[DW] Blackthorn and Swordhand: OOC Thread

Hi Morovir,

The choice of an Obsidian Glaive is a pretty inspired one - they've got a surprising amount of background for a Chapter that was created simply to be destroyed. I think they could be a great Chapter for you to work from.

At the moment, this is what it looks like we have:

++Kill-Team Vaidan - Codified "BLACKTHORN"++

Watch-Sergeant Khyber Vaidan - Novamarines (Ultramarine) - Tactical Marine

Brother Greysight - Storm Sons (White Scars) - Tactical Marine

Brother Tyber - Dragons of Caliban (Dark Angels) - Assault Marine

Brother Vârvost - Eradicators (Blood Angels) - Assault Marine

Brother Atratus - Raptors (Raven Guard) - Assault Marine

Brother Daon Akkad - Astral Claws (Unknown) - Devastator

Brother Nycax Sabaan - Iron Hands - Techmarine

Brother Solastion Albikus - Crimson Knights (Blood Angels) - Apothecary / Sanguinary Priest

++Kill-Team XXXXX - Codified "SWORDHAND"++

Epistolary Guillermo Montesa - Crimson Fists (Imperial Fists) - Librarian

Brother Rodrik Ghent - Invaders (Imperial Fists) - Tactical Marine

Brother Aodhan - Emperor's Spears (Ultramarines) - Tactical Marine

Brother Brakan Vorr - Red Talons (Iron Hands) - Devastator

Brother XXXXX - Obsidian Glaives (Ultramarines) - Techmarine

Brother XXXXX - XXXXX (XXXXX) - Apothecary

At the moment, we will stand at:

- 1 Librarian

- 4 Tacticals

- 3 Assault

- 2 Devastator

- 2 Apothecary

- 2 Techmarine

I still believe that any character slot can be open (other than the Librarian) - as Mazer has said, Tacticals are the bedrock of the team, but there surely could be more Assault, or Devastator. Given that the Kill-Team is likely to be split up, rather than operating as one blob all the time, that does suggest that an apothecary or a techmarine could be a good character, potentially.

Reyner:

- To clarify:

Red Talon Marines will start with +5 WS, Forbidden Lore (Traitor Legions) and Hatred (Chaos Space Marines)

As per Index Xenomortis:

- Generate your statistics

- Choose your starting skill based on your specialism

- Generate your Past History and Power Armour

- Movement, Wounds and Fate

- Divination

Ignore your Chapter Trapping for now.

- Have a look at the Deeds to see if there is one that appeals to you.

You may take advances from the General/Deathwatch tables (as in IX), the Devastator tables (as in the core rulebook), or the Codex Chapters table below:

Awareness (200)

Awareness +10 (400)

Well MR, my thoughts on class distribution is, we've got it pretty solid. If I could influence anything, I'd feel better backed up with a second Apothecary or Techmarine, also a Librarian could be useful for psychic defense as well as lore checks.

But in the end, what I'd want most from everyone, is to be happy and having fun with their characters and like their concepts post creation. :smile.:

Couldn't agree more!

And Akkad is healed! Updooted.

:D

Can't go wrong adding another Apothecary :)

Having just returned to consciousness after going through work from Saturday morning to midday here with 20 minutes of sleep, I could not agree more - Do send any you can spare my way. Also gladly be taking any med--servitors you can offer, Mazer :p

So just chiming in to say I enjoy keeping up with the story and you guys in between and really sad this year's work is already shaping up to look as ducky as last year. Glad to be onboard here, so I can get my head away from that in between. Even if I can not up with the frequency of your post, sadly :(

The new Brothers look very interesting already - really cool stuff developing there!

I am going with Signature Weapon and Mighty Shot - doesn't seem like a lot for 1000xp but I can start with a missile launcher and I guess some missiles come with it? :biggrin.:

Correct good frater

Back on the plot development - it is perhaps a good idea to ask where all the corpses get dumped in the factory district?  Maybe some kind of MegaCity One recycling plant?

Does the Fabrica district have one of those?  Maybe Sabaan could ask the Mechanicum lads?

For those who havent / normally wouldnt see this, this, to me, is a pretty good visualization of our kill-team mowing through cultists and tyranids alike: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CMGRa4_UjE4

The multilaser was also pretty much spot on to how I saw the Chimeras Turret Multilaser working.

@Morovir some of our players use Orokos or another dice roller, bur some like me use real dice, rolling them on my desk/table elsewhere in good faith with Mol.

I jam quite a lot, so Orokos may be better ;p

@ Slips, wow - the way those Marines move is VERY realistic, no I'm not joking, the roll of the shoulders etc, very impressive.

Morovir - dice tend to be done on an honesty system. There are times I roll for players - Nineswords tends to prefer it, there have been times I've rolled for Xin and Reyner as they haven't had the time to do so. A.T., Slips and Steel Company often use Orokos. To date, I've never had an issue with players being suspiciously successful.

