…And if popular $$ wise , hopefully a xenos expansion !!

I may have to get it even if it’s HH Epic, I’m sure I can paint up half of it as chaos - black legion probably !. I’m sure conversions at 8mm? Would be pretty basic and easy to do …

My fervent hope (which won't happen) is that Adeptus Titanicus gets a rulebook added for Tanks and Infantry, and another for Aircraft.

AT18 is extremely tight for a GW ruleset, adding would be better than replacing.

And sure, then bring in Xenos and 40k it up as needed.

This could well be the case (with simple rebranding) we simply have no idea at the moment other than the rumours about its return.

I'd prefer to 40k too but, even making it 30k based, the factions around then could be:

-Astartes, 18 Legions and all those wonderful relic toys.

Mechanicum, Loyalist and Traitors. Cables, Sensors and weird rayguns all the way up to Super Heavy Ordinance.

-Daemons, four flavours of yuk. Up to Lords.

-Eldar, plenty of effete sub factions and up to Titans.

-Dark Eldar, plenty of subfactions. Shady Swift devil's.

-Astra Militarium, Loyalist and Traitors. Bringing all the Tanks and Artillery.

-Orks. Being Orkish, Morkish or Gorkish all the way up to Mega Gargants.

Then add in all the Aircraft for all those Factions, and wow.

AT is currently only Knights and Titans, Loyalist and Traitors, with some static terrain based weapons.

There's plenty of room to grow the game into Epic without even rebranding.

Yeah thats my biggest worry with them setting Epic in 30k, they do like they did with Titanicus and would rather choke it out than expand out to more factions.

At that point, why not just make it 40k. I see no reason to restrict Tyranids, T’au, and Necron fans

Because they wouldn't need to rebrand.

Expanding AT18 with two-three faction books and the plastic needed to play them is much easier than redoing the lot.

And so far GW have been risk averse in the 8mm scale space.

Did someone noticed that we hadn't any AT or AI Articles in the WD since a long time?

  • Last AT Article was in 473 (Feb 22)
  • Last AI Article was in 475 (Apr 22)

April 2022 was also when the first Epic rumors since a long Time started to spread.

Because Epic will be a niche Game and Space Marines are an no-brainer, HH is selling and the risks of investment for GW is lower with only "one" faction than bringing various Factions which possible could sell poor and fail to pay back the costs.

They could later expand into the Great Crusade, with different Factions that those from the M41. Would be the most logical "expansion" for Epic when a HH Version is "successfull", they could bring completely new Stuff instead of make it just 40k in small.

If EPIC makes a return I'd certainly buy in.

With no insight other than my own head I suspect that any new set will be Horus Heresy which is a shame.

I'd love to see some eldar Titans and Gargants on the AT18 battlefield. I fondly remember Codex Titanicus which introduced those two races for the original AT and a similar book for AT18 would be most welcome.

The AI being in the same scale gives me hope but it's been over a year since any significant release for either game so hopefully something will happen soon.

Cheers

For the same reason the Horus Heresy was invented in the first place with the original Adeptus Titanicus game: One set of sprues is needed for both sides.

Adeptus Titanicus when it returned could have flopped. So by making it Horus Heresy thats only the investment on one lot of kits risked, not two lots. It's the same reason Warlord Games chose the American Civil War for their first Epic scale release, they could use the same sprues for both sides.

As I've commented on other threads relating to rumours of Epic returning this year:

- the Heresy setting is an easy win for GW - two sprues (Infantry, Tanks) plus Titans plus AI aircraft gives you the game

- remember, the original Epic started with the original AT, and was pretty much where the Heresy background began! Even back then it was Marines & Titans v Marines & Titans.

- that game got a second edition, Epic Space Marine, which added 40k factions like Orks, Eldar, Guard, Nids and Squats (!)

