Building my first Heresy units, two apothecaries and two tactical squads. A 10 man squad and a 20 man squad of MkIV from Betrayl at Calth boxes I bought years ago and never assembled... Some FW upgrades that I also bought ages ago, including the now oop Invictarii torso upgrades on the sergeants to represent artificer armor. I originally intended to make Sternguard Veterans for 40k out of the Invictarii upgrades, but now I'm planning to use them to make a Legion Veteran squad and a Locutarus Storm squad.

Thought I'd share a little hobby tip: staples make great meat hooks.

Small tips for using staples: you'll obviously need to drill a hole through whatever you want to hook to the model (I used a pin vice). A pair of small needle nose pliers make it easier to bend the staples, and I use an old pair of hobby clippers to cut the staples to length (don't use your good ones, the cutting edge will get chewed up).

Played another 'learning' game last night (not using Legion rules yet, but did use Legion equipment). 500 points of Zone Mortalis. My Alpha Legion (Delegatus plus 2 veteran squads) vs. my son's Word Bearers (Champion, Contemptor, Tactical squad).  You see here the Word Bearers make an early advance into my table quarter (my Delegatus is just out of shot).  Before the fighting starts in earnest, a couple of shots were exchanged, stripping a wound each from the Delegatus, mk vi veterans and Contemptor.

You'll like this next bit. In order to stop the contemptor rampaging into my lines, and teach the little blighter a lesson, I charge the dreadnought with my Delegatus. The dreadnought misses all his attacks (ha!) and smugly I whip out a meltabomb.

large.IMG_1581.jpeg.188eb48a2f51c6775094bfabc84adeae.jpeg

My son: "Dad, what does an Atomantic Deflector do?"

Me: "I dunno, invulnerable save or some such. You'd better read it"

You can see where this is going, I was very unimpressed with the ability to do D3 wounds. In any event, he actually missed with the meltabomb anyway, and was prompty murdered in the next round.

Main learning points from the game:

  • Zone Mortalis is fun and the different reactions make the game play differently
  • 500 points is not enough. There are so few units that there are rarely tough choices to make about reactions.
  • WS5 is really worth it.  And this starts an arms race: WS6 becomes worth it too.

Now I just need to find a way to kill dreads. Meltabombs on characters are not enough, krak grenades are no use because AP3.  Looks like it will need a battle of attrition: needing squad-wide melta, or thunder-hammering terminators, or just another gravis powerfist coming the other way. Other ideas gratefully received.

@Loquille Wow, he looks amazing! :woot:

@Casual Heresy Those Mk VI look awesome as Breachers!

@LameBeard Looks like a fun game, love that Dread scooping up a victim!

@BitsHammer Your technique should be a... wait for it... staple in everyone's toolbox

Meanwhile, I finished around 500 points of Night Lords recently and made another Youtube video about it, more details in the thread linked in my signature.

Working on some speeders, modified the Mars pattern:

They look amazing. How did you do the dorsal fin? How did you get the fronts so smooth? Is that a grav weapon underneath on one of them? These are all features I would like to copy with mine.

@Kabin Miniatures Thanks for the kind words. I helped my son with the dreadnought conversion - just trying to improve on the stock Calth pose.  It amuses us that the inhabitant hates Ultramarines so much, he carries a couple around to crush even when fighting other legions.  Those Night Lords look beautiful, really great conversion on the Praetor.

Have finally got round to playing my first game of 2.0 - thoroughly enjoyed, and pleased to be getting to grips with the intricacies of this edition. Of course, my whole army for the game was basecoated, but I’m really excited to be cracking on and getting things painted… so, next steps begin tonight! Photos to come in due course.

finally got together the bits to kitbash together the Raven Guard Deliverer photobash I did a few months back, very happy with how the layered feathers kinda give off a Sons of Horus vibe

While I'm starting to lean towards Swift Blade Night Lords I'm still adding things to the legion, this time a librarian and a Praetor I'll run as having a Paragon Blade and the Flaymaster warlord trait .

My take on the Locutarus storm squad. Praetorian head and torso upgrades from FW, swords and jump packs printed. I glued bits of sprue under their feet to make basing easier later, no clue how I'm going to base them yet though.

I got super excited by the death guard reveal and painted up one of my own, though it's still a WIP

Joke aside, I do really like how it's coming along and I have done death guard in two different schemes in the past; maybe it's time for a third in their heresy colours. It's already very simple, and I can strip out some steps to really streamline things. Just gotta get an olive green that actually has coverage lol.

Sorry for necroposting, but how do you make those drapes? :O

Take at look at this tutorial by BCK:

the only thing I would add to the method is a final layer of ‘Ard coat to get a smother finish, unless you particular like the more granular texture.

Decided I needed a Delagatus and Bile was happy to volunteer spare parts for the cause.

Of course this has the side effect of making the Delagatus taller than the Praetor but I think the tall lean look fits a support character.
