    Jagieŀŀo inspects their prizes

    By GSCUprising

The Resistance have finally captured the war machines they believe they require to make their stand.   Brutus, the Malcador, reliable, dependable the spine of their battleline. She will not fail them. She will hold the line, her battlecannon roaring, her sponsons blazing as she paves the way for the Resistance's advance. The Iron Duke, his twin Earthshaker cannons blasting holes in the enemy's fortifications. He guards those retreating and the wounded behind his massive blast shield

    Square Pants Bob

    By Bouargh

Hi Folks,   Today’s blog entry is a little bit specific as it deals with something different from my usual inputs: instead of reporting hobbying progress, I will talk about a trail I did for a new technique (à la TITH – i.e. something that is not new in general but new for me).     The technique is often reported on purpose of adding details and create battle damages or war-torn marks on miniatures. But beyond painting damages, the sponge might be used on purpose of

    XIVth Legion build

    By W.A.Rorie

So am I back from Indiana. I have to head back to move In-Laws into a Retirement Center, in a few weeks. And of course everything goes sideways at work moment I get back. So hobby time has been non existence. Silver Lining is LGS not get Saturnine until Monday, so I can get everything I need to do first i.e. my XIXth Legion and Exorcists  Call to Arms Vows, that I have not started. And won't have time this weekend.   I did start on building one of My XIVth Legion Commanders, not sure w

    Wrapping Wreckas

    By zulu.tango

Hit the throttle on the Wreckas last week. I've been painting pretty slowly this year all things considered, decided to change that with this project. Finished up free-hand on a few items, got the squigs painted up, did the bases and oil washes last week resulting in a final project I'm pretty happy with!    I dug out some of the leftover terrain bits I had from the sector imperialis/Chalnath terrain. I put a fine terrain paste around those bits and then put in some sand to act as larg

Zero bits challenge progress 2

As mentioned in some previous blog posts, I have been making slow progress on a self imposed challenge to get all of my bits spent through conversions, scratch built and other methods that can add additional miniatures to my army while spending all the spare stuff that I already have lying around. For a matter of simplicity, whenever I mention Converted in my graphs or tracking I am referring to conversions and scratch built miniatures or at least miniatures that were built beyond box numbers.

Why YOU should consider having a blog at the B&C…

The core of the Bolter & Chainsword is the discussion forums. After all, the B&C started as a discussion forum in the late 1990’s, back during the heady days of online discussion forums and the 3rd edition of the Warhammer 40,000 game. Over time, we have expanded the site’s capabilities to better support the needs of our members. Something we often lose sight of is the fact that Warhammer 40,000 is a hobby with various aspects. The most obvious of these are the painting of miniatures and

Hobby Creativity and The Bolter & Chainsword

One of the best aspects of the Warhammer 40,000 hobby is the ability for hobbyists to make the game their own. While Games Workshop and its subsidiaries produce diverse products that appeal to a wide range of tastes, the setting itself allows for even more diversity. For example, the galaxy-spanning Imperium of Man has numerous sub-factions that range from the "little people" represented by hive gangs (Necromunda) and planetary defense forces (the Astra Militarum in the Warhammer 40,000 game) to

Could EPIC really return? Memories of tiny minis and hoping for more.

Could we really see the return of EPIC in the near future? That is the question we are asking in today's blog entry.   With Titanicus almost done (see below), Aeronautica definitely done in terms of new releases, and The Old World already planned as separate project, is there room in the specialist game area for Epic? I believe there is, and I honestly think its going to be hinted at very soon, maybe at Warhammer Fest which at the time of writing this blog entry, is only Two days away.

