Thanks for doing up the battle report. I'm going to loot it for my blog.
To be very honest I don't like using Special characters at all.  I had no emotional investment in Ghaz V Corax from a game play point of view with this new spin on Corax giving an additional -1 every turn. You put him with a squad he will die. those wounds just keep rolling through. (As we saw.) And for anyone who hasn't had the pleasure of suddenly needing 5's to hit. Well, your in for a real treat..........  Yuck.
I had a lot of fun I think I should have paid more attention before deployment...and for that matter when setting up my three objectives...
But hind sight is 20/20. I had a blast it was fun to throw so many dice.
If I were going to make any list changes they be.
I didn't need 3 dakka Jets two aircraft would have been fine.
I would have liked 5 or 10 more lootas or maybe another Mek gun.
30 Storm boys was silly I would have done better with 3 mobs of 10 not and bunched together.
My Deff Dread needed to keep assaulting Infantry and another one of those would have been fantastic.
More Kill Saw MANZ, More Gretchen, More Slugga boys, although where the points would have come from is anybody's guess.
And some better way to deal with your Thudd Guns. They were the Kings of the battle field.
I think you'd have tabled my Orks in another turn or two.
Thanks for the game!

Edit.

I thought I'd add a rough list of my forces from the game.

8 mobs of Slugga boys 30 strong 240 models

1 mob of grot 31 models

3 mobs of shoota boys 20 models
Mega mobs 2 mobs of 3 6 models

tank bustas 5 models

lootas 3 mobs of 5 15 models

Mek gun 1 model

Storm boys 30 models

Deff Dread one model

Dakka jets 3 models

Blastjet 1 model

weirdboys 2 models

Warboss 1 model

Big mek 1 model

Ghazghkull 1 model
Looks like 368 models.

WLK and I don't get to play each other very often so we planned a big epic battle. In the spirit of big epic battle I brought the above.
Over all it's a simple army to play. Everything is straight forward to use so I don't have to spend a lot of time deciding what to do. Just move run charge or shoot. Which saves a little time, although it did seem to me that my turns took a long time.
Looking back at the game I can see now where I didn't use several of my units very well. That lone Mega nob for example could have skulked about in the building for a turn and waited for a better target. He would have put a solid hurting on a tactical squad or done damage had he assault, been in position to assault, dark furies. Where he could have tanked a few lightning claw wounds and maybe killed 3 or 4 furies. Saving more Ork boys in the long run.
To be fair I think my mobs fighting the Leviathans were having a lazy day off. The nobs being far too uninterested in the fight going on to be bothered to land more than one hit and couldn't bother to even scratch the Leviathans paint at best.
Corax falling did surprise me. But he and his unit were subjected to 100 attacks. which I thing ended in 28 wounds to  save. WLK's terminators had been easily saving nearly as many wounds through out all of their combats so I didn't expect much to happen to Corax.
My only silly regret was in forgetting my Shock Attack gun Bigmek. I had been looking forward to using that.

Hey all,

got in a 4.5k game this Saturday against my arch-foe, Rayray.

Maelstrom Mission 3

I brought the Vlka Fenryka, meaning a generic Legion list with Sutbborn.

-Wolf Lord in Cataphractii armor with 10 Cataphractii Terminators in a Spartan

-Librarian with 10 Cataphractii Terminators in a Spartan

-1x10 Veteran Squad in a Rhino

-1x10 Breacher Marines in a Land Raider Phobos

-1x1 Contemptor Dreadnought in a Drop Pod

-1x1 Leviathan Dreadnought in a Drop Pod

-1x1 Whirlwind Scorpius

-1x2 Predator Squadron, both with Exterminator Plasma Cannons, both with Machine Spirit, 1 Command Tank

1x1 Typhon

I won the roll to go first, opt to allow Rayray to go first.

Overlook of the table

The deployment of my Vlka Fenryka. The hardiest tanks deploy in the front, while the Veterans deploy in a tall building so their Nuncio-vox can spot for the Scorpius

the Word Bearer deployment...check Belakor hiding behind the Spartan

What the Vlka Fenryka see

What the Word Bearers see

I missed most of RR's Turn 1, as he mostly advanced his army as fast as possible

My Contemptor lands deep behind the Word Bearers

My turn has the Word Bearer Spartan and Sicarian Venator being destroyed, while the Plasma Predators unload on the Chaos Cataphractii

Most of my armor actually moves deeper in my deployment zone

while my Preds and Rhino advance to screen the heavier tanks from the mass of chain fists and thunder hammers of the Chaos Catapractii

