thanks everyone, now do you think its good enough to get 19 or 20 points in the compatition? so far my max have been 16 pokts, and you prolly seen the other entries.

if im still runnng my final entry will be the warmaster!

I want to see that warmaster painted alright...I think if I were judging a painting contest - which I did when I worked with games workshop aeons ago, I'd be pulling it to the top 3...Khârn is a beautiful rendition of a tired and dated model.

If you're going for a more competitive standards then you need to push the contrast even further.

What I mean by this is the difference between your darkest shadows and your lightest highlights on a colour. Also light direction helps too.

What you want is for the mini to still look well defined at arms length so it stands out when on a shelf or amongst others. So check by holding it at arms length now and then.

Another test you can do is to take a photo and then in a custom filter, drop the saturation to 0. That'll give you a black and white image so you'll be able to tell if you need to darken shadows and brighten highlights.

Now, for example, look at Kharns arms in the photo you posted. There are a few really dark shadows at the bottom of muscles and lighter parts along top parts. So...paint those in. For the shadows you could use a mix of black and turquoise and glaze it into those areas (paint in almost coloured water like layers). The lightest parts would be more an off white.

Do the same process for every part, especially the skulls, weapons, skin, and face/helmet as those are strong focal points on the miniature.

And try not to hate me but you seem to want to really push your painting.

Isn't this a perfect example of why this place exists? To impart such information and advice?

All tips I've picked up from others who I've asked for feedback from.

End of the day fortmeister, it's what we do. We wouldn't be worth a bugger is we didn't offer positive criticism and oppinions on common subject matter

The model far exceeds any of my work, for the moment ;), but the tips provided here will help push it even further.

I am looking forward to seeing if you implement them and have a side by by contrast of the old and new/

thanks forte, great news everyone, unless someone was playing a joke on me i made it thrugh to the final! so starting monday ill be painting up the Warmaster Abbadon!

also got a delivery today, 30 hounds of khorne, from puppetwars, the bargast fiends, so have all i need to do demonkin except a bloodthirster

Oh good I'm so relieved, I thought I gave you terrible advice and it would have cost you a place.

*phew!

I'm never offering advice on painting again, it's too stressful!!!

Glad you made it through but disappointed as I want to see your warhound :D

Also I'm going to give your sceheme a try, hope you don't mind!

Cheers

the only minus points i got on Khârn was the osl, by habbit i started with a too dark tone, so it was getting darker instead of light.

oh and forte none have ever seen a Abbadon like mone, he is uniqe

Ah, that one. Yeah that'll stand out for sure.

Not sure what they mean about your osl. I'll take another look at at your pic again. But I am highly critical of any osl as I personally feel that it's often overdone or used in ways that don't make sense with the way light behaves (as in it travels in straight lines but a lot of osl seems to forget that).

Ok...here's my thoughts on the eye osl.

Colour wise:

You didn't start too dark at all. Personally the dark part is about right. For that amount of spread though the source would be really bright though, as in almost white at the point of origin. I'm guessing the judge is used to airbrushed osl which is usually terrible and unnatural.

Colour placement:

This is the part that gets me every time. Light doesn't bend. It can reflect but it won't bend. You should be able to trace a line to the point of origin. Almost think of it like a circle getting darker as it goes out. Think where light would hit and how sharp the edge is that gets caught by the light.

Time of day:

This is a huge factor for me with the use of osl on minis.

You often see tanks that are painted and look like they're in normal daylight. Then have these full beam headlights and vision slits glowing as if it's night.

I know it's a trend but it makes me want to smash my screen lol.

Hope that wants harsh. I know you've said you want to push yourself and I've found that the more I compare stuff to real things, the happier I am with my own results.

its hard to see on the pic, but its on the arm for excample, the skin is light the osl is darkming the spot instead of brightning it, its fine on black areas but the rest it comes off as anti light

Just seen that. A really thin green glaze with your highlight colour would have got the idea across without darkening.
