it has potential. The shield is from a company champion in the command squad box with the detail removed and replaced with chained purity seals from a rhino door. That's it for this round of pictures guys! C&C welcomed and appreciated! Until next time! Combat_Vet
Great looking conversions Chaplain. Really inspiring stuff. Have you given a thought to breaking up the monotony of bolter in the squad with maybe stormbolters for the remaining two. Give them grenades/auspex in the off hand. might bring a sense of realism (I know its a game) to the squad being as someone has to chuck "boom balls" and call out targets :) If that is a completely senseless idea please excuse me, as I build and paint as a hobby and know very little about the current rules of the game. The_Chaplain
Great looking conversions Chaplain. Really inspiring stuff. Have you given a thought to breaking up the monotony of bolter in the squad with maybe stormbolters for the remaining two. Give them grenades/auspex in the off hand. might bring a sense of realism (I know its a game) to the squad being as someone has to chuck "boom balls" and call out targets If that is a completely senseless idea please excuse me, as I build and paint as a hobby and know very little about the current rules of the game. The only problem with the storm bolter in something like a sternguard squad is that they cannot use the specialist ammo the rest of the squad can with their bolters. Well, that and the fact that it's still a 2 shot weapon in an era when salvo is a rule. Step it up GW. Still, you've given me something to think about in terms of monotony-- Maybe I should bite the bullet and put a few combi-bolters into the squad, but they seem like an expensive option for what is ultimately a one shot weapon. Another unique weapon of the sternguard is the heavy flamer option-- and I do think I will wind up sticking one into both planned squads-- if for no other reason than to deter armies like tyranids from charging the unit (assuming of course I ever feel like playing the actual game again, haha.) The forgeworld legion heavy flamer is fantastic aesthetically-- I think the castellan crowe model from a few pages is destined for a flamer, and maybe one of the 2 marines I'm stumped on above. Didn't get as much as I'd have liked done the last few nights-- was absolutely wiped out after working. Did get a little done however: Assault sergeant #1 got a lightning claw for that sweet, sweet shredding action. As nicely ornamented as the new Vanguard lightning claws are, whoever designed their poses needs a kick to the shin from a pair of soccer cleats. Nothing that can't be fixed however. Shoulderpad is from the Honour Guard champion's sword arm, with part of the ultramarine symbol removed (and will be filled to be a circular dias). The sawed off upper torso from a Gabriel seth model has begun life anew as a future assault sergeant, again with a lightning claw, and again with some reposing of said claw. Shoulderpad is from the finecast veteran mkII box (pretty sure about that anyway). Another crusader joins the fray-- the torso off of a assault on black reach model I found in disrepair in an old bits box. Now he's got new legs, and a serious case of attitude! Replaced the tear drop on the chainsword with one of the skulls off of the lord executioner's backpack. If I can track down the matching pistol, I will do a similar treatment with the other skull; or just swap the sword-- not 100% keen on it, even with the minor alteration. That's all for now, thanks for looking! I'm off to trawl through eBay for bits and such! Have a good weekend! The_Chaplain
Alrighty faithful followers and spontaneous scrollers, today is a miscellaneous project update-- and some thread music: Dark Talon to Storm Talon: The storm talon assault cannon is tacked on for now, but I think this is honestly the route I'm going to go with it, to convey the 360 degree turret fire it has for any WYSIWYG naysayers out there. That said, the turret has been modified as you will see below. Additional missile launcher bits were ordered, so I finished the second skyhammer custom missile pod. I began gap filling with milliput as well to make it all flush and neat. Removed the absolutely non-sensical landing gears off the side of the assault cannon. Ditto for the elbowed bottom armor. I will have belt feeds, likely from an assault cannon, run to newly converted ammo boxes in the back. These are pretty rough at the moment, but I cut down some ammo boxes from the dark talon box, sanded them down and glued them to the back of the talon AC assembly. The boxes on the back didnt seem to serve any function, and now they do. Crusaders and other assault based infantry: got a box of sanguinary guard when I popped into the local GW to meet the new manager. Figured now would be a good time to grab them before the new BA codex dropped, and the inevitable reboxing and price increase. This crusader is rocking one of the sets of legs. Finished putting the studs on the legs of this guy and gap filling the knee. Ordered some censers (5 isnt enough, I'll undoubtedly need more) and some lanterns to bling out some marines. the seth sergeant got a combat shield to go with his claw. Removed the dark angel iconography from the shield, now it's a blank canvas. I can't help but think that siege vanguard assault squads all kitted out with combat shields painted in personal, or at least crusader heraldry, wouldn't look absolutely kick-ass. Devastators: Next step is to remove the crux terminatus icons from some vanguard pads and put them onto these 2 devs. I saw someone do this conversion with the old metal heavy bolter-- and I fell in love, and knew I had to do this myself. This guy is clearly going to wreck some xenos' day. "Androcles" counts-as: Added a gorget to the armor from the sanguinary guard box, though it needs some tidying up and gap filling. I'm pretty pleased with how it looks though. Also pretty pleased with this: Chaplain and Reclusiam Command squad banner: Covered the gaps on the top of the faring with some ravenwing pole heads. On the left is an MS Paint idea I had for covering the seam gap with feathered body and tail section-- something that would most likely be done with plasticard. Have you ever crusaded so hard you put a mace like censer on your mace? Banner dude got knocked off my table by the "xeno psyker kitten" who went into heat this week and took up residency in crazy town. There hasn't been a moment of quiet in the house for 2 days and nothing is safe from her wanton destruction. Lucky for me, dremel whine and music drowns the yowling out. While I was repinning it, I decided I should kick the banner up another notch; I certainly wasn't going to be using that ultramarines banner! That's all for today folks: if I can get another update up in the next few days, I will-- but if I can't, please have a Happy Thanksgiving and try not to trample on anyone/be trampled by any Black Friday shoppers. If I'm lucky, I might be checking out another Bizarre Bazaar on black friday-- where I will be searching for some brettonian bits and a few other bits and bobs. I doubt I'll find what Im after, but you never know. Until next time! deathspectersgt7 and Argent aquila 2 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/253082-chaplains-hobby-misc-red-gobbo/page/14/#findComment-3868707 Share on other sites
