So my paints have run out and my brushes have committed suicide (GW brushes really are pony), so I got to thinking what my force is missing to be combat effective against most of my friends slightly power centered lists. Bikes. That is what I was missing. So, I did a little eBay digging, some filing and a weapon swap and voila, the 3 Crusade Assault Force has its first 3 bikers.

The first bits turned up for my custom Legion of the Damned too, so that'll be my next project. Painting is on hold for a while til I can afford to restock everything and buy some decent brushes. Any recommendations?

As always, thank you for stopping by.

Thanks lads for the positive comments!

So I've been pretty out of sorts lately and it's affecting a lot of what I can do. Today was a calm day and I managed to get my first foray into Green Stuff (I did a Deathclaw built on a bloodletter for a Fallout tabletop I've got in the works, but can't rightly show that here) on 3 of my 5 Legionaries of the Damned. I prefer the idea of Malevolents throughout the ages since M32 coming back as the vengeful dead and manifestations of the Emperors will rather than some dudes in black armour with skulls everywhere.

The idea behind them is ethereal purple flames in their footsteps/glowing out of weapons while the bands between their armour will be glowing with the same eerie warp energy. My usual camera is in the shop for repairs so I'm using a shoddy replacement phone.

Shoddy but it works for me. I'll put some paint on them next week hopefully.

Cheers for stopping by.

Long time no comment, loving the LoTD

It has been a while!

Good to see you posting again look forward to seeing paint.thumbsup.gif

It's good to be somewhat back!

Brilliant this is how I imagined the Legion of the damned to be biggrin.png some of the GW figure just leave me wanting more ghostly poses/Flames

I always thought the GW models looked a bit gaudy, too many skulls ruin a model in my view.

*stolen*

really cool brother!

Go for it!

Your legion of the damned are off to a fantastic start, though I think they might need a bit more flames!

I'm hoping the paint job reduces the need for flames everywhere, although the second bolter dude will be wreathed in a halo of flames as if he's just stepped onto the field of battle.

I hate you because I wanted to do that. I love you because now I don't have to.

Go ahead and do it brother! The more the merrier!

Revenants =D

Totally man, intergalactic magic zombie ghosts!

Your LoTD idea is awesome!  Love the flames emanating from the melta muzzle and the fatal wounds.

Thanks dude, the fatal wounds will show up much better once I've painted them. 2 of them have wounds that go the whole way through them.

So, today I kitbashed the 4th Legionary and gave him the damned treatment. He's got triple bolt round wounds which annihilated his primary and secondary hearts. The way I did the flames was to try to convey him having just arrived via ghost-teleport. I also got my phone back so no having to rely on crappy camera!

The flames on the shoulder pad have been feathered slightly since I took these photos to give it more of a flame appearance as I felt it was too flat.

Paints and the sergeant has been ordered today, so hopefully within the week I'll be able to have the full 5 man squad assembled and I can crack on with their paint scheme!

For any one who is interested I've gone for Melta, Multimelta, Combi-Melta and a Powerfist for all the 3++ deep striking ignores cover anti tank goodness.

I can't decide if I want melta or plasma.... It's a toss up either way.

I'll be eventually doing another squad full of plasma. Either is pretty much the best load out you can stick on them.

So, I managed to bash together the sergeant, add a few more flames to some of the other bods and I declare them ready for the painting block!

So we've got three head shots and two massive center mass damage, grim enough I think for warp-ghosts.

Cheers,

Like the Sgt, So that is a FW combi-weapon .

Yep, pretty damn spiffy.

Wow is that a new forgeworld seeker combi weapon? It is!! Oh I like how boxy it is! Looking forward to seeing paint on these guys, are you going traditional lotd paint scheme or something different?

That it is, it's a lovely bit of kit. I'm going to be doing my Malevolent paint scheme on them, but the wounds, weapon muzzles and flames will be ethereal purple warp energy.

Did someone mention bikes...?

I approve wholeheartedly of the mounted contingent of your force, dude ;) More pressingly, though, these Legionnaires look AWESOME! I am really excited to see how they, and especially the flames, turn out. I've been wanting to build my own for a while, and I've gotta say I'm kicking myself for not thinking to use Heresy/Pre-Heresy era armour, it really is such a good idea especially if you're representing the revenants of Marines past.

