What 2014 will bring

This is actually an interesting problem in all game design. There is a difference between symmetry and balance.

Bringing our beloved Angels into it, if you have to armies that are exactly the same then you have both symmetry and balance because they are exactly symmetrical and perfectly balanced due to that exact symmetry. Then you can have asymmetrical balance where you could take a shooting army and an assault army that were balanced against each other. Both armies play differently, but based on the mechanics of the game are balanced. These games provide a more interesting game due to their asymmetric nature.

The sixth edition rule set has caused an issue with asymmetric match ups by weakening the role of assault, and increasing the strength of shooting. This was made worse due to releases that have further increased the relevance of shooting. Games workshop, based on the most recent release of the Tyranids book, seems unlikely to back pedal these changes.

My worst fear for the future of the Blood Angel codex is that they will substantially change the army to try to make it more viable in the new edition. I like the way the Blood Angels play, their focus on maneuvering and movement to put pressure on specific parts of the enemy force. They are ferocious and methodical. I would rather they leave that sort of emphasis even if it means that they won't be as competitive. I would rather wait for the core book to come back into balance than have our book try to become balanced in the current rule set.

dont think so, my guess is it will contain FAQs but the book itself wont be a requirement to play games if you also own stronghold. Else it would actually be a new edition. If that ends up being the case, getting the LE rulebook will indeed feel like a terrible waste lol.

I'd be fine with dropping S&T by 1 point each then giving him back Independant Character and giving him a 5+ Invulnerable.

In fact... what are current Vampire Lord stats like in Warhammer? He used to have stats the same as a vampire lord when he was first created...

I bet they'll nerf his stats, I would hate to see it though

I wouldn't expect a Mephiston nerf as he is already overpriced for his current rules, and that isn't just based on my opinion of the character.  In comparison with other characters in the game with similar roles he is both more expensive and less impressive.  I'm pretty confident we will either see a slight buff or just a cost reduction.

A keeper of secrets actually.

Wolf? Are you sure? Im 99% sure he had vampire lird stats in 2nd edition (angels of death) this was also long before the hints at daemonhood (although if you read the two first person mephiston stories he doesnt know what he is, but knows hes loyal to the imperium and the blood angels... I personally bet on sanguinius somehow reborn through gene memory )

Yeah the codex states that his geneseed "reawakened" and brought on even further changes, so I'd say he's as close to Sanguinius as an Astartes can be in a physical sense.  I think both Dante and Mephiston are in need of reworks, and not just simple stat tweaks.  I'd like to see the rules rewritten as if they were new characters.

Dante

Veteran of a thousand wars - Dante's has honed his battlecraft over two millenia. He gainswill not die on a 4+ and ignores unwieldy.

Tactical Supremacy : Descent of Angels Choose first or second turn. Dante and a units arriving from reserves via descent of angels automatically arrive that turn. Dante and his unit do not scatter.

Dante may take a single unit if Sanguinary guard as an honour guard, making them count as troops and gain 1 WS.

You are correct, he had the same stats as a vampire lord in the old 'undead' armybook before the split to VC and TK.

I also think that's it's only recently (5th ed codex, thanks matt ward!) that there ever was any doubt about his powers. Until then his stats was always about the true potential of the geneseed. Perhaps what every marine would have been if the Emperor had time to perfect the process before his 'death'.