Your Obsidian Glaives Techmarine sounds like an interesting character - the hardships of his homeworld and then the trials of his apprenticeship to Mars!

Hey all, looking to get involved – would have loved to have been last year, but was snowed under. The good side of that is that I've had a while for ideas to churn and foment; and I'd love to get a chance to join with a Marine from a rather dilapidated Chapter. The Chapter only submits members to the Deathwatch under duress, and only Apothecaries are sent. There's a reason behind it; but not sure how much info is appropriate to share here – or whether it should come up during the 'in-character' playing?

I've not got a great deal of experience of roleplaying, but love the concept of a shared story.

I guess this post is really just to introduce myself (hello!), and to ask where I begin with the mechanics of converting the character I have in mind into a playable one.

I'll probably use Orokos then - I'll get my initial rolls done tomorrow.

I think that the techpriests would probably be quite hostile to the Obsidian Glaives, given that their Dreadnoughts suffer irrevocable degeneration as a result of their homeworld, though, then again, having their Heresy-era founder in a Dreadnought may be a good thing in their relations.

Animation is really impressive Slips ! Thanks for sharing.

I agree that the movement is very good, both fluid enough to be lifelike while still conveying a sense of bulk and mass. Sound effects are good, too.

Could someone please just put a quote up regarding the Astropath's vision in this thread for the tired and the lazy...or just to ease the planning and discussion, pretty please?

Edit: wow, already updated while I was AFK.

Read up on the Glaives. - getting a positively Rogue Trader feel there! Very nice ( or rather, not so much :p. )

Also, welcome to Apologist! Been following your work for some time, it's quite stunning in Miniatures and Writing both. Really itching to see your work here!

Here you go Xin:

Vaidan, Solastion and Tyber:

The Astropath nods at the Sanguinary Priest's words.

"I can see little with the veil closing in on us, but I felt its presence, the thing you search for. I heard the screams of the dying and the roar of machinery. It dwells in the dark and cold, making its lair amongst corpses and bones, and it hungers. It burns with a curiosity, a desire to know more of you."

Thanks Reyner.

- Morovir / Apologist / Sun Reaver - if you can send me an email address I can send you the Index Xenomortis and the link to your character sheet.

- Apologist: Interesting concepts...! Feel free to PM me with any information you might not want the other characters to have yet! I'm pleased with the possibility of you exploring an Apothecary character!

- Steel / Morovir - Perhaps +5T / +5WP ?

- Mazer - Interesting idea, worthwhile getting into the IC thread so I can respond.

Welcome to halls of the Scourge of the Alien, Artisan and Wordwright. :)

It's interesting, I was leafing through the DW books, as I do often of an evening and came across a Dark Angels Successor called the Angels of Vengeance.  I mention this because they only send Marines to Stand a Vigil when it suits them and as such, the Deathwatch is a touch distrustful of them.  In game this translates to penalties when you're trying to be convincing or nice, to reflect the attitude your Marine both brings and fosters, so really the conversion of your concept into game terms is possible and not too difficult.

Don't give too much of your laddo's motivation away, I want to see how it develops for the big reveal - but tell us some more about your ideas - how do you see the character of your marine or the chapter?  Where are they based?  What kind of enemies do they fight?  Do they have a style of warfare they prefer?  Do they know their progenitor?  The Chapter only sends Apothecaries and only on sufferance - whilst the Deathwatch turn down no-one (except a couple of rare occasions) why would the Deathwatch want him?

As to roleplaying, don't let it daunt you.  I am a GM and have GM'ed a good few campaigns, both Deathwatch and Black Crusade but I've never played in any but this one.  I found it easiest to use a lot of things I built up over the years from stories I'd written or characters I liked from films.  The game itself is crunch heavy, but we can help you handle that no worries.  The story is king, as well as beating up a few degenerates, so you're in the right place :)

I know that's a huge info dump but please, fire away with any queries - the gang in here is really sound.

I'll probably use Orokos then - I'll get my initial rolls done tomorrow.

I think veneration of the ancients would be like anything to do with Mars - some will hail you, some will spit on you, perhaps that is just, seeing what your character has done (or not) so you live in the twilight - despised by the flesh and deplored by the machine.  You horrible sinner.

I spotted a Primarch's Curse maybe, it's the one for the Angels of Absolution - instead of suffering more and more paranoia, when you get crazy enough you take a Willpower test, if you fail it, your faith in yourself crumbles and you take corruption points instead...and corruption must be purged... I thought that might be of some interest since it could reflect the introspections on how terrible the things you did in the past were, but they were behind you, since then you have atoned...haven't you?  Haven't you? :whistling:

Thoughts everyone?

@ Mol, will get something up shortly.
