Pyroclast91's Forge = Salamanders Primaris and Death Guard

Recommended Posts

That's a very good question Bjorn I'll probably do them in a in a very dark bronze whenever I get around to getting my poor neglected knight finished that is. He sorta got sidelined for my Ash Vipers So once I get them finished I'll get back on that project.

Needle nose tweezers are actually pretty good for sculpting flames. I made a legion of the damned sergeant wreathed in flames and basically what I did was just put small blobs of GS on the model and essentially pull the GS upwards and then use a sculpting tool to make the pulled sections seem more flame like. And speaking of drake helms I'm actually updating an old salamanders captain of mine that happens to have a drake helm as well  . Also for Lucky if you plan on running him as a consul I would suggest using your awesome plasticard skills and rigging him up a servo arm on his backpack. Looking forward to seeing more!

Thanks brother Vairocanum your kind words are always appreciated as are your insights I'll give that a try with the flames on Ahriman. I think I'll probably do it to cover up some of the details on his armour however as the more I consider it I think I can do a much better drake helm than I did before so I think I'll probably try that. And as for the servo arm for the consul I may do just that I just need to hit up my local model train store first as I'm running low on certain styrene stock that makes making bionics and things much easier.

I have sorta switched gears again which any of you who have followed this thread know is kinda to be suspected and it's actually kinda odd how long I stayed in build mode. Have no fear I'll get back to the breachers and I actually have some ideas for how I can make a couple other specialist units using just the plastic kits and my modest modeling skills but we'll get to that later.

Much like everyone else with any interest in the wolves I'm kinda waiting for inferno to see what kinda fun toys they can have before I build any wolves but this model has just been screaming at me to paint it. Aside from the head which was not an issue to change. I think HE hit it out of the park with this model. The pose is great the detail is fantastic and I think they've done a really good job of keeping him wolfy but making him distinguishable from a 40k wolf.

I forgot to take pics this morning but most of the trim that you see silver in the pics is actually been painted with warplock bronze like the skull in the middle of his chest. I've started to use Warplock a lot its become one of my favorite metallic paints for any non silver metal. Using it like a base for metals really helps give depth and tone variation IMO. Now I just need to pick up some of the new gold paints that everyone seems to be raving about. I've still got a way to go on the wolf but he'll be finished this week for sure as I'm using him as an entry in a competition my local gw is hosting. The premise is pretty cool actually. The competition runs all year and every month each participant is required to paint the the same number of models as the current month so he's my 1 model for the first month. Anywho I'll get some better pics up tonight or tomorrow thanks for checking out my work I'd love to hear your thoughts your C&C is always greatly appreciated.

Been super duper busy mainly painting actually I had a mad rush to get my wolf finished in time for that painting competition I mentioned and consequently probably could've done a few things better.

Overall though especially being my first wolf I'm pretty happy with him and I learned some things for more wolves to come in the future ;).

Besides all that fun I also got busy and literally spent most of the day off and on between binge watching Vikings and working on this chap.

20170129_230436.jpg

He still needs a lot of work but I think I'm off to a promising start considering this is my first go at painting white armour. And if you were wondering I decided to give him red robes because it seemed fitting to have fabric in a color that blood wouldn't stain ;) I also started working on the big man himself here's a little pic of the work so far.

I like the wolf. Definitely looks the business and I am digging the helm instead of the super sayain hairdo.

I have skorr's helmet and was thinking about using it or trying to make the mask like the champ wore in A Thousand Sons when he met the red king.

The Medicare also looks great and not bad at all for the first time with white armor.

@ Bjorn Firewalker thanks brother always nice to hear.

@ Our_Baz Your input as always is greatly appreciated brother. I've been considering doing just that I just want to avoid it coming out tan or bone colored as I don't want him too look like a DG. And Vulkan will be appearing off and on from now till he's finished I'm slowly working on him a piece at a time while doing other projects so I don't rush through him.

@Hushrong Thanks brother glad you like it the head was really my only issue with the geigor model . The Skorr head would definitely be another way better option than that giant mess of hair the model comes with.

Thanks for the feedback fellas it's always appreciated I'll have more done tonight or in the morning.

Great work Pyroclast! Sorry I missed this, had a couple of busy days. First, Bjorn loos great, the wolf head looks definitely better than the ridicule triangle hair... And the primus medicae is also very good, you've nailed the white while still keeping a Salamander aspect. Also, good luck with Vulcan, painting a primarch is always a great deal of fun ;)!

