'They say of the Astartes that we are war personified. With only my boltgun and my armour, I can destroy empires. They forget that the true weapon of a Space Marine is hate. Hate for my enemies, hate for the traitor and the xeno. My armour can be broken, and my boltgun can have no ammunition. But my hate can never run dry.'

I've finally finished my first combat squad of Crimson Shrikes. I've been using the new Tactical boxes, as well as Mephiston Red spray to speed up the painting process. I've got a 1500 pt list that I'll be working on, and hopefully I should be able to paint the army reasonably fast, as well as maintaining a high standard of painting (for me anyway :P). In the meantime...some more background and pics.

'When we fell onto Kerishian Seven-Alpha, we deployed into the shrine-city of Ikartian. We were surrounded by pilgrims and worshipers, coming in their droves to see His divine wrath incarnate. Angels, they called us. Heralds of the Emperor. They fell to their knees and wept with joy at our coming. We were reminded that these people were why we had come here, to protect humanity.

If only we'd known.

If only I'd known.

If I'd known what would become of the people of that illustrious city, and what they, in turn, would do to Brothers Kaynt and Tormah, I would have killed them all at first sight.'

Very clean painting, all the details are there and done well...but I feel like there needs to be another spot colour, probably on the weapons would be enough. Perhaps a dark grey washed with Nuln Oil maybe?

Cheers,

Jono

I can really enjoy seeing the work people produce when it is clear that they have put a lot of effort and emotion in to the job. Clearly that's what you have done here Brother!

The colour scheme is solid but might be improved with some refining as the others have mentioned. I look forward to seeing more models and definitely more background!

Make the Emperor proud Brother!

Thanks for the encouragement guys! I'm really happy with how the army is progressing and how by taking a couple of extra minutes with each model I can make my marines look that much better, instead of seeing painting as a chore! I've started to paint some Tactical arrows onto the right shoulder pad, as I don't get along with transfers at all. However, I'm struggling with the chapter symbol. Bear with me as I go into a bit more depth...

When I was coming up with background and colours for the chapter, I went with Red and Black for the body and arms as I knew it'd look striking. I also came up with the name Crimson Shrikes as I wanted a predator bird that didn't have too many people using the name. So I was happy. And then my mate sent me a picture...

This is a Crimson - Breasted Shrike. What are the chances? So with that massive coincidence, I'd like some help to come up with a chapter symbol that I can freehand onto my models using the above bird as a guide. It can't be all black as my shoulder pads are black, but red and white would be a good mix. I had thought of using the Blood Ravens symbol, but painting the bird white and making the blood drop into a breast, but my freehanding skills aren't quite that good...

Any ideas are gratefully received!

Pretty good work thus far. As for the symbol- maybe use that blood droplet with some thorns through it? Maybe a droplet in a thorn halo? Or surrounded by barbed wire?

I presume the shrikes' habit of impaling pray was a big part of why You've chosen this particular name?

I really like what you've done with the minis and especially with your approach of the chapter name & inspiration.

Why don't you go with a Raven Guard symbol, but red ? I've myself used that one, it's not difficult to paint over it once it's settled. It will be even easier if you do it in one colour. The FW RG sheet has a lot of them.

I think a red bird on your black shoulder pads would fit quite well your crimson Shrikes :)

Thanks for the help guys. After a bit of looking around, I've found the Raptors transfer sheet on the Forgeworld website, and will be trying those out, painting the beak red at the same time. Hopefully that will give me a distinctive Chapter badge and one that can be applied to both infantry and vehicles.

Being a loyal son of Corax myself, I couldn't help but look in on this.  Love the colors, especially since there is a bird in nature to work from. I don't know about you , but the idea of working thorns into the iconography is a great one. Wrapped(painted) around a leg or an arm. Have you done a good search of images of your feathered friend, you might find some inspiration in there for other detail painting as well. The white on the wing looks interesting, I'm wondering how that looks in flight (I'll likely google it after I'm done here)

Keep up the good work, looking forward to seeing more.

I did this up real quick but the Raptor badge would work well too.

That badge is fantastic! I wish I'd seen that before I ordered the transfer sheets!

