On models with a more open pose, the large chest plate is great for knot work.

Otherwise lower leg plates or fore-arms.

FW do some nice decals of knot work, but if going at it freehand then there are some great simple designs to try.

Gold wold look cool, but it might be too much with all the gold trim unless you can get some colour variation in there. Maybe a dark brown or deep red or black?

Another thing that might break up the colour is when the bolter gets fitted.

Have you tried seeing how he looks holding the gun?

I do my weapons a really dark red and it helps add a bit of colour to a model which is predominantly grey (khorne red with a drakenhof wash)

I like the idea of dark brown knotwork.

Here's a quick snap with the Bolter and some red accesnts/transfer.

The bulk of the army with have resin shoulder pads:

If you did the main colour of the knotwork in a dark blue-grey like the fang then a couple of spot highlights in your brightest highlight colour for your armour then it'll look etched in which could be a nice touch

I cannot wait to see how you do Russ, and I love the knotwork

How'd you do it?

I used Dryad Bark and carefully freehanded three curved lines.

First two started at the top, and went from top to bottom left and right respectively, and then the third was an arch connecting the two bottom points, if that makes sense?

I'm not entirely happy with it, so may have another attempt.

I'm stealing Bryan_Blaire's storm grey paint scheme to see if I can strike a balance between Heresy Grey and 40K blue/grey.

Freehand?!

I hate and love you at the same time

Knot work is awesome.

If brushwork is difficult to get the desired result.

Sakura do brown micron pens.

Although you need to give the ink a good while to dry fully then matte varnish as the ink is glossy.

I am planning on doing the vambrace brown like a leather covering with a dab of knotwork on it.

  • 1 month later...

It's been a slow couple of months hobby wise, but still managing to chip away at the painting pile.

I've just finished three more Thunderwolves, mounts for my Iron Priest and two additional pack members, allowing me to field two packs of three TWC:

I've used Valhallan Blizzard for the bases, instead of my own snow mix, so keen to see how it compares.

Also, watching the Warhammer TV Wolves game has inspired me to get my arse into gear with my Stormwolf:

More Helfrost goodness!

After sitting on my shelf for nearly a year, I've finally finished my Stormwolf. Seeing one nuke Magnus in the Warhammer TV battle report is really motivating!

As insane as it sounds, I had to get Company Markings on the pilot.

Tried to match the basing in with the rest of my army, but scaled up.

Love this profile shot, reminds me of a Colonial Viper, from the classic Battlestar Galactica.

Still a little bit of snagging to do, such as the helfrost runes (need to pick up the right colours for it) and a few bits that I missed (scrollwork on the front), but I'm happy for it to hit the gaming table.

Not sure if I'm going to add pack markings to the engine cowling yet. If I do, it will likely be red and black for Grey Hunters (or maybe red and yellow).

As always, C&C is welcome.

Cheers,

WW

Today's painting efforts:

Finally got round to dry brushing highlights onto my Drop Pods, also, base coated and dry brushed Razorback and Dreadnought, as well as Base coating and shade washing some new Thunderwolf Cavalry and an Iron Priest.

Not bad for a days work!

you did in a day what it would take me a week. Awesome!

Cheers bud. Some of it was already painted, like the pods, they just needed a highlight, but I'm fairly pleased with it.

Last night/todays effort:

A green stuff press mold for an OOP Space Wolves vehicle icon.

These will adorn my Dreadnoughts Drop Pod.

WW
