Marshal Mattias
At 199 points precisely: 1 Sternguard Veteran Sergeant Standard loadout. 1 Sternguard Heavy Bolter - (relentless? Splitfire maybe?) 1 Sternguard Plasma Gun - (preferred enemy to re-roll shooting rolls of 1?) 1 Sternguard Combi-Melta - (infiltrate? Tank hunter?) 3 Sternguard Standard loadout. Essentially that should give me a lot of flexible shooting for all enemy types. A Melta shot for the odd rhino/chimera, heavy bolter to help. All the special ammo to deal with long range enemies/cover/higher toughness. Plasma for 3+ saves that can re-roll 1s when shooting (if I understood the kill team rules correctly). Crusader for mobility, AAC for the 'sarge' (Do all combats count as challenges or only character-on-character?) Briefly considered Fist tactics but then noticed the re-rolls don't affect special ammunition (obviously...) Marshal_Roujakis
How about swapping the Plasmagun for a Multimelta with Relentless, then exchanging the Heavy Bolter for a Plasma Cannon with rerolls 1 because that only needs one roll to check for overheat. then get 3 Combi-Flamers? is that still within the points limit, I don't have the Codex right now :p Just a suggestion... and here's my reasoning: Multimelta, so you don't need to get too close and if you miss that 1 shot, it won't be that bad because you get another try next turn (if you're still alive :p) Plasma Cannon, for taking down Hordes... albeit a Heavy Bolter is a little better because you could split the shots, but an AP2 blast is still formidable. Combi-flamer, because you don't know if you're going to need that overwatch... and if they group up that's a lot of wounds. Be careful of Nids as well, Lictors are NASTY! Marshal Mattias
Hmm, it's a tough call. I agree, the single combi shot is worrying. It'll probably miss, knowing my luck. But the split fire potential of the heavy bolter is attractive against troops, and I've swatted enough speeders out of the sky with heavy bolters to know they can take some armour down. I'm pretty sure that the moment I put a plasma cannon on the table, there's no chance anyone will bunch up much. Also, how does 'preferred enemy (any)' work with a plasma cannon? Because with a regular ranged weapon, I'd get to re-roll to-hit rolls of 1. With a plasma gun, this is great as I get a second chance to avoid the 'gets hot' as well as trying to get the hit. But I have to roll the 'gets hot' of the blast version before I roll to hit with the scatter, and I don't know how preferred enemy would help with that. I really just wish there was a better delivery system for my Melta that didn't require me to sacrifice the split fire heavy bolter or souped-up plasma gun... But even with the minimum size sternguard squad packing the heavy and plasma, that's 145 points. With 2 MSU crusader squads, I could get 10 men with 2 plasma guns, a heavy bolter and a multi melta, plus a sword brother upgrade. This means I keep the 'special' firepower and gain a few bodies along with the better anti-tank, but I lose the consistent advantage of the sternguard ammo, along with their veteran status for leadership and CC attacks. Soooo... I'm still not sure :( EDIT: Or, I could take 5 bikes with 2 plasma, combi plasma and an attack bike with multi-Melta...except then I might as well run White Scars, am I right? Because dang, that'd be something deadly on the tabletop... Elenmar
Preferred Enemy grants you re rolls if you roll a one to hit or wound and seeing that a plasma cannon doesn't roll to hit I don't think you would get the benefit. There is a special exception that you can get the reroll if you have an ability that lets you reroll all hits, but preferred doesn't give you that. Considering that the gets hot roll isn't on a to hit roll for a plasma cannon I don't think you would get a reroll for that either. As for choosing the composition of your kill team, the special ammo of the sword brethren gives you a lot killing power against a variety of foes which to me outweighs the durability of the crusader squad. I think the multimelta with relentless is a solid strategy as with that you can deal with any vehicle the enemy might have and any big nasty that you can instant kill. The second weapon is trickier, if you're a fan of the heavy bolter I'd say give it a shot. As for plasma weapons, do you think vengeance rounds won't be enough? Oh yeah and if you decide to go bikes then white scars is definitely the play there, which is sad. I want knightly bikes running people down with power lances to be good darn it! edit: You know what, I change my mind on the plasma cannon thing. The rulebook say even ballistic 6 can give you the re roll on the gets hot check, so I think you should probably be able to do it. Marshal Mattias
I think I would be happier sticking to BT tactics, so I will probably skip the undeniably tempting bike option. The option of preferred enemy on a plasma gun just seemed too good to be true... You only miss if you roll a two basically. And if you get to re-roll to wound if you roll a one, then you would be pumping out near enough two wounds guaranteed. But, a relentless multimedia would be fun. I don't have that model, though I could probably get one. Would you happen to know which box does it come in? I am tempted to agree that the sternguard will be more deadly overall than the crusaders. Plus, they seem more like a spec-ops unit to me and thus more fluffy as a kill team. And it helps that I recently put together a 10 man squad of those lovely templarfied hot-shots. ;) Edited March 11, 2014 by Marshall Mattias Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/284514-the-renascibilitas-crusade-redemptor-wip/page/3/#findComment-3617472 Share on other sites