I concur. Some hair styles they have are out of control and geigor hangs with the best of them.

Also looking forward to vulkan . I looked back and realized I missed his cape.

Greetings my plastic/resin crack addicted brothers and sisters! Last month was very much not a productive one, i ended up spending a great deal of time bouncing back and forth from one project to the next.I have however made some progress on both my Primus Medicae and Vulkan.

20170205_231846.jpg

Still a little way to go on this fella but I could really use some input something's just striking me as off about the scheme I chose? Any thoughts or am I just being over critical?

20170205_231858.jpg

And then there's Vulkan.

As you can see my main focus has been on getting his armour just the rite green (imo). Next will be finishing up the sections of scales on Vulkan's hip armour, his forearm, holster and the little ribbon of scales on the front. Thanks for checking out my work your C&C is always greatly appreciated hopefully I can get myself back into my routine of daily updates soon.

Great job brother! The thing that's striking you as off on the apothecary is probably the colour of the shoulder pads mixed with the tabard, they're both very attention catching colours which draw the eye from the white, which should be the main colour. That said it looks fine to me, I actually like a lot how he's looking.

Also the armour on Vulkan is amazing, the contrast between that deep green and the lighter tone looks great, though I must say that I'm surprised that you abandoned your more olive shade of green on this two last models as well as somehow disappointed, it was rather a unique colour which made your force stand out more (and probably looked better with the white tribal markings). At last I'm not sure to what point does the cape cover Vulkan's legs, as you might have over-lighted if it covers them too much. I noticed this because exactly the same thing happened to me when I painted Horus ;)!

@ Vairocanum thanks brother I'm growing quite fond of them myself now that I've started doing then it's almost like a personal challenge to see where I can make them fit ;).

@ The Traitor thanks man I think you're rite about the primus medicae. And my reasoning for doing his robes red was because in my mind that's the only color of fabric someone who would regularly be covered in blood would wear. That being said I think it dies draw the eye in too many directions so some day when I'm low on projects and feel like revisiting him he may get green robes. As for my green color fear not my brother the Ash Vipers scheme will still be in use but fluff wise the PM has only very recently been transferred and hasn't yet repainted his shoulder pads but he very well may once he gets new robes ;) And Vulkan was going to be painted wearing the armour he'd wear when fighting along side them however after quite a good deal debating it with myself I went for a more traditional scheme as I'm actually hoping to sell this Vulkan once he's finished to hopefully fund an army expansion which will of course include his replacement who will be in AV green.

So it would seem the powers of chaos have had it out for me this month and RL hasn't really left me with a ton of time to sit down and paint. However I have managed to do some building here and there in the free time I have had. Let's start with some of the Iron Tenth.

20170215_062025.jpg

Shadrak Meduson. Every Salamanders/Iron Hands player has to have one rite? Also in case you were wondering that's not his final pose the blue tac and his bionic leg (that isn't finished) are throwing it off.

20170214_221222.jpg

Tyròs Arkhan. Part of my first iron Hands Vet Squad his bionic arm still needs a bit of work but he's not far from finished.

20170214_221742.jpg

Not yet named Iron Hands tactical veteran. One of the only members of the squad without visible bionics.

I also had a minute to experiment with a new product I think I'll probably be using regularly now. I'd never even heard of rub n buff before reading the FW Iron Hands recipe but I saw they had it in gold at my local craft store so decided to give it a shot.

20170214_222038.jpg

20170214_222052.jpg

I'm quite happy with the results especially considering the Custode in the picture was primed white and I was mainly just messing around.

20170214_222104.jpg

I just did a lite pass on the shield to try to illustrate how well this stuff covers and how well it goes on two things I was very impressed with. The rest of the squad have been reprimed black however as the only issue I had with the rub n buff was that it's very dry so your basically dry brushing it on meaning it's hard to get in to small recesses. This of course can be remedied with a good wash but I still think a black primer will be better. Overall I think this stuff is awesome and I'll definitely be ordering the variety pack which has pewter, steel, silver, several bronzes, coppers, and golds, and I would absolutely recommend this stuff to anyone who paints.

And let's not forget the big man

I've mainly been slowly working on the metals when I have time hopefully this weekend I'll have a chance to sit down sms do some serious painting though. Thanks for checking out my work your C&C is always greatly appreciated.

