Today, the Death Company killed...

A few days ago my DC assaulted a wave-serpent and took it down, then on the following turn they were assaulted by poor dire avengers (who were torn to shreds) then they ate a lone jetbike before sitting on an objective for a turn. Not their most impressive showing but still good.

Today a 5 man squad with 1 power fist was blasted by tau down to 2 members. They charge a riptide and tie it down. Finally the tide kills the last regular death company. Every turn my power fist guy keeps hacking away till boom! Down goes Fraiser and he gets a riptide kill. Next he charges a hammerhead and wounds it and he is all alone. The game ended before he could do anymore damage! So 1 riptide and 1 wound on a tank.

Yesterday (before the snowpocalypse), the Death Company killed a mob of termagaunts, while a death company squad led by Gabriel Seth killed (annihilated would not be too strong a word) a Tyranid command squad (three Zorathropes and the warlord). Then, with Seth running for an objective, the DC squad killed a winged Hive Tyrant.

Fun game.

I run a DC spam list, often, that seems to work really well. It just soaks dice up, spreads a lot of feel no pain and furious charge across the table. I lost Raephan's death company to a giant flame template and Cassor was shot in the rear by massed winged hive tyrants in this game, both before killing anything. In the same turn. Very demoralizing and I am still very surprised I ended up winning the game. Sanguinary guard killed more than my death company squads, actually. 2 squads of guants and a squad of warriors. But the DC did their job and soaked up the wounds and killed the things too.

I think small DC squads seem to work better than large ones, as long as you run two or three of them. Just my experience, anyway.

In my last battle I fielded 27 Death Company. I had:

  • 8 with a Chaplain and Inquisitor in a Rhino
  • 5 with jump packs and a Chaplain
  • 5 with a Captain in a Razorback
  • 9 with jump packs and Dante, a Librarian, Sanguinary Priest, Astorath and Lemartes

Combined total damage? 2 hull points of a AV 12 Dreadnought...

What do I win?

Last game my 5 man squad (with power weapons and a fist led by a chaplain) jumped on a 3 man Thunder Wolf pack with attached Iron Priest and Wolf Lord plus a couple of cyber wolves. After I finished rolling the Wolf lord was the only model left and on 2 wounds. After another round the fist guy took the Wolf Lord down to a single wound before the Wolf klled them all off (Thunder hammer). The Wolf lord was much more cautious after that.

8 DC with two fists and a lib

Stern guard dropped and popped their crusader

DC counter charged them, a, disagreement over wether or not bolter tactics allowed a reroll of combi plasma shots, I gave up arguing against in the end, left half dead.

All but his lib died, I popped his lib with a raven just to be a git

My best performance came in 6th edition. Playing a big game against ultramarines in which the first few turns hammered me with thunderfires galore.

My 10 man DC with a reclusiarch charged out into 7 hammernaters. With re-rolls I caused 37 wounds! He rolled exactly 7 1's wiping the unit. They survived to again charge his other unit of hammernators, this time 7 of them with a terminator librarian (he likes hammernators) and they AGAIN caused so many wounds that they wiped them too.

DC won me the battle that day, they literally saved me from defeat as the rest of my army had been so badly pummeled that they got Slay the warlord and linebreaker.

The full battle report is here for anyone who wants to take a gander

  • 2 weeks later...

Yesterday, my Death Company Killed:

DC Dreadnought (who gets a name now) annihilated the Deceiver and then ran up to a Monolith and tore it apart before getting his ass shot off by Necron flyers.

DC Squad escorting Mephiston soaked up some wounds but grabbed an objective and line-breaker (they didn't kill anything, though)

DC squad with jump packs butchered two squads of Destroyers.

Also, my Sanguinary Guard squad Killed the Night Bringer, a squad of destroyers, two squads of warriors.

Not a bad day for the sons of Sanguinius.

Don't have my marine 'dex to hand but I'm fairly certain bolter drill only affects bolters (duh), including only the bolter part of combi weapons.

Indeed. Dominic, next time, as the guy to see the rule in his codex. The marine codex specifically states i only works on bolters, and even then, never on special ammunition. Sternguard never get the benefit of bolter drill unless using bolt pistols or storm bolters.

This is the stuff of Legends, guys! I'm liking the C-Tan kills, and the DC saving the day kills, very good.

I'm feeling I need to make up some more and spam them to win glory for Sanguinius and the Emperor.

yeah, bolter drill only affects bolt pistols, boltguns, storm bolters and heavy bolters.   As for sternguard, it only effects normal boltgun shots, all combi weapons secondary one shot weapon is just that a one shot weapon and isn't a bolt weapon.   Also special ammo is considered an entirely seperate type of bolter, so is not effected by bolter drill.     That being said, even pedro kantors storm bolter is in question on bolter dril because its a storm bolter but its not a regular one.

As for the Death company, you guys are inspiring.   I can't wait to see if my DC can do something. Only got one game so far under the new dex, and sadly..my DC did nothing by die in one round of shooting from a Knight's double shot battle cannon.    Had my 9 DC with librarian and only thing to live was the librarian and just barely.  Was frustrating at best as it was still turn one, so I felt like that game was a waste of my time more than any real test.   Down side of 3 way battles, and also letting a guy field a knight in 1000 points list.

One game I lost a storm raven carrying Astorath, A DC dread, and 5 death company in jump packs. They mirraculously survived, but were then assaulted by terminators. The assault was mutually destructive. Never seen it before. Then the DC dread, on my turn, charged arjac rockfist. Arjac slaughtered my dread which failed to inflict enough wounds to kill him, and then Arjac was killed by the explosion.

This game can be hilarious.