- given time, if this new Epic set is popular, we'll likely see the same happen - more factions to make the game in to the 'Epic' version of 40k

- in the meantime, don't be deterred by the Heresy setting. In fact, the scale of the game is perfect for the setting with its titanic (no pun intended! ) battles consisting of multiple companies (hundreds if not thousands!) of Marines, massed formations of Tanks, maniples of Titans and other warmachines.

I would expect they can project sales a lot better these days though, and indulge in a little risk. Titanicus was popular enough that they couldnt keep it in stock for a long while, even before the ongoing manufacturing issues, helped by being a genuinely great game ofc and they have had plenty of time to expand the range buuuut.... *crickets chirping*

That said i had heard Aeronautica disappointed, which is a shame because it seemed fun, just came out ahead of all the lockdowns which i think killed uptake.

Nothing is ever guaranteed to sell. And its far easier to argue for the release of an expansion for a successful product than it is to pitch a large investment on an untested product. Don't get me wrong, id love a full Epic 40k release. But a Horus Heresy set is far more likely.

Bear in mind though, Epic really was a core game for years, its not a legacy of specialist games or anything, it was arguably bigger than warhammer before they wound it down because of worries about sales cannibalisation (I fully expect it was more complicated than that ofc) and even the spin off known to be less popular than the others (AI) merited extensive plastic ranges, and as ive mentioned before you can do a lot with relatively few sprues at epic scale.

Start with a heresy box if you lack faith in that, its certainly understandable, but dont brand it as HH: Epic and stick there like they have done with Titanicus, give us Orks, Eldar, Proper Chaos, whatever but keep the range growing solidly.

The thing about these debates around Xenos and Titanicus/Epic is that ultimately the vast majority of people are going to end up playing some flavour of Astartes/Imperial anyway.

The appetite to have Xenos in these games is certainly there, but in practice it seems more like there's a lot of people who want Xenos in order to play their Marines against them, rather than collect them themselves, and then it goes full-circle and basically becomes Marine vs Marine anyway, only without the grounding of the Heresy to 'justify' such engagements being that way.

I mean thats just not particularly true? Speaking historically epic was always a lot more rounded than 40k in its representation, though that was in a quite different era for 40k. Almost everyone has a marine army in 40k these days because they come in the starters and are on a different tier for support and favour from the company thanks to their popularity but that was never really the case in Epic editions.

Anecdotally of my group that have sizeable collections the only armies that have doubled up are Orks and imperial guard, both of which work much better at that scale, far from coincidentally :D Tyranids too but their range is so out of synch now due to age its a bit off putting for some, but ive seen some amazing Gaunt/Ripper swarm models out there that really take advantage of the scale.

Even in a single faction system like Titanicus though there are limits to what most people buy for a faction, like i have every Titan im ever likely to buy right now unless i decided to start a new army, as have essentially all my gaming buddies, im pretty sure at least half would buy right into a xeno race.

But yeah, dont judge everything by 40k, its not always relevant. (See also Battlefleet Gothic and Aeronautica for more examples)

Aeronautica is a pretty good example, actually. These days most I've seen are Space Marine aircraft (although the Heresy expansion didn't hurt). Imperial Navy and Orks did well by virtue of being first out the gate, but Marines quickly caught up despite being released after most people had already written off the game as 'dead'. I doubt they're going to start a new edition of Epic with Imperial Guard vs Orks (although I'd certainly like that).

BFG's a weird one just because Marines weren't the clear Daddy's Favourite they are in a lot of games, but the Imperial Navy was still the most popular faction.

Anecdotal, etc. I'd have no problem with Epic being set in 40k, but equally I wouldn't blame GW or be surprised if they did opt for the Heresy just by virtue of knowing Daddy's Favourite is going to be getting the majority of the sales.

I get that, but I was responding to a post that mentioned bringing in Xenos relevant during the Great Crusade. If your gonna go so far to bring in Eldar and Orks, why not just go fully into the 40k setting instead