The Iron Hands are coming along great! The blood angel head looks pretty decent on Shadrak but there's a head in the Deathwatch kits thats really similar to the artwork for him that might be worth considering. Vulkan is looking really nice, I'm liking the metals. Hope you'll get your hobby time during the weekend!

@ Vairocanum thanks brother since I consider you one of the sites best/most creative kitbashers I'm glad to hear you dig em ;) And I've actually been wanting to grab a box of those DeathWatch marines since they came out purely for those wonderful bits so now it looks like I've got one more reason/excuse to do just that is it in the vet squad box? or in the Overkill set? im planning to get the vets but if it's in the Overkill box I'll either have to go through a bits site or wait a while.

@ The Traitor I'm glad you like em brother I've got some big plans for them sculpting wise I'm just hesitant to start because I finally broke down and ordered some of the much discussed silicone clay shapers that I've heard everyone who seems to be awesome with GS uses. Unfortunately they're coming from somewheres In China that I can neither remember our pronounce but Amazon said they'll be here between the 26 of this month and the 3rd of March. That said my options are A. wait for the delivery from China with my magical silicone tools and in the meantime assemble the rest of my troops which will also require sculpting meaning I'll have a ton of things to practice and experiment I once they arrive. or B. start sculpting knowing if the tools do turn out to be as magical as everyone says they are I can always rip the old work off and start anew. Still not sure really what to do on this one may end up being a little both ;) And like I mentioned about that Rub n Buff if you can find some locally or online I would definitely recommend giving it a shot they actually have a black that I think would be awesome for your HOS And it's probably the coolest metallic medium I've ever worked with I strongly recommend it I'll get some more pics when I do the other 4 custodes and I plan to use it for all my iron hands going forward I feel like I'm raving about the stuff at this point but I'm truly just that impressed with it i feel as though people need to know about this stuff :D

  • 3 weeks later...

Well unfortunately due to some RL issues my hobby time has been drastically cut back and my hobby budget is no longer a thing so I had to bow out of the tale of 20 hobbyists. Something I'm a quite disappointed to have to do but I no longer have the resources or time to commit to the project so for a little while until I can get RL figured out I'll probably be mainly focusing on conversions since I can do brief sessions of sculpting and scratch building on the stuff I already have and seeing as how I won't be rushing to hit deadlines for a while I'll be able to take my time with them. I also just received the silicone clay shapers I ordered over a month ago and I wish I would have ordered them years ago seriously anyone who is still considering getting some they are worth every penny and if your broke like myself you can pick them up dirt cheap on Amazon as long as you don't mind waiting for them to ship from China. I managed to find a set of 15 of them in varying densities for $17.00. So here's some of what's been happening in my garage.

20170302_232729.jpg

I also learned how to take super close up pics meaning I can see all the mistakes in my work super well ;)

20170302_232833.jpg

Still not sure if that's the head I'll go with on this model but it's definitely a front runner as I don't think I wanna use the original on him as it's too recognizable as Ahriman.

I also did some battle damage on the tartaros termis as I want them too have that been through hell and back look to them.

I've also dusted the cobwebs off my poor neglected knight and I'm gonna start working on him again so expect to see some of that project off and on. And hopefully I'll get my RL shenanigans sorted out in the next month or so and be back to business as usual. Thanks for checking out my work any C&C is always greatly appreciated.

Sorry to hear that brother, real life is great one day and totally screws up with you the next one, it might be a cosmological stick and carrot system conspiracy... On the other hand that Ahriman head looks fantastic, I think it suits him very well and makes him look like a real slamamander, but it would be great to see the staff, which is his other iconic symbol and see how you've changed that (if you have changed it at all, it is a quite cool bit to simply remove, I wasn't in fact capable of taking it away and had to reshape it... :P)

But I must admit that what has won me over in this update is the mkIV helm conversion, amazing idea! The oversized eye lense with the complex cabling behind is awesome, completely worth of the Iron Hands!

Its a real shame you had to give up on the tale of 20 hobbyists. I hope real life problems clear up quickly for you! Lovely sculpting for both the Ahriman conversion and iron hands helm. Also hooray for battle damage, I like physical damage so much more than just painting scratches on the model. I forgot but were the tartaros for your salamanders or iron hands? Looking forward to seeing more conversions and the knight!

Yeah that sorcerer/librarian hits the spot. Sucks to hear real life has to slow you down but I think a change in pace and more time spent on a project will be nice. I would benefit from that if I weren't so lazy.

Also, what brand of shapers did you get? I have always wanted some but never pulled the trigger.
