I almost had a heart attack when I thought the site was down for another stretch; super happy that it was just a few days.

I was able to finish my seekers off. Unfortunately most of them were glued too well to their bases, so I had to jury rig them up, but I'm otherwise really happy with how they turned out.

Ordered the Leviathan from Dark Sphere, was a lot cheaper than I thought it was going to be which is great as the resin one was so damn expensive. Grabbed some more paints as well which I'll need for my loyalists when GW start releasing older gear.

Also ordered myself some magnets from Wayland, then did a second order as they got other magnets I had my eye on in after I placed the first order (just my luck) and some brass rods to copy this which is all I want for my Vexillas now. Once they arrive I can get started on my contemptors, my deimos and my Kratos which should break up having to build 30 tacticals.

I also ordered the siege leviathan, a box of specialist support weapons as well as picked up Corax yesterday.

I finished painting my praetor. Gor about half way finished with my contemptor. And got transfers on my 2nd legion tactical squad. Should have some fun knocking those out this week.

The bases look great! I was concerned about the same, so I put down cork first in anticipation and can work around it with the models slightly raised. Yours look like they’ve deliberately chosen where to walk!

Afternoon fellow frater, could someone tell me the points value of the whole box if you do it all as one army? After seeing Mengels Ultramarines in the WIP forum it’s got me thinking about buying a box and building them as Ultras. I have the Hereticus book and the Loyalist book but not the actual box as I was fence about getting it but like I said above I’m really thinking of dipping my toe in.

With little-to-no upgrades, you're looking around the 1,500pts mark. With upgrads spread across the units it gets closer to the 2,000pts mark. For the cost of the box, it's a really good deal for a starting army.

Depends on the loadout and squad size, but I think the issue is that both HQs are Praetors, but you could finagle one of them to being a Centurion:

  1. Praetor with Paragon Blade and Volkite Charger (sword dude) - 152 (if a Centurion, 77)
  2. Praetor with Paragon Blade and Archaeotech Pistol (axeman) - 165 (if a Centurion, 77)
  3. Cataphractii (5) - minimum 175, maximum 340*
  4. Cataphractii (10) - minimum 325, maximum 585*
  5. Tactical Squad (10) - minimum 100, maximum 193 [can have 4 of these]
  6. Tactical Squad (20) - minimum 200, maximum 325 [can have two of these]
  7. Contemptor - minimum 175, maximum 225 (cannot have max points with the box)
  8. Spartan - minimum 350, maximum 455

* Cannot build either with just the box, the instruction's build results in a squad of that's 220 or 240 if you go power fists or chainfists (225/245 with a Heavy Flamer)), respectively for a 5-man, or it's 430 or 480 for a 10-man (440 or 490 with heavy flamers)

So the box is between 1429 and 2087 points, depending on wargear and what you run the HQs as. However the main issue is the Cataphractii and Contemptor don't have their entire wargear options in the box, which messes with the points.

What the box's artwork shows (as in, you build them exactly as the models on the box are)

  1. Praetor with Paragon Blade and Volkite Charger (sword dude) - 152 (if a Centurion, 77)
  2. Praetor with Paragon Blade and Archaeotech Pistol (axeman) - 165 (if a Centurion, 77)
  3. Cataphractii (10) - 445 (2 pairs of Lightning Claws, Power Sword and Grenade Harness on Sergeant, 4 Power Fists, 3 Chainfists, 2 Heavy Flamers)
  4. Contemptor - 195 (Autocannon, Fist w/ combi-bolter, Havoc Launcher)
  5. Tactical Squad (10) - 140 (Plasma Pistol + Power Sword on Sgt, Vexilla, Nuncio-Vox and Augury Scanner) [two of these]
  6. Tactical Squad (20) -281
  7. Spartan - 405 (always assume Flare Shields are taken on a Spartan)

Total: 1728, roughly

TL;DR: between 1.5k to 2k, actually around 1700

That’s a superb breakdown @Gederas - always find that useful when looking at boxes to see what I can use or repurpose. I’m sure others will find that very helpful too. I’ve found it a great start to a new Legion so far!

I personally never got into the cork for basing.  And usually I can finagle a bit more natural looking clutter on the base, even after the model is on, but having it fully painted is a whole other story lol.

I totally get that: I don’t want it to look like cork and the end result should hopefully render it pretty unrecognisable… It’s a helpful starter for slabs of rubble certainly, but I have to ensure it doesn’t look like I’ve just put cork on the base and said ‘that’s fine’ .

My biggest debate is the overall colour in relation to the armour… I think I have a good plan…

Speaking of cork basing...

I like to tear a 1/4" sheet in half and use it rough side up - it's very nice for getting uneven terrain. Getting the minis' feet to stick can be an issue, so I usually pin one foot. I haven't done the second part yet in the pic below, but that's where I put rubble and texture paste on to blend the material in a bit better.

I'm working on Sevatar and have a dilemma. His lower shoulder pad parts aren't really standing out to me, and just blending into the rest of the blue armour.

I have a few options to solve this problem:

1. Glaze more blue in and make a stronger gradient This might be the most obvious; the blue hasn't had any touchups past it's initial pass and is still a bit rough.

2. Make the middle part (between the trim and the crescents) gold. It would reinforce the artificered nature of the armour and help frame the unique crescent parts of the shoulders. Also I'm going to have to go through the gold mix anyways to capture all the scrollwork (thanks camera, I wasn't sure if it was just ink splatters).

3. Make the middle and crescents black to match the upper pads. This would definitely break up the blue, but I'm also worried about using too much black and undermining the seekers use of it.

4. Combine #2 & #3. This would help reduce the amount of black, still add to the artificed look, and define the areas.

Really would appreciate any thoughts!

I love that! I’ve gone for partially sticky on one side for ease, and I’ll then build texture from there. That’s ideal though!

What about darkening the blue? Not having it completely black but dark enough to show the different panneling?

That's kind of what I meant by option #1. Building up the shadows properly and the dark to light gradient on the flat parts.

Might as well try it first regardless on what else I decide to try.
