Hey all, I'm very new here as I decided to make an account after lurking for a while and seeing some amazing 30k conversions which really inspired me; I had to make an account to show my respects and contribute to the community. I'm currently working on a 2000pt Night Lords list which is sadly a bit slow to be painted, I'll post my currently completed models and will update as I get more painted. As I paint models individually as opposed to batch style I tend to have a lot of pictures for my relative lack of models. Additionally I'm admittedly fairly bad at any conversion past kitbashing and have a fairly low pool of forgeworld to draw on, as such my models won't be as awesome as some users, but I do try and make up for it with my paint jobs.

 

Now because I have a lot of photos and there's a limit I'll have to post a few times to get all caught up with my finished models.

 

To start will be my Praetor and the first two guys in my terror squad:

For the praetor the goal was really a test model; I hadn't tried painting Night Lords in a while and wanted my scheme to be simple and dark and used a spare praetor model. I'm glad to say that the blue and bronze were exactly what I was looking for; I had to clean the volkite up a bit before I was happy with it which was post photos.

 

As mentioned earlier my conversion skills are pretty bad, but I still wanted to try and convey the fear rule the Terror Squads have; modelling wise I used skulls and chains, but painting wise I wanted to do something on their faceplates ala ADB to cause mortals to cower. Additionally to save time the freehand is pretty simple; my group plays fully painted only and I need to get them all painted!

 

First one up is crying "blood", whether its paint or real blood daubed on is a matter of taste, but either way mortals should still be frightened:

The second legionnaire I was drawing a blank as I hadn't wanted to try to do the classic Night Lords skull on the face yet or rip off some of ADBs designs as I imagined them to be a bit more time consuming, as such I painted "teeth" to make him look like a monster:

Second post to add more pictures! I'll be able to get through the rest of the five guys for my Terror Squad I have painted up so far in this one.

 

The third Legionnaire I literally drew a blank on (still fearing the more time involved freehand) so I did the lightning down his faceplate. I did change things up and put the legion symbol on his chest with the numerals replacing it on his left shoulder. Also thing to note is I added metallics and cleaned the skulls up after photos were taken:

With the fourth Legionnaire I finally took the plunge and painted a skull on his helmet, only to realize it was super easy regardless of them not wearing mkIV or greater helmets...It will definitely be reused (sorry for the blur on the last one):

The fifth (and currently final) Legionnaire is the Headsman; I'd just got my Anvil Chainglaives and my set of volkites so I really wanted to make him. I totally ripped off the "bloody handprint" from Uzas, though the detail is a bit tricky to make out. Due to the handprint and blood spatter on the glaive I did less lightning on him compared to the others in his squad:

Final post before it's up to date

 

When the Xiphon model dropped for preorder I knew I wanted one, however the price was really steep for one model. To save money and as a bit of a joke I bought the totally-not-inspiration of the xiphon to count as; the BSG viper. It's still technically unfinished as I have to paint up the rockets and dremmel a hole out for the flight stand, but other than that its done:

The last model I have painted, and the reason there's not more, is my personal favorite character in all of 40k fluff. 'Sevetar'. It took me a while to paint him as I did him in pieces to get all the detail in the nooks and cranies and I finished him up last night after 4 or 5 days. However, I wasn't really happy with some of the results (and the horrible 70s porn yellow tint my lamp had applied to my pictures) so I went back and readjusted some colours and shades and took photos not at 1am. Sadly having taken those new photos I can see yet more details I missed...

Things to note; there's really not a lot of space to do lightning on him and it makes it hard to break up the model (had to use a lot of bronze), also I did the skull on the right shoulder bronze as it looked distinctly feline and I figured it was a symbol for the Atrementar (adb said they were in bronze) without using the actual lion motif.

 

Excited to go back to my normal guys and get more progress on my army done

I'm in love. Your lightning is amazing, and Sevs headgear looks immense. So far, already among my all time personal favourites for plogs already.

 

Not personally a fan of the BSG model, as I love the Xiohon and understand how hard it can be.

All of that is absolutely amazing. I like the color scheme you have and the praetor is amazing. Can't wait to see more!

As for the xiphon; I really like the model too, just not for 150 CAD, I just like the BSG model a lot more for 40 CAD lol. If it wasn't for the purely coincidental similarities of the fuselage then i wouldn't have considered it and would have counts as'd something more 40k looking.

 

Great use of the Viper!  It isn't the classic one that I remember, but great paint jobs all round :smile.:

Thank you :) It was just khorne red and regal blue mixed together to get a slightly more realistic colour (also not a big fan of kantor blue, it'll be a sad day when I'm all out of regal) and then highlighted with the new blood red equivalent (evil suns I think?)

Have you thought about using vallejo? I have nothing but good things to say about them.

 

I have one pot of vallejo paint and the thing I noticed about it is its very thin; super good for small layers and airbrushing, but not great as a base coat (no airbrush). It's also a bit tricky to get where I live as I think only one store carries it on the city. I also have a pretty large amount of GW paint so I'd have to burn through all of that first before I get more paint :tongue.:

Great freehand on the lightning and faceplates. Really does the VIII justice.

 

 

Great work man, love the Viper! The lightning is awesome too - how did you do it?

The viper looks like an excellent vibrant for the night lords, a sleek killer.

 

Thanks so much guys, really helps the motivation and I should have the sixth Legionnaire mdone (except for the volkite) today.

 

For the lightning I use fortress grey; just do non-straight lines (throw some squiggles and sharp angles in there) on an angle to start with and then branch off at the most pronounced dip. I found that the more angled the initial lines are, the better the effect; it looks like its sheeting across the armour instead of idk, going straight down. You can see I made that mistake on Sevs right greave actually

If you use a bit of GS to remove some or all of the slits on a mark III you can get different effects. Also think of doing maybe Xeno and daemon looking skulls. They are fantastic already so you could just repeat what you've done :)

Yea I've seen some really cool effects done on Dantioch's Iron Warriors with that technique. The only problem is that I seem to have lost my greenstuff...especially frustrating since I really want to make some flayed skin trophies.

 

When I had originally took photos of Sevetar it was really late at night with my painting lamp giving the light source, creating a heavy yellow tint. You guys were fortunate enough to be spared those pictures, however there were some cool shots that were taken that the yellow ruined; I've since re-shot them while waiting for a wash to dry so here you go!
