Honda
Excellent batrep. I think your style of writing is more conducive to narrative reports. Your narratives just have more color and energy. Marshal Mattias
Chaplain Mortshtekk of the Renascibilitas Crusade. http://i1287.photobucket.com/albums/a628/matzeke/84D8A34A-3CE8-4EC6-BFCE-6DAD4A480E59_zps2won4fu1.jpg Background Chaplain Mortshtekk is a legend among his brothers, and for good reason. As a lowly initiate, he demonstrated exceptional ZEAL, and was under early scrutiny from the Reclusiam for a time. However, his particular skill-set saw him step away from the tradional route to Chaplaincy. His recruitment had been from a feudal world of roaming tribes, locked in regular conflict over vast herds of beasts used for hides, food, transport and warfare, where each generation was born in the saddle. Unsuprisingly, Mortshtekk's proficiency in mounted combat was noted, and he quickly found his way into a squad normally deploying on bikes. As part of an armoured column, his squad flanked the heavier vehicles and enaged enemy skirmishers and scouts, eliminating them with ruthless efficiency using an array of specialist weaponry. It was after a surprise assault, which saw Mortshtekk and his squad rushing to the aid of a beleagured unit of Vindicator tanks, that his future developed. The Templar bikers crested a rise to find themselves nearly on top of a vast mob of orks preparing a barrage of crude rocket weaponry. With no time to pull back to engage such numbers with their superior firepower, Mortshtekk hefted the squad banner as a makeshift lance and urged a charge. The Templars with him followed suit without a thought, his actions an inspiration to all Black Templars. Drawing chainswords, the unit hurtled into the fray. The crushing impact of the Astartes, and the speed with which they fell upon the orks, broke the foe almost immediately. Mortshtekks brethren could barely keep up with him as he whirled among the enemy, chainsword in one hand and spear in the other, felling Xenos in every direction. When word of the event reached his superiors, he was asked to begin training his unit to specialise in such shock tactics. As a charismatic warrior, he already had the respect of his brothers and they were awed by his skills and fearlessness. The Heavy Lancers were born, and they have ridden together since. Upon deployment during the third war for Armageddon, he operated in the Ash Wastes crusade under the leadership of Marshal Ricard. His unit proved invaluable in the wide open spaces that dominated the landscape. Their repeated heroism and incredible martial prowess saw the whole unit honoured with elevation into the Marshal's household as Sword Brethren. As their reputation grew, he drew the gaze of the Reclusiam once more, and they began to hone his natural talents through careful training, shaping his natural vigour and powerful presence into a beacon for his brethren's faith. Since donning the skull-helm of a Chaplain, Mortshtekk has truly found his rightful place in the Emperor's plan. The roaring of engines, the fluttering of banners, the fear in the eyes of his foes; these things are what he lives for, until he dies for his Emperor. +++ That time may have come, as he surveys the sickeningly cowardly mortals before him. They try not to meet his gaze, fearsome as it is. They are broken in body and spirit, but not for long. "Come, children of the Emperor! His city is beseiged, your city, and you have not the faith to fight? Even now, my brothers assail the foe from the rear. Your time is now, and the Emperor is your shield! You cannot see it, but I know it surrounds me. I go now to meet the enemy, and crush him utterly. Will you join me?" Without waiting for an answer, he chuckled and swung his leg over the monstrous engine. Thumbing the power to his crozius, he surged forwards through the shattered gates and into the dark. Moments later, the silence behind him was broken by the fury of the crowd, the air filling with las-beams and curses slung at the ork filth. His chuckle became a bellowing laughter, as he lead the remnants of the guard in a charge that would see his foes defeated, and his legend among the enemies of mankind begin. +++ Since departing Armaggedon with the Renascibilitas Crusade, he has faced many enemies. The orks already fear the skull-faced one, who arrives laughing and brings so much destruction. The dark eldar raiders whispered of an enemy who could match the best of their gladiators at full-speed, and swat a wych rider from his jetbike like it was nothing. The hated Tau xenos tell tales of a single rider, who veers off from his unit to charge through storms of gunfire and slaughter entire squads of fire-warriors at a time, laughing as he goes. His brethren tell stories that his laughter is a weapon, designed to break the will of the foe and cause fear in their ranks. The truth is, Mortshtekk is having so much fun he cannot help it. Marshal Mattias
