    Jagieŀŀo inspects their prizes

    By GSCUprising

The Resistance have finally captured the war machines they believe they require to make their stand.   Brutus, the Malcador, reliable, dependable the spine of their battleline. She will not fail them. She will hold the line, her battlecannon roaring, her sponsons blazing as she paves the way for the Resistance's advance. Wrapping Wreckas

    By zulu.tango

Hit the throttle on the Wreckas last week. I've been painting pretty slowly this year all things considered, decided to change that with this project. Finished up free-hand on a few items, got the squigs painted up, did the bases and oil washes last week resulting in a final project I'm pretty happy with!    I dug out some of the leftover terrain bits I had from the sector imperialis/Chalnath terrain. I put a fine terrain paste around those bits and then put in some sand to act as larg

    XIVth Legion build

    By W.A.Rorie

So am I back from Indiana. I have to head back to move In-Laws into a Retirement Center, in a few weeks. And of course everything goes sideways at work moment I get back. So hobby time has been non existence. Silver Lining is LGS not get Saturnine until Monday, so I can get everything I need to do first i.e. my XIXth Legion and Exorcists  Call to Arms Vows, that I have not started. And won't have time this weekend.   I did start on building one of My XIVth Legion Commanders, not sure w

    Square Pants Bob

    By Bouargh

Hi Folks,   Today’s blog entry is a little bit specific as it deals with something different from my usual inputs: instead of reporting hobbying progress, I will talk about a trail I did for a new technique (à la TITH – i.e. something that is not new in general but new for me).     The technique is often reported on purpose of adding details and create battle damages or war-torn marks on miniatures. But beyond painting damages, the sponge might be used on purpose of

Celestian Insidiant + Chapter Master

I've finished one of my Celestian Insidiants for your viewing pleasure.    I'm happy with the way it's come out in the end. The purple inner lining of the cloth gives a bit of contrast to the brighter colours of the rest of the model. the only thing I'm not sure about is the eyes... The red is blending in with the Fleur de Lys on the helmet, and I'm considering changing the lense colour. Not sure to what though: A quick mock up with green and blue below. (yellow would be swamped

Skull Brethren Part 2: Rogues Gallery

So again, I love me some characters and my World Eaters have had quite a  few over the years. Since 3rd edition my army has gone through many lords, champions and supporting fellows. There's also too many to count and recall. So I have all of my current heroes (or should I say villains) Ah, the true OG. Khârn the Betrayer. I did have the old school 2nd edition Khârn back in the day. That model was the first model I had "commissioned" when a friend of my mine painted it for me as a birt

Well I have multiple Inquisitors and guess I have Cabal or a Conclave for my Gaming Groups Upcoming Campaign. So I need to put them in their Ordos Majoris and Minoris   Inquisitor Lord- Count as Coteaz   The Ordo Malleus (The Threat Beyond) - Destroys daemonic threats and investigates the nature of the Daemon:   Puritan Ordo Malleus   Radical Ordo Malleus   The Ordo Xenos (The Threat Without) - Investigates and eliminates alien inf

The Tomb World Awakens

Kill-Zone Tomb World is an updated version of last edition's Gallowdark terrain set. With the addition of scatter terrain, teleporter pads, and breachable walls the "close quarters combat" kill zone is a vast improvement to its predecessor's rule-set. However I love the look of the Gallowdark terrain and was in no great rush to paint another large batch of terrain so it sat unpainted under my desk for the last 5 months. With the completion of my Wolf Scouts I was looking for another project and

Kill Team updates: Scorpion & Sisters

An update to two of my Kill Teams, my main Blades of Khaine, and starting my Celestian Insidiants.  First off, I've mostly finished my Scorpion Exarch with Claw/Chainsword, which is pretty standard colourwise, and I doubt I'll be doing anything different with the Dire Avengers and Banshees.        Second, I have started blocking in the colours for the Sisters, with teal cloth and white armour. Once the darker colours get blocked in, it'll get a bit more contrast

