Thanks for all the replies everyone! For the people asking about the metal base/rod I honestly haven't given it any serious thought as I'm more focused on completing the Stormbird. The Flight stand is 'probably' just going to get the sand and crush ruble appearance of the rest of my army, I've been attempting an understated basing theme for this army to let the metallic steal the focus. The rod of the flight stand will probably be painted black but again, I haven't given it much thought. Thanks for the input there though!

I would like some more help with the upcoming rubric marines.

I'll be using these as the basis for two 10x man Veteran squads. But I have a few choice that I would appreciate input on.

I know that I will be giving all of them but the sergeant the Achaen Upgrade heads from FW. My question revolves around the bolters and Backpacks. Should I keep the Thousand Sons bolters that the Rubrics have, or swap them for Tigrus Bolters from Betrayal at Calth?

As for the backpack, throughout my army I have sprinkled in the occasional "Anvillus pattern" chaosy backpack, to add visual interest and break up the uniformity of my massed tacticals.

Should I keep the Rubric backpacks?

Swap them all for Mk IV packs?

or

Should I have a balance of both. If so, what ratio do you think would be best?

Thanks, and I appreciate your thoughts on this!

Swap them for a variety of non-bird skull, skeleton hands-holding vents power cells. Any other Mk. (even Mk. VII) would work well. The Rubricae would not look good on Loyalist Thousand Sons, which let's be honest... they were loyal pretty much up to the Siege of Terra.

I would say standard/Anvilus aside from the sergeant and maybe a single other vet, the bolters look alright as they would work for more ornate bolters that vets would have.

Your army is simply beautiful, what amazing painting and kitbashes. Hats off too you!

The Dreads, the Leviathan in particular take the ribbon from me, so full of character with those minor adjustments. I hope they release Magnus (before he went all daemon) to see what you do with him.

Mix of bolters would look fine (not sold on the flamers, but if there's enough of them one could perhaps run a full Support Squad....). As much as I like the FW upgrades for the helmets, these are fantastic; as long as they aren't too Chaos-y, they'd be great for line officers, veterans, etc. Maybe a mix to tie them in with the rest of the army?

And I hope you'll keep the autocannon, either as a counts-as heavy bolter, or just to collect until you have enough for a Heavy Support Squad.

Power plants are a bit too on the Chaos side for my liking. A mixture of any of the standard variants would probably be for the best.

Personally I'd swap out the weapons and the power packs. I'm all for a few Anvillus power packs, but I feel that the detail on the new TS packs are a bit too Chaotic. The same goes for the bolters.

I think there will still be more than enough characterful detail on the minis to mark them out as veterans :tu:

Having said all of that, if they're post-Planet of the Sorcerers Thousand Sons then you can go all out with the plastic kit as it is (although they might look a bit strange next to your other legionnaires).

As above, swap out the weapons and the backpacks. Maybe one or two of the fancy-shmancy bolters here and there, but honestly, they just look a bit too cartoony to me. The backpacks I could imagine one or two of the claw ones looking okay on uber-ornate models, but the dragon's head ones are just... eh. Too 40k Chaos for my blood, personally.

As your GS work is superb I'm sure you can blend a few of the more chaotic details in, given that the cult symbols have the tzeentch symbol in them anyway, so making some of the funkier details more subtle could be a way to negotiate your concerns

I think all of the rubric backpacks are a bit too chaotic. If it were bird heads rather than bird skulls, maybe, but they look too warped even for veterans. Suitable for an unusually morbid librarian perhaps.

On bolters, probably not the bird-headed ones but the ones on the box cover look fine. Ornate artificer-wrought versions of the old 2nd ed. plastic bolter, well within the limits of a 30k legion. Not sure if those are the ones that were updated to become the FW's Tigrus pattern or the sickle-case Umbra pattern. Mix those in with your BaC Tigrus and it'll look great.

On the heads, I know you're set on the Achaeans but perhaps a generic MkIV helm or two would help 'tone down' some of the more baroque elements of the rubric bodies?

If you are going to use them as vets I think the back packs and flamers may be a little too chaos but the bolters are fine.

Can I suggest rather than using them as vets consider spreading one box through your army to represent artificer armored sergents and as the basis for what will hopefully be tons of psychers.

Whichever you decide I feel confident they will be stunning.

I would definitely swap out all of the bolters and packs for those from BaC, that's what I'm going to do with them when I get round to doing my TS. I think the heads are probably usable with a bit of toning down though, I worry that the achaean upgrades might clash with the style of these models.

I'll use them for my Destroyers. The hats seem to be "Kaltaran Crests and were a funerary right of ancient Prosperine kings", hence they got used by Rubrics and Dreadnoughts. Destroyers are literally "walking deads" since they get cancer, so I think it's fitting to give them the heads as "proto versions" of things to come :)

I like that train of thought.

Complete Breacher Squad

+++++++++++++++++

I managed to finish this Squad up in time to start working on the Scarab occult and Rubricae/Veterans tomorrow.

I'm very pleased with how they have come together. I do love the new Prospero Plastic MK III, but I'm still more of a fan of MK IV armor for the XV Legion.

I've also settled on a completed basing scheme for my force, themed around the Battle of Prospero.

For the basing, I've used slate painted to represent crushed marble, and Fluorite crystals to mimic shattered glass from the obliterated Pyramids of Tizca.

It's not a drastic departure of what I had before, just a few minor details to ad depth, and interest to the bases without distracting from the models themselves.

As always, I'd love to hear your thought on the Breachers and the finished basing!