So I'm going to show you a concept-mock-up-thing of something I've been contemplating for some time. I have always loved the idea of the landraider as a rolling fortress, and wanted to take this a step further and blend in some fortress-monastery/chapter-keep themes. My idea is for a reclusiam-on-wheels, a rolling chapel of ZEAL that can act as a centrepiece to my army. Here's the super-rough idea held together with blu-tack: http://i1287.photobucket.com/albums/a628/matzeke/9D672EC7-C5AF-4827-9338-1FF979DAC425_zpshnphqgjs.jpg http://i1287.photobucket.com/albums/a628/matzeke/789951DB-66AD-4515-B0D9-1178A992B4C5_zpstksu7wya.jpg http://i1287.photobucket.com/albums/a628/matzeke/CAA03A16-E6C7-463C-B5C8-81AB51AB1B71_zpsdamuwfey.jpg http://i1287.photobucket.com/albums/a628/matzeke/9342EAD2-FE53-4D23-859D-C86B1BB34368_zpspj29logz.jpg Now, I'll really be going to town on this, so the upper-level will be magnetised to the main body, with the intention that it can be removed in one piece (like in the bottom picture). The landraider can then be run without the tower if desired, making some gameplay/transport simpler, and the tower can be used as a piece of scenery/objective as a Templar shrine. As you can see, there is space on top for a single model, both for Rule of Cool and to indicate the contents of the transport. This will most probably be either Grimaldus or my upcoming 'Master of Sanctity' in terminator armour, both of whom will get small magnets beneath their base to secure them to the platform during gameplay. So, what do you think? Too much? Am I crazy? Do you think it works in an old-school grimdark Black Templar kind of way? Ciler
To be honest, the tower bit strikes me as too tall and the whole thing looks incongruous. I would only the last tier of the tower and forego the section with the door/window, to achieve an effect more similar to Yarrick's baneblade : http://reho.st/http://orig08.deviantart.net/5b3a/f/2010/110/b/a/fortress_of_arrogance_by_golgothistitanicus.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/284514-the-renascibilitas-crusade-redemptor-wip/page/19/#findComment-4244801 Share on other sites
Marshal Mattias
I fiddled about with a shorter 'fighting deck' type of deal, but it just lacked something. Kind of a "why bother?" effect. I think the key to resolving the height (which I kind of want) is to make it less binary, and build up to it more. I'll continue my experimentations ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/284514-the-renascibilitas-crusade-redemptor-wip/page/19/#findComment-4244910 Share on other sites
Honda
I think the visual aspect you will need to work out is the height to width ratio. I don't know what it ought to be right at this moment, but it does seem like the width of the LR should be increased if the height of the tower is to remain the same. So, if it were me, because I think that the height of the tower is an important element, then you might consider looking into how to make the LR wider. Marshal Mattias
Basically, I don't want to mess too much with the true size of the hull, but intend to use the 'arch' type pieces to visually imply it is larger. It will suggest the footprint is as wide as the hurricane bolters, while not changing too much in the way of gameplay. I think the point is that it will look unrealistically proportioned to some extent - I'm certainly not going for a true military-effectiveness approach to the design ;) it should be fairly bombastic and outrageous :P I am looking at ways to potentially drop the height a little though, either by trimming out the base of the tower, or possibly 'sinking' it through the top of the hull, depending on which approach is easier! Psykic_scribe
Love the side panels ! Echoes of Marneus Calgar's chariot but with a Templar spin. I recall a White Dwarf picture of a Chaos Landraider with a Khornate tower a long time ago - I wasn't that impressed then as it didn't look "dominant" enough to carry any extra heavy weapons. Maybe the better approach is to add a "command" style fixed turret to the LRC, with suitable Templar architecture? Marshal Mattias
Did some more fiddling - this is a less ostentatious concept - it doesn't have the same crusader-y siege/church tower kind of vibe but still adds some flavour. I'm guessing this is more the kind of thing folks were suggesting? http://i1287.photobucket.com/albums/a628/matzeke/383BC77B-379E-4C0F-A0DD-5559833EC28B_zpslxiq9how.jpg Eberious, Psykic_scribe and Metic 3 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/284514-the-renascibilitas-crusade-redemptor-wip/page/19/#findComment-4248611 Share on other sites