Skull Brethren Part 1: The Ship of Theseus

Hello followers of the Dark Gods! I have been a World Eaters Player since, I want to say 1998., so almost 30 years. Over the years I have bought, sold and traded for models. My warband has gone through many name changes, The Blood Vultures (When my warband used an ungodly amount of raptors) The Crimson Butchers (When my warband was a Chaos Soup army, with daemons and Traitor Guard units) and now we have settle on The Skull Brethren for 9th, 10th and probably 11th edition. The army has ballooned

Thinning paint to a milk-like consistency.... my airbrush woes

The other day I primed my Adepta Sororitas Retributors with Army Painter Matt Black primer and a zenithal of Army Painter Matt White Primer.      Next day I went to paint them with Vallejo Model Colour Basalt grey. Got the bodies done and then airbrush stopped working.... Grab next airbrush nope spraying nothing, grab next one and it is doing nothing, and grab final one and it will not do anything either.  Great four airbrushes are down.   Dump paint into bucket. an

Loxodon Guard Part 7: Looking Ahead

So this is where the collection stands currently, It about 60 infantry and characters and 4 Dreadnoughts.  I think I got the Space Marine bug. They are super easy to build and paint. there a lot of character that you have give them also.    What's next for them? I do want another Apothecary, I might get a Redemptor Dreadnought and jazz him up for a "Titan Father". If GW makes a Venerable Redemptor Dreadnought I will hop on that one. I also have an idea for a Chapter Master, using a Pra

Loxodon Guard Part 6: Titan Brothers

So one of the guiding themes of the Loxodon Guard was that they respected Resilience and Experience. Which made me gravitate towards the Dreadnoughts. As being interred into a Dreadnought is kind of the ultimate expression of "Only in Death Does Duty End" motto. So I choose to feature Redemptor Dreadnoughts heavily in the army. The Loxodon Guard view the "Titan Brothers" in high esteem. Each echelon (aka company) is given 5 Primaris Dreadnoughts. The oldest dreadnought is referred to as the "Tit

Load plan – how I schedule my painting projects Part 2

Hi folks,   Last entry was about managing the almost daily/weekly organization of my painting backlog. It led me to comment about the dynamic underneath my approach of model stacking into the painting queues. Conclusion was that as far as I am concerned, I work better if I run multiple projects in parallel and if I feed the pipe in a revolving way. It is all about number, type and variety of color schemes. And it has impacts on my mood and assiduity.   But interestingly enoug

Load plan – how I schedule my painting projects

Hi folks,   I have recently spent some time dealing with a very serious issue: my painting yield has been reduced of about 50%. And I am not taking as a reference my productivity during lock-down. Rather the average production of mine for the past two years where, on average, I have managed sorting out one unit every 5 days. All game systems included. So, what happened?   Extra stuff to do beyond hobby? – not really. Or at least not in an amount that prevents me from get

Kill Team - V.I.P.E.R. Tempestus Aquilons

Obviously, I can't have only one Kill Team! That would just be silly... or two apparently, as I've also picked up the Celestian Insidiants as well!    First off, here's my test scheme for my Aquilons which I'm happy with so will go for this colour scheme!    I present to you V.I.P.E.R.! Vertical Insertion, Precision Execution & Reconnaissance  (I'm sure you can figure out the inspiration for these guys!)     I'm looking for a quick scheme rather

Loxodon Guard Part 5: Putting the Guard in Loxodon Guard

So when the release of the primaris line in 2017(?) I was on board unlike some people. I remember seeing the Horus Hersey 32mm MkIII models at my local gaming shop and saying "Man, these guys would look great for 40k". Was the release of the primaris the best way to go at the line refresh? Well hindsight is 20/20. It got me to start an army.    When I started the Loxodon Guard, one of the first purchases was the Deathwatch Combat Patrol box. I think I mostly wanted it for the Apothecar

