From the album: The First Legion, sons of the Lion
THis Hydra was painted in a slightly different scheme to represent the unit sitting in a yard, unused, for a few years. Heavy rust powder was appied and fixed to this unit to give a heavily rusted apperance. The cannons and turret as well as the carriage are all magnetic but the platform was too heavy to stay up for long.-

This Hydra was painted to resemble a piece that had been under heavy sustained fire and is very fire blackened.-

This is a pre-finished pic of a pair of Hydras from Forgeworld that I got about 1999, and finished in 2013. I am using the Salt-and-Hairspray method for speed, as these were to go up on ebay. Base caot was black, sponged on three colors of rust, brown, tan and orange. Sprayed with hairspray and coated with corse salt grains. Red overcoat with yellow and black warning stripes. Fast pass with a toothbrush and hot water to remove salt and then light brush with rust powder and metallic details. They didn't go for as much as I wanted, only about 35/45$. Only one had a carriage, forgeworld was out of stock at the time.-

Since the Death Guard/Plague Marines are notoriously grimy and heavy on the weathering, I thought I'd start a thread compiling some resources from the web. Feel free to contribute any of your own favorites and your own recipes too, but please try to provide a pic or two with the recipe so we can see how it looks. First up is some stuff from WarhammerTV WHTV - How to Build DG. WHTV - How to Paint Lord of Contagion WHTV - Weeping Legion scheme WHTV - Pallid Hand scheme WHTV - How to Paint Poxwalkers WHTV - Nurgle Skin WHTV - Toxic Bases WHTV - Plagueswords WHTV - Rusted Weapons WHTV - Armor Chipping WHTV - Dust and Dirt https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NVx62P6LLPg WHTV - Bubbling Vials https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5-BWaF1M5ps WHTV - Verdigris https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T4o-5HUFrx8 Here's some others I found on YouTube and might have more advanced techniques, like airbrushing. Hello BnC. Before 7th Ed. died out, I grabbed a few Dark Eldar boxes. I had an idea in mind, but I stripped the figures I did complete because I felt like I could do better. So here's a picture of a Poisoned Tongue Kabalite Warrior I did up. I used drybrushing to achieve a soft highlight on the armor. I think she looked fine and had a good combination of colors. But, well, I think it lacked something to make the model 'pop.' So I stripped them. After scrounging around the net and looking at a few artworks, such as this one: And this one: I figured that I don't need to force myself into doing the tried and true high contrast highlights that DE typically have, since their armor is made of metal... which means it can be weathered. It's also good, because I'm much more comfortable with weathering than I am highlighting. Now of course, they are Eldar afterall, so I won't go crazy with powders or pigments like I would on IG. I might do very slight chips, some scratched off paint on shoulders and kneepads, and maybe some powder to dust up their feet. I want it to look like they have been raiding a world for a bit and have gotten dirty, but I don't want it to look like they came out from the bottom of the sea. So with that out of the way, here are a few test subjects I've done so far I apologize for the crappy pic, but I think the red one and the green one on the left came out best. While the grey/black ones in the middle and on the far right kind of failed. I'm on the fence with the blue one (4th from left to right). I don't think he looks as good as the red or green ones, but he keeps with the blue Poisoned Tongue scheme I did earlier. And to anyone wondering, the look was done by basing all the armor plates in Leadbelcher and then doing two layers of shade. The second layer on some of these figs was from another shade color. I'm going to fully do up a couple of test figures with each scheme. If those fail to excite me, I will try doing flat, dark colors, and weathering those, for a more 'standard' style. So which ones do you guys like? Have any advice? Or am I going about this completely the wrong way? Any CC is welcome.