Can't wait to see how they come out. Keep it up mate

Why aren't these painted yet? I want to see what they look like, what you've described above sounds very interesting. It's certainly the most unique take on LOTD I've ever heard or seen. Cool use of bits, too. At the very least your guys will look different to anyone elses.

Well, ask and ye shall receive! I'm not happy with the purple, I wanted it to pop a bit more but with the palette I have, that's impossible. I'm not too sure if the idea conveys well though, what do you think?

Someone did say bikes! I hope to have two full squads of bikes eventually all packing Grav guns for anti-everything. Onto the Legionnaires, the Sergeant is done. I'm not overly impressed as I don't feel I've quite met my grand image of ethereal revenants striding the field of battle to seek revenge upon the foes that slew them but I can't really do much else to them. He meets every bullet point I wanted. What do you reckon?

The Legion of the Damned is what robed figures call them in hushed tones in the darkness of rune protected chambers. The Restless Dead are what the enlightened with the Marines Malevolent have labeled them. For these tortured souls, the work laid down to them by the Emperor himself did not end in their death, it is this powerful and absolute belief that interfered with what passes for a Space Marines soul and shackled them to the very thing that the chapter was founded upon. Purity. They are pure anger, pure hatred, they are drawn through the veil between worlds to dispense righteous justice where it is deemed most needed. When the Chapter engages an enemy of the most heinous caliber, they come. When the Marines are surrounded by corruption on all sides, when their mission will go unfulfilled, they come. Without a word they stride forth from the clamour of battle, appearing in flashes of incandescence. Shimmering purple flames shroud their bodies, drifting off to scorch the earth, constantly reforming upon their person. They move with a mechanical gait and their armour glows from within, as though their suit is powered by something other than the bodies that should reside within. They hold no regard to anything but the utter destruction of their perceived foe and it has been documented before that even living members of their own Chapter have been caught in their punishing cross fire. Their weapons belch writhing purple flames that emit the sounds of screaming souls, impacting upon their enemy in shocks of warp born lightning, scoring their way through even the thickest armour plating. Nothing is safe from their withering touch and only the most determined of assaults can force them back into the ether from whence they came.

Veteran-Prefect Atilius has been counted among The Restless Dead since the 599th year of M32, where he fell during Abaddon the Despoiler's 2nd Black Crusade into the Cadian Gate. The recently formed chapter of Space Marines known as the Marines Malevolent committed the entirety of the 2nd and 3rd companies into the defence of the mega-fortress constructed on Nemesis Tessera. During this assault, elements of the 3rd company came into contact with the spearhead of Abaddon's forces* and it is here Atilius fell. A savage push at a weak point upon the walls turned into a forlorn hope as a furious counter charge from the Marines Malevolent stunted the Traitors hammer blow, turning it into a rolling brawl of power armoured fury. Veteran-Prefect Atilius destroyed the enemy before him, smashing a path towards the arch-enemy when he was challenged to a duel by one of Abaddon's chosen. Jaded bitterness met psycho-indoctrinated hatred as power axe met glove and in a staggering blow for blow the fight ended, the Chosen, in a desperate gambit to win the battle placed the muzzle of his bolt pistol to curvature of Atilius helm and pulled the trigger. The injection of adrenaline and shock suppressors allowed the stricken Prefect a few more moments of life in which to do the Emperors work. In those moments, his power glove snapped shut around the enemies enclosed head and with a whir of pistons clenched until a wash of red squeezed between the mechanical digits. This is how Atilius died. His unique identification code was committed to the Chapters archives as no trace of his remains could be found once the 5 year long siege had been rolled back. Thousands of years later during a special operations mission under taken by a veteran task force to eliminate a resurgence of Iron Warrior traitor marines that a sixth indent-bead linked into the 5 man squad feed, followed shortly by four more. All that came from these new additions to the previously secure channel was the constant grain of static and something that barely registered upon the senses, conveying the sense of something sinister. The members of the task force underwent extensive interrogation by the Puritan Order and it was documented that the identification codes logged were of brothers pronounced missing presumed dead. Ever since the Puritan Order are on the ever vigilant watch for signs of their lost brethren.

So there we have the explanation of my take on the Legion of the Damned, let me know if I've managed to portray Atilius in miniature form.

*I can hear A-D-B frowning from here as I murder his brain-child.
