Brilliant work, very inspiring. There is a marked improvement over your previous work and it seems like with each artwork in this thread your skills and style are improving and becoming stronger which is wonderful B)

The top three for me would be; The Lion, Magnus and the top being Russ, i cant stop going over the image. Its obvious a great deal of care, effort and heart went into him and I think I can speak for a majority in the community by saying we very much appreciate your efforts.

I cant wait to see what direction you go with Alpharius/Omegeon and Khan

Good Luck hope to see more soon :)

EDIT: Nice if i could spell correctly first time round :P

While loving most of your primarchs, I am not overwhelmingly excited by your Magnus. Sorry. Feels the least fluff of everything so far in my opinion. Your artistic talent is still impressive though, its just the concept behind Magnus I don't "get". I look forward to your future work as always.

Where can i see your other work? as in the other pictures of the primrchs before you did these ones please?

oh yeah... can you believe i registered just to ask that? :P

It's quite easy to believe :P Check out Aerion's photobucket account here. First page, Konrak Curze/Night Haunter is down there and page two has Magnus, Fulgrim, the Lion, Dorn, Sanguinius and Ferrus.

he's only supposed to have one eye!!!!!

didn't he only have one eye after his ascension?

According to fluff Magnus wasn't cyclops literally, he had two eye-sockets but had one eye (if you understand me). But the way Aerion pictured Magnus is even better: the third-all-seeing-eye!!! That really shows his arcane nature!!!

As always, Aerion, you did the awesome work!!!

Indeed - just like the Greek cyclops. Makes it far more mythological.

I realize this is a long thread, so I haven't done the "search-fu" on it.

Just a comment (or reiteration of the previous comment, if such exist), I noticed the primarches are facing certain direction. Loyalist are facing to the viewer's (i.e. yours) left whilst the Traitors are facing the right. Pretty cool, huh?

That is cool!

And sadly, I didn't notice it until you pointed it out...

So, thanks!

am i the only one looking forward to Guilliman?

i love your style of artwork , its very (or atleast the faces)... Jhonen Vasquez (that JTHM and ZIM for those of you who don't know)

To put it bluntly... yes...

I can't wait for Vulkan, though! Go go Vulkan!!! ;)

Y'know what'd be rather cool? Battle scenes between two of the Primarchs, like Leman Russ and Magnus the Red, or maybe Ferrus Mannus and Fulgrim, and so on. But the Emperor and Horus (with the dead Sanguinius in the background) is a must! ^_^

Always loving your work Aerion, can't wait for the next Primarch!

Not at all man. I can barely wait myself. Fortunately quality has taken a priority over quantity. So lets not rush the final products.

Salutations once more, brothers...

First off, and as usual with my replying after so many kind words and compliments on your part, I'd like to THANK YOU enormously for always bringing up this thread and encouraging me to go on. I'm always amazed to come by the B&C to check threads and topics and find that every couple of weeks, this gallery of mine has been put in the front page again! I'm happy that there are still fans that haven't seen these and are liking them as well as people who saw them are liking them even more or finding new details on them.

I can't, unfortunately, get to all of the replies personally as I'd like, but I do want you to know I read each and every one of them and I'm quite aware of the critiques and suggestions you propose regarding who's coming next and what you thought of each new one posted.

Now, as I said elsewhere, this one took a lot of work. As I told my client, Mortarion was always a bit troublesome for me. For reasons I've yet to discover, the brave leader of the Death Guard Legion seemed to be as ominous as his whole background and the passion the fans always had for him, making him as daunting as Russ, or The Emperor.

Perhaps it was combining both the decadence and rust of his armour as well as the nobility and stature he had during the Great Crusade times, or making his deathly, ghastly looks honourable still so that you'd be both afraid and awestruck; but, whatever it was, it paralised my pencil more than enough times...

And then there was the fact that Adrian Smith (one of my faourite Dark Millenium illustrators) had done such a good job of rendering Mortarion that I felt compelled to copy his design, but felt I was cheating if I did.

After all of the above fears were overcome, I came to this illustration you see here which has satisfied me greatly.

I think there are more original elements here to call this my own as with all of my other Primarchs, but I still kept some of the established looks for him so that he was recognisable as a character.

The overall composition I think has a lot of strength and oozes a dark, brooding mood, which I think fits the Death Guard perfectly. The detail of the sunken eyes and the masked visage of Mortarion also make for a very mysterious atmosphere, coupled with my trying to keep the armour as ghastly as I could. You will notice I've left most of the top part of it in the traditional white colours of the Legion, whilst keeping mostly dark tones in the lower torso, thus enhancing the Death aspect and skeletal reminiscence of the figure (also enhanced by the power cables acting as a ribcage).

The scythe is another detail I'm quite proud of, as it came out looking both dangerous and noble and you'll notice it's the only bit that has no rust in it, as if the Primarch took care of its cleansing each time he carried it into battle.

Finally, the look of Barbarus is also something I relished in very much. I did a lot of designs of Mortarion's homeworld as well as its inhabitants (both human and local) way back when and was happy to put them to use here.

I hope all of you Death Guard fans like this rendition of your beloved Primarch and let me know what you think, as usual!

Until very soon!

Aerion.-