End of Turn 1

Turn 2

The Warp surges and a Soul Grinder is vomited behind my army

While the Gal Vorbak appears from the Warp as well

A Word Bearer Tactical Squad emerges to confront the Predators

an eagle eye view of the table

in the Psychic phase, a pack of Pink Horrors is summoned

The combi-melta gets up close and personal, and destroys the Predator tank

the three Contemptors advance towards my Spartan

10 Tactical Marines with Melta guns pile out infront of my Typhon, stripping it of 3 hull points

The power fist of the Contemptor does 2 hull points of damage to my Spartan, with glances

The Wolf Breachers move to confront the Soul Grinder

The Typhon opens fire on the Gal Vorbak, sending 6 back to the hells they emerged from

My Praetor and Contemptors come out of their Spartan to challenge Belakor, who was grounded by my fire last turn

The Wolves continual to back up and Tormund's Spartan moves to protect the wounded Typhon

Everybody was kung fu fighting!

the Wolves are as fast as lightning

infact, it was a little bit frightening

two Wolves fall but their melta bombs destroy the Soul Grinder

Belakor and the Cataphractii Sergeant fight in a Challenge

which ends with the Sergeant and two Cataphractii die to Belakor's blade. The squad stays locked in combat

Turn 3

A large pack of Plague Bearer comes from the Warp

The Pink Horrors and Cataphractii advance while the 2 man Melta support squad rallies

A Word Bearer Contemptor moves to protect the rear armor of it's talon partner

who's aiming down field to destroy my Drop Pod

The damaged Spartan backs up while the Typhon continues to move back deeper in my zone

My Leviathan lands in my Deployment zone to slow down the Word Bearer advance

The Typhon moves into the building for protection while the Scorpius retreats fast

my Praetor, who shrugged off all of Belakor's attacks in the previous round (RR's half of turn 3), falls to the monster

Turns 4/5

Belakor continues chopping through Cataphractii

The Contemptor and last of the Gal Vorbak charge the wounded Spartan

the Tactical Squad moves to hunt down my retreating Typhon

the Wolf Veterans move to bail out the Typhon while the undamaged Spartan moves to block the Chaos Contemptor

the middle of the table

Belakor continues to kill the Cataphractii

my deployment zone...I've actually retreated farther than I've advanced

the Summoned Herald charges the Scorpius

the Plague Bearers and Horrors charge the Drop Pod where the Leviathan sits, blow it up, and destroy the Leviathan as the Dread has nowhere to legally deploy

Moments later, the Typhon shells the bunched up daemons, killing nearly all the Horrors and Plaguebearers

End of the game, my Contemptor has killed the last of the Volkite Heavy Support Squad, the artillery but failed to penetrate the rear armor of the Cataphractii

the final score the game. a close win for the Vlka Fenryka (if the d3 rolls were better for RR he could have taken the game)

My note sheet. the damaged Spartan survives with a single hull point, the Typhon lives with 2. Kjaran, the Contemptor, both Predators are all destroyed

Notes from the game:

-I hate Belakor. The Invisibilty power combined with his Daemon profile and Blade make him a stupidly annoying model. I lost my cool fighting him, which RR was very gracious with. I cannot state just how much I hate him

-I deployed too aggressively, and RR moved towards me much faster than I believed. I need more practice using so much armor.

Oh well, its late and Im tired. All for now.

Close Game.

Heavy Armor is a bit unwieldy on the table especially against lists with so many melee threats.

Really love the conversion of the Typhon you have Jarl it is very beautiful.

I have had a lot of success with hard corner castles , losing the Leviathan in the manner in which you did really sucks.

That demon prince is  a scumbag D:  i hate him too  It is certainly the mark of your friendship and combined sportsmanship that you didint get into a Row over him.

Ray Ray's list certainly was very scary im curious to hear his thoughts on the game.

Thank you both for the battle report  It was a very fun read.

Close Game.

It really was. I thought my beginning was solid, and possibly overwhelming for RR. He took the first turn and shoved meltas and fists in my face so much I had the Wolves falling back every turn. It was weird.

Heavy Armor is a bit unwieldy on the table especially against lists with so many melee threats.

My 40k Wolves rocked alot of Rhinos and Pred tanks, but never too many Land Raiders. I was sloppy with their use and need more time to get proficient with them. Most of the time I was banking on their high armor and wishing bad luck to Ray's dice to keep them alive, not any skill on my part.

Really love the conversion of the Typhon you have Jarl it is very beautiful.

All credit goes to RR. He did all the work. I simply bribed him with pizza and beer.

I have had a lot of success with hard corner castles , losing the Leviathan in the manner in which you did really sucks.

I'm familiar with the practice as I played my WHFB Dwarves in the same manner. I figured the armor would make a glorious charge across the table, but instead had to disgracefully retreat and use them as armored bunkers.

