Thats it! Im going for a 2 army proyect! Black Legion (or word bearers?) and loyalists (not sure who yet). I would actually like to know how you did the black.

The black was pretty straight forward. I gave the black areas a fairly light dry-brush with Mechanicum Standard Grey and then washed it with Nuln Oil. I then added a little white to the grey for the final highlights (mostly on the helmet).

now this is def worth watching, love the hound champion, really jealous of that one.

Thanks mate glad you like it!

He looks awesome Brother

Thanks bro!

  • 1 month later...

I've been working on my entry for the 'March of the Legions' project over in the HH forum. If you haven't seen this community project yet, I highly recommend that you have a look and get involved.

Anyway, this month is all about the XXth Legion. I've never painted an Alpha Legionnaire before but I've wanted to try out Forgeworld's new colour scheme for a while. That means that this project is a bit of an experiment for me and I'll be taking step by step photos to document my progress.

I'll just start off with a picture of the base coated mini and post some more when I get a chance tomorrow.

To start off with I've just given the armour and metallic areas a base coat (two thin coats for better coverage) of Ironbreakers.

More pics tomorrow, thanks for looking

Just finished the Hounds of Abaddon Champion. I think he turned out better than I expected. Once I finally got some spot colours on him (the red and yellow) it brought the darker colours together. I still need to work on my blacks but I'm learning...

THIS IS SWEET BROTHER

That is going to look ace

And I've just seen your tester. You've chosen the right leg to go with for certain.

Thanks bro, hopefully I can replicate the tester successfully :)

Excellent start. So, you'll be using the Tamiya clear coat recipe?

That's the idea. I don't have an airbrush though so it has be bit more challenging to achieve a good result.

THIS IS SWEET BROTHER

Thanks mate! I'm pretty happy with how he turned out. The black armour was a bit of a challenge but the other colours and details pulled it all together.

I promised to take some step by step pics of the Alpha legionnaire and here they are. I'll hid then in spoiler tags because there are quite a few...

After the initial base coat of Ironbreaker I used some thinned down Abaddon Black to 'black line' the armour. I could have simply used a Nuln Oil wash but I wanted to keep the metallic base as clean as possible.

Once the Abaddon Black was dry I applied the first coat of Tamiya Clear Blue. I've found the Clear Blue fairly difficult to work with and had to use a lot of Lahmian medium to get the right consistency and flow.

http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l522/kizzdougs/DSCN3182_zpsc7d1deca.jpg

After applying two more coats of the Clear Blue, I highlighted the edges of the armour with Runefang Steel. In hindsight I should only have highlighted on the actual edges of the armour, such as around the knee pads, and left areas such as the front of the greaves clear.

http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l522/kizzdougs/DSCN3184_zpsaa5cb861.jpg

The next stage was to apply Tamiya Clear Green to the raised areas of the armour. Again, I had the same problems that I had with the blue.

http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l522/kizzdougs/DSCN3186_zps94d2b153.jpg

That was it for the armour. I did go back with some Abaddon Black just to add some more contrast particular parts of the armour, such as the joints on the back of the greaves and around the wrists and knees.

I've got plenty of more photos but I just though that people would be most interested in the armour.

...and here are some picts of where I'm up to now.

I should have him pretty close to finished tomorrow.

Thanks for looking

Nice looking alpha Kizzdougs..

Kudos to you for trying the forgeworld scheme!

Now you said you had problems with the tamiya clear, if I can offer some advice as it it strange paint to work with.

When thinning those its best to use either tamiya x-20a thinner or vallejo glaze medium..they both have the power to thin it while keeping the colour consitent..to be honest I would lean more towards the glaze medium...it also makes lahmian medium seem like treacle lol..

Again mate top work...might have a go myself now you have taken the time to provide a really decent step by step..thanks

Nice work, good to see that you are also true to the forgeworld artworks :tongue.:

Thanks! I've always wanted to try the Forgeworld scheme and this seemed like the perfect opportunity :)

Thanks for the info bro. I'll head down to my local hobby shop and see what they have available. I'm pretty sure they'll have the Tamiya thinner. I'd love to see how you go with the colour scheme

Brilliant Alpha Legionnaire! I'm aiming for the same scheme using the Tamiya clears, didn't order the green though :unsure.:

The green isn't essential, it's just there to add some depth. You could easily get away with a thinned down green wash/glaze from the GW range.

Kizz that looks awesome, man! I'm using your mini tutorial for my own. Now, how to do weathering? :biggrin.:

Haha, that's a really good question. The scheme doesn't seem to lend itself well to weathering. I'd probably keep it fairly simple with some dust around the lower legs. I'll definitely keep an eye out to see how you go with it :)

:jawdrop: :jawdrop: :jawdrop:  Loving. It.

Thanks bro! :)

nice work on the AL!

Thanks dude :)

That's beautiful!

Will be buying Tamiya Clear Blue and Green today!

Thanks bro! Good luck with the clear colours :)

The legionnaire is just about finished now. I think I'll try some freehand detail on the armour, I'm just a bit nervous about stuffing it up... It'll be hard to fix any mistakes because it will be almost impossible to replicate the armour colour without the various steps...

Anyway, here he is.

WHAT IN THE ACTUAL :censored:!?!?!?!

This is http://i.imgur.com/UmpOi.gifly amazing! You've pretty much replicated the FW book art with this!

Haha, thanks mate! I've been trying to replicate the FW scheme so it's really gratifying to hear you say that :)