I haven't actually decided which geneseed the Shrikes will use fluffwise yet, but Raven Guard are one of my favourite loyalist chapters so they may have to become scions of the Raven :P

The thorn idea hadn't crossed my mind really, but after a bit of thought there may be some background incoming for the First Company and a thorn based ritual...stay tuned!

I've started to put some transfers on, and hopefully this should break up the red and black. The pads need to be matt varnished, but for a first attempt at transfers I'm reasonably happy. It'shard getting those creases out though, and that's using Microsol and Microset!

I think these guys are great! I like the clean look, personally. Maybe I'm in the minority here but I don't think you need to add a lot of kit or purity seals. I think the color is so striking that it really stands well on its own. I have always liked the different colored arms approach, and I think your colors really show it off as a proof of concept. I absolutely love that they match the bird IRL as well. Now if you can make up some custom decals with a chapter badge... I feel your pain about the transfers, though. No matter what, I struggle with getting those wrinkles out.

'Squad Poriat were deployed to provide the devotees of Ikartian with proof that the Emperor protects. After the Ethnarch enacted his terrible work, and corrupted waves of mutated gene-horror swarmed the streets and chapels of that great city, their role in the Shrine War changed. Yes, the Emperor protects. But he is also wrathful.'

All of the above are just words. The Ethnarch was not a creature of words. His sermons were delivered unto the flesh of his foes. Experiments that were a crime not just against the Imperium, but reality itself. Melding warp-magicks and gene-flensing to create that which he believed Mankind should aspire to become. Insanity will make a man have belief that even his greatest crimes were done with the best intentions. We hunted and quarried him though sector after sector, putting that which he forged to sword and the flame. When he fell onto Kerishian Alpha-Seven, our luck had changed. The chances of using a Astartes recruitment world as a lair were fortuitous beyond our wildest dreams. Three months after the Ethnarch made planetfall, the Astartes battle cruiser 'Dagger Luna', containing elements of the Crimson Shrikes' First, Third and Tenth Companies translated in-system...

What happened to the Crimson Shrikes on Kerishian Alpha-Seven was a small price to pay to bring the bastard Ethnarch to the Emperor's justice.'

Images of Demi Squad Poriat, who during the First Battle for Ikartian were led by Sargeant Poriat in guerilla warfare against high value targets and armour destruction. After the destruction of 'Dagger Luna' and the impossibility of resupply, both demi-squads were forced to conserve ammunition, and later resorted to one or two man raids on enemy positions armed with only close combat weaponry and their fury, designed to cripple both remaining Ethnarch command structure and sow terror amongst 'regular' line troops.

Demi-Squad Surrtaya, led by Imoge Surrtaya. As seen above, he carries the marking of the 'Thorn Wreath' on his right shoulder pad, and wields a Phobos pattern bolter, a rare gift in such a young Chapter, and both of these signify that Surrtaya is soon to undertake the ritual that could lead to advancement into the First Company. It is believed that after the end of the war, he undertook the membership trial known as 'The Piercing', but died four days into the ordeal.

Of further interest can be seen both Brother Kaynt on the far right, and Brother Tormah carrying a M36 Class II gravitational weapon. These brothers were the first two Astartes causalities in the Shrine War, and although Brother Kaynt was believed to have perished in an explosion on the fifth day of the battle, Brother Tormah was captured and flayed alive by the Ethnarch's forces. After the end of the War, his body was recovered, but missing both of his progenoids...

I was going to work on painting my Sternguard next. However, after painting a full Tactical squad, I didn't want to run the risk of burnout painting infantry. My 1750 list has a lot of vehicles in it, which presents a problem for me. I really, really dislike painting vehicles! I'm not sure why, but it's something I tend to try and avoid. So, time to tackle my fear head on, and where better to start than Tangent Diagonal, my Stormtalon? I wasn't sold on the model when it first came out, but it grew on me, and when I finally bought my own I fell in love! It's gorgeous, and instead of thinking of it as a plane, I feel it has more of an Apache/Cobra look. I can just imagine one of these hovering outside an enemy held building and just shredding it with assault cannon and missile fire.

I've done the red and black on the model, and just need to start laying down the metals now, which shouldn't take long. Speaking of which, I need to find a tutorial for making engine burns if anyone knows a good one?