That demon prince is  a scumbag D:  i hate him too  It is certainly the mark of your friendship and combined sportsmanship that you didint get into a Row over him.

I firmly agree, and exhibited a less then stellar attitude over him being so freaking powerful. I'm embarrassed with how pissy I got, but RR is too good of a person to let my poor attitude last for long. We were laughing soon enough. He did say he wont bring him outside of Apocalypse games.

Ray Ray's list certainly was very scary im curious to hear his thoughts on the game.

So am I. With a little time to separate from the game he should have some interesting views.

Thank you both for the battle report  It was a very fun read.

You're very welcome. Im happy somebody is reading and replying to this craziness

Please dont play Dark Angels. I have too much respect for you!

Yeah, no dark Angels. In hindsight, I hadn't realized how powerful belakor could be with such a dominating presence. I figured he would match the typhon in power and board presence, not literally be a self-playing powerhouse. I really enjoyed the game, as my mistake of thinking the typhon had a minimum range influenced the decision to say "screw it" and surge foreward into wlk's armies teeth. The game and day was a much needed oasis during a brutal week.

I'm also looking in land raider variant to bring more shooting to the list.

I'm torn on the Achilles pattern land raiders

I'm digging the thought of an Achilles alpha..Choooom! Chooom! Chooom! ..My boys on the other had roll their collective 772 eyes at the thought. too much Chooom! they cry!

I'm back and forth on variants

My 40k Wolves have land raiders that they never use. My 30k Vlka Fenryka could them, just not the flamestorm cannons they use.

Since I'd have to rearm them, I'm looking at the various kits available to land raiders

Fair enough. But I know a guy who does killer conversions who you might talk to .... Oh, wait you know him too. I was think, just now maybe you could get the extra parts and set it all up to swap weapons. So you didn't have to buy whole new Land raiders. I know I've seen Achilles parts on Ebay, but not parts for the alpha. Just a thought.

I would say Achilles Alpha.

30K doesn't allow for the Helios, Redeemer Crusader or Prometheus (quad heavy bolter command tank)

Atleast the Alpha, loaded with Volkite and a quad mortar (shatter shells?) would help against massed infantry. Magnetise the sponsons and you can swap for melta when the mood takes you.

Can you take the Achilles Alpha as a dedicated transport to keep the heavy slots free?

Could always pretend the flamestorms are multimelta's ;) That assault cannon is just a rapid firing quad launcher :D

The way RR had you on the back foot, I really thought he was going to win this one.

Oh and the Typhon looks sweet.

I know I don't play nearly as much as I used to but it's like WLK has become a master of maneuver on the table. Than makes these games so much fun to read and play. Looking forward to my next opportunity to play you again too...Rayray...  It'll only be our third game in...three going on four years. ha. you'd best get ready... I have several hundred drooling monsters looking for a fight., I mean a good fight!
I actually feel a little bad, I don't have a good picture of Rayray's play style compared to WLK's.

Yeah, no dark Angels. .

!!! D:  Oh So its like that huh ! I guess ill just leave my loyalties  completely in the dark and just fite everyone !

My torch bearing zealots await the green machine. Nothing but love.....and maybe shells.

Ullanor Campaign boys?

Naaa. Nothing so grand as that. My lot just turn up. But, that's just how it goes when you follow a furious path directly to godhood!

A whole new spin on "I think there for I am." haha.  "I am there for you is!"

Truthfully It makes for some very fun games and who knows maybe one day I'll even win one of them.

@Uberwolve: Thanks man!

@Dantay: Im leaning towards the Achilles Alpha, but the transport capacity of 6 bothers me.

Nobody in the Legion list gets them as Dedicated Transports as far as Im aware.

RR came really close this game. If I didnt get 3 points from Kingslayer, or RR roll higher on his two D3 rolls the game would have ended in a tie or loss for me.

Congratulate RR. He had the gun and did the conversion for me.

@Uberwolve x2: "master of maneuver"? Thanks for blowing smoke up my skirt.

I tell RR this often, but nearly everything I do on the table is completely made on the fly. I dont put any real thought into my moves. Half the time its just stupid :cuss paying off.

@Bladewolf: I'd rather you stick with the kids who hid behind the Wall rather than those that trucked with daemon engines, heretical empires and "team killing lolz".

Ullanor would be a blast, but I pity the fool that deploys across from RR and I.

Thanks for reading everybody!

WLK

your vehement disagreement is only spurring my interest even more Jarl

but more on topic , I really would like to see you Ray Ray  and Uber mix it up even if it is a 2v1 orks v legion marines set up or even a Orks Showing up on a planet where the Raven Guard are fighting the  Word Bearers and deciding OH LOOK A FITE !!

scoring would be a little odd id imagine but It would be glorious to behold