Multimelta either comes as a stand-alone metal model, or the weapon itself comes in the Devastator Sprue, or you could also get the Legion of the Damned with Multimelta model. Marshal Mattias
Nice, that makes sense really... And a dev box would give me some nice options for my crusader squads. (Also I really want to use the crouched legs to make a templar champion kneeling in front of his sword, head bowed, chanting a litany of battle before challenging his opponent... Anyway I digress!) In other news, our resplendent master of death and destruction (the ref) has decreed that all multi-shot weapons have the split-fire rule as standard, so my brethren will be double-tapping all over the place! As such, it's goodbye heavy bolter and hello relentless multi-melta of doom goodness! Now I have also been informed that specialists can pretty much pick any special rule from the BRB, so relentless on a multi, preferred enemy on a plasma and that leaves a third rule free for use by either a standard trooper, a combi-flamer trooper or my sword brother Castellan... Marshal Mattias
And the kill team is forming! Under the stern guidance of their Castellan, the elite brethren of the chapter-keep household have sallied forth to investigate troubling reports from the isolated mechanicum world of Demon's Landing. Their goal is to discover the source of the disturbances, ascertain the purpose of the other factions in the region and attempt to bring the world back under control. If they deem the world lost, they intend to retrieve any useful technology and prepare for exterminatus. Marshal Mattias
Back from holiday and work must now continue on my kill team. But, there was a nice little package waiting for me... The latest 'reclaimed' technology for the crusade! http://i1287.photobucket.com/albums/a628/matzeke/D4BF44D2-2031-492A-B59B-580A8CF60207_zps4xruag3t.jpg The machine spirits are crying out to be purified from their heretic colours. Closer inspection revealed a stowaway marine looking to join the great purge. After he was thoroughly checked for signs of sparkliness, he was deemed fit to join our ranks. Marshal Mattias
So I figured a 'relentless' multi melta would be a stripped down and more portable version of the 'devastator' version. ie no enormous backpack. I used a spare landspeeder weapon and converted that to be fired a lot more easily by a footslogger. I imagine this as carrying the range and power of the full multi melta, but with limited ammunition as befits a small strike-force behind enemy lines :) Also, MAGNETS! This is super fun, (first time) and I'm pleased with the result as well as just how strong they are even at only 2mm diameter! http://i1287.photobucket.com/albums/a628/matzeke/304299C5-C802-45A2-84D5-C2C45C6B685C_zpsny8rqkvr.jpg http://i1287.photobucket.com/albums/a628/matzeke/9BA14EE3-4A73-4A64-AA18-12D0CDA35770_zpsu7lqpdln.jpg http://i1287.photobucket.com/albums/a628/matzeke/18A5A689-C196-4210-9185-247CDE7BC2D1_zpsa67meicd.jpg http://i1287.photobucket.com/albums/a628/matzeke/24C1CF47-0CA4-4D2F-9ABD-19B741D4403E_zpsevshixno.jpg Of course, I've only been slapping some base colours on so far, so long way to go with the paint job :P Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/284514-the-renascibilitas-crusade-redemptor-wip/page/3/#findComment-3635026 Share on other sites

Marshal Mattias
So I got distracted with wanting to get some life into my Castellan who will lead my Sword Brethren. Marshal Mattias
Of course, it's just a ludicrous way to try and fire a gun. But, I love a good action hero, jumping around firing two guns at once, as much as the next man. Anyway, this will really only be to give a little character to the kill-team. After the campaign, he will be shooting something more sensible ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/284514-the-renascibilitas-crusade-redemptor-wip/page/3/#findComment-3636994 Share on other sites

Well... you gotta remember as well that Space Marines aren't your average veteran... some of them have reached 200 years old with 98% of their life being focused on killing things (other 2% is on prayers & miscellaneous :p). That pretty much also means they have learned to be proficient in a lot of things... such as shooting gangsta style for the heck of it :D Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/284514-the-renascibilitas-crusade-redemptor-wip/page/3/#findComment-3637305 Share on other sites

DasPanzerIstUber
Well obviously it's ridiculous to use a firearm held sideways. In future please make more reasonable models such as Assault Squads You know, the ones that sensibly propel themselves across the battlefield with rocket backpacks, braving weird alien weaponry in a mad attempt to hit anything in the face with a chainsaw sword because a guy told you to do it 10000 years ago. 40k is mad.
