Wow only just read this thread...awesomeness

first reaction: shocked silence

second reaction: drooled onto keyboard

third reaction: cried in mindnumbing joy at the godliness of these minis

but seriously, that is what I call good work (applause)

Hey gang,

I broke down and decided to finish the raptors without going wild on their heads. I re-did the banner into a war-scythe/icon, and added the flamer. I'm really happy with how the icon came out and i'm getting ready to start painting them soon. Brainstorming some schemes to differentiate them.

When there's details i want to keep on the legs i'm very careful of where i make cuts and how i file and carve them clean. In some cases though there's no way you can keep some of the details on legs, so most of them have to be just cut off.

Lord_Caldera

The bad ass? Well, It took me 4 pair of legs and a couple of weeks to finally get the pose i was looking for. One leg is fron the Sang guard, one from possessed. The groin is fron a normal CSM leg and the feet had to be carved out of old legs and stuck in at the right angle. Maybe 5-6 pair of legs then, it certainly wasn't easy. If you look at the model closely one half of him is in one armor mark, and the other half in a different mark. It's supposed to represent the duality of Astartes, or something...

Yeah the pred turret is kind of high. While i was making the tank i was thinking about bradleys and shermans so a little bit of retro sherman style got stuck in there. I went back after your comment (because the turret had been bugging me) to try and see if i could cut it down. Unfortunately I can't without completely remaking the vehicle.

Hope you guys enjoyed. Sorry for the cruddy pics, i've lost the knack for it.

The Apocthecary objective is a new favorite, looks similar of the old artwork showing a pre-heresy Iron Warrior tending to his fallen brother. Looks great, man.

It took me a while to figure out what my guys would bother fighting and dying over (objective wise). Going the route of a pair of bolters, ammunition, and armor didn't seem like a good enough reason for the 18th to commit forces to and loose manpower and equipment. As far as i'm concerned anything that i could imagine fitting on a 40mm base wasn't worth fighting and dying over, with one exception though, their brothers.

I wanted to make a diorama that depicted a couple of different things. While making the "recovery team" i thought about the 18th company's structure. I imagined they would create self sufficient teams to recover wounded brethren, gene seed, and equipment. Obviously i can't fit apothecaries into my CSM list so i found this was the best way to give my army a bit of depth. IN addition to that what better way to secure your dwindling apothecaries, and the delicate process of recovering gene seed, than having a heavy bolter wielding battle brother watch over them.

The diorama has evolved a handful of times but the theme has remained somewhat constant. I wanted a scene of grief and loss amidst a quiet stony exterior. I ended up trying to model the casualty on the brink of death with his demise evident in the posture of the apothecary and security detachment. Working with the casualty himself I tried to make him look totally ruined, yet still bad ass and angry. He is still strong and stubborn enough to support his weight through clenched fists and keep his head up despite serious injury. I played with lines and angles to keep the eyes attracted to the piece, and i'm pretty happy with it. I also plan on painting the Apothecary and security Astartes with some white recovery designation, haven't figured that out fully though.

I know the Iron Warrior artwork you're talking about. It's funny i was a couple of weeks into modeling the objective before i went looking for inspiration and stumbled upon the picture. It's an awesome piece of art, and was most likely a very strong inspiration.

Do i think too much about this stuff?

Man this stuff here is so damn cool. I have been following this thread for a couple of months actually, and it is part of the reason (along with Raz' Word Bearers) why I joined this site and was inspired to start collecting Warhammer proper again after a 4 year break. So thank you so much for the inspiration and the absolutely awesome Night Lords army. The objective is simply so jaw-droppingly kickass that.. I dunno. But it's awesome. And the raptors; God dayum. Bezerkers are also so cool, there's so much! Great army! I am so amazed at the amount of effort you put into this stuff, especially reading your last post haha. So no, I don't think you think too much about this stuff.

Anyway, from a lowly collector/painter, thank you sir :P

Do i think too much about this stuff?

Not at all. The best armies and characters i have seen sculpted and painted have always had strong fluff behind it. I think it can only inspire people like yourself to create better peices if you have something pushing you on. You can certainly see that in this last peice with the apothecary.

I would suggest though, if i may, that the marine with the heavy bolter might look slightly better if he was in a more relaxed pose. The heavy bolter could be more at a 45 degree angle facing toward the ground rather than a ninety, i think this would make him look rather more sobre as he looks over at his fallen brother rather than rigid. :P

Nice work on the Raptors! :P Is the Taurus Legionnaire still part of that squad? B)

Funny, I made a similar objective for an abandoned Space Marine army, several years ago: http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c274/fir...y_Objective.jpg

Yours is obviously realised far better than mine was! :o

Nice work on the Raptors! :) Is the Taurus Legionnaire still part of that squad? :)

Yeah he is. Just trying to figure out how to paint him as part of the cult. I don't want him to stand out like a sore thumb, but I also want to keep your paint scheme and theme. If the whole cult is blue and he is bronze it may look funny. i'm tossing around ideas of mixed armor or shoulderpads.

What do you think?

Hmm, that is a bit of a conundrum. How about doing his chest and shoulders bronze, and the rest Midnight blue? That's enough to denote him as originating from the Legion, but should ensure he doesn't stand out too much...

"Fear not Brother, you shall not have died in vain!"

"Oh, um, well I'm not dead..."

"Oh...well, you shall not have been mortally wounded in vain!"

"Actually, it's really not that bad. I think I can pull through"

"Look, it's this, or a dreadnought!"

"Ah. Right then, have at that gene seed."

:P

Oh well, live and learn. That tank and everything else still looks wicked. Ever get that true-scaling Tutorial finished? ;)

That made me laugh for a good moment. Epic! ;)