Preamble

After a fair bit of lurking, list-reading, and quietly nodding along at other people’s excellent paint jobs, I figured it was time to start a hobby log of my own here on Bolter & Chainsword. This blog is mainly intended as a running record of my Warhammer journey: building, learning, painting, and occasionally questioning my life choices while staring at half-assembled sprues late at night. I’m relatively new to the hobby, coming at it as an adult with limited hobby time but a strong ap

Loxodon Guard Part 4: Covert Actors

I have a soft spot for snipers. When I recently brainstorm ideas for short stories 3 out of the 10 ideas I came up with had snipers feature in this as the main character. I also have soft spot of the assassins and all things Officio Assasinorum. I remember when the 3rd edition Codex: Assassins was released.  My brother and I pick up the both the Vindicare and Callidus assasins. Those models have long since sold off. But I did pick up the current Callidus assassin model  Gwenthar Mor,

Chapter Master Progress

Some progress on the ol' Chapter Master. As it's all a bit backwards, I've gotten the leather, bone, and parchment completed. Bronze/Gold is to be finished and I'm attempting a bit of free hand on the banner. I also really need to write down some of the background lore and details of the chapter itself at some point.

Loxodon Guard Part 3: Even More Characters

Yup I got even more characters for ya.  Soonrem “True Heart”  Thron, Apothecary for the 2nd Echelon. I accidentally broke off the hanging bit that usually in his left hand.  Drom “Sabretooth”Hel,  Master of Sanctity of the Loxodon Guard. I went with the execrator chaplain model for this guy. I'm not a fan of the current primaris chaplain model, this guy looks so much more dynamic. Also there's not a lot of Black Templar icons on him, so I think he fits nicely.

Chapter Master and start on Sternguard

Updates to my Chapter Master, and blocking in the colours for the Sternguard.  First off, CM: After a base of Vallejo glossy black all over (this is base for the chameleon paint), the gold/bronze trim has been picked out, along with the gubbins. I'll get these all painted up before doing the main armour colour, because correcting with black will be easier and less obvious than touching up chameleon paint! The cape is only stuck on with blu-tak. I've learned that lesson with other mo

Loxodon Guard Part 2: Concepts and Characters

Coming up with army lists and character concepts is one of the most enjoyable parts of this hobby for me. When I was working on my little kill team I went through a few ideas. First, I wanted to incorporate white into the colour scheme. Since my 3 other armies didn't have any white. So armies like Raven Guard and White Scars came to mind.   I ultimately chose a homebrew chapter because like most people who do homebrews, I didn't want to be tied down to a set of rules or fluff. Then I s

The Blackpelts - A Wolf Scouts Kill Team

With the dust settling on the holidays I finally had time to complete a project I've been working on for the last couple of months, and with that completion comes my first blog post in...a long time. Space Wolves have always been one of my favorite chapters, and when the wolf-scouts came out I was excited to paint up more sons of Russ. I wanted the "lore" behind this pack to be that they were Primaris marines that had drunk from the Cup of Wulfen and had begun to exhibit signs of the curse. T

Chapter Master, and a Kill Team

I have done a bit of minor kit bashing on Calgar to make my Chapter Master Glenn Mi'Kell (Kudos to anybody that gets that Scottish childhood reference!)   I don't like doing bare heads much, but as he's the Chapter Master, he needs an impressive beard!       Because he's a bit special I'll be using the Green Stuff World chameleon Cobalt Blue paint on his armour. Should hopefully look good!    Also, because I'm starting Kill Team at my games clu

Why didn't I think of this before?

Obviously it has been far too long since I first started this blog, and even longer since I first had this idea. I think I have finally decided on the forces for the chess set.   While modern chess sets often feature white versus black, fancier chess sets often feature sides of different colors, including browns and reds. This typically depended upon the materials being used for the pieces. For my part, I've long planned on a red versus black arrangement. My two dilemmas revolved aroun