The 369th Grand Battalion working lore

While work on painting continues a pace I've cast my mind to write some fluff for my grand battalion   *Ahem*   The 369th Grand Battalion is an amalgamation of the 36th Infantry battalion and the 9th Armoured following the heavy losses they sustained following Istvaan.     The 36th operated under the command of Warsmith Justinian a terran veteran who upon the fields of Istvaan hesitated to give the command to fire on the loyalists. The Warsmith Justinian would

Deathleaper/lictor Conversion Fin

so i finally finished my lictor conversion from a gsc patriarch and left over trygon talons. pretty straight forward one but effective and considering weve still no plastic lictors this is a nice alternative and a nice difference to my other lictors and the feeder tendrils are straightforward and rather addictive to add.. now i really need to finish my diama and then do a similar post on that...

Battle Report: HH Alpha Legion vs Custodes

In the run up to WHFest I managed to get another game in, this time against Adeptus Custodes. They're a really tough fight in 40k, and I had no idea what they would be like in HH.    War of Lies, triangles deployment pointing at one another. This game I ditched the preds, despite how much I love them, to run a Leviathan in a HH Leviathal. I also swapped the Deredeo and something else for a Delgatus with nemesis and 3 sky hunters with MM's and a fist.    Custodian Army Cu

40k Team Tournament Recap

Ok, finally closing out the Adepticon 2023 catch-up   Game 1. Win v. Wolves I thought they had us in the early turns. It was clear they cross a lot of table quickly. Should we leave the sentinels forward and give the enemy the extra move, or just pull them out? I think it'd be helpful to pause on decisions and go through outcomes in practice games. here my thinking was that I wanted early pressure on the objectives. I also wanted to divert them to get some shooting in where

My absolute refusals to build anything else rhino related

G'day   In my continued quest to build literally anything that's not rhino based I've finished off assembling my final 10 man tac squad with bayonets.   Along with this I've built my first of three land speeders and oh boy howdy do I hate the pilots arms.     I want to say that I'm more than halfway to get my current list variation built but I'm conscious of the fact I still need to build 3 vindicators and 4 rhinos  (Boooo hiss!)   Anyway ta ga

Rogue Trader Tourney Recap

Game 1 Loss to Sisters with a Knight Great opponent coming into this with no recent games. A good learning game to start the day and get on my feet. That said it was a total rout. With more time he'd have wiped me off the board. At the outset terrain placement is a big problem. Thank the emperor I didn't bring a baneblade. Movement was hugely constricted. Obscuring created weird avenues of sight.  Challenge. Learning when to reserve is a key weakness for me. I continue to have a bad m

Magnetized Bases, Trench Reference - Muddy fun

Magnetizing Carry Cases.  During transport at Adepticon my sentinels had to go in a box as they were too tall, and their antenna broke off. All of them. Time to make up some more carry cases. For many years now I've used plastic tubs lined with 26ga steel to carry my magnetized models. I use hot glue to set the metal in place. Though this worked fine on smaller plastic totes, I don't think the hold is good enough for a larger tote - too much weight. I think some kind of construction a

Angels test. And lictor wip

Done some work last few days on multiple things. Not my most efficient method but hey. So started painting a lictor iv had from a bin buy. Had no talons but had thrse ones of a dnd model i will hopefully work on soon. They are bland detail wise compared but wirkable i think. Its nids and lictors they shouldnt be cookiecutter. There should be variety. Til we see what happens with lictors with the leapers announced. (Sound good to me)   And then blood angels. Or more apprioately my storm

Huzzah I posses the power to cut foam

So I recently bought a proxxon hot wire cutter in a fit of realising I'm hitting 30 and have never made a foam ruin.   Using my very big jiggly totally not smooth wrinkle less brain I decided the best way to go about doing this was drop a hundred quid on something I'd never seen before.      Well after a few hours this afternoon I'm happy to report I kinda know how to work it.   My goal now is to melt my way through many a sheet until I have a 3rd ed esque city

Apr 10 2023 WIP - Dorn, Uniform, Servo-Skull

Rogal Dorn #1. Casting Defect Texture. Previously I laid down the Tamiya putty texture, and added some brass handles. I lost my metal files somewhere... so the flame cuts still need re-working. Using various files, sandpaper, and a hobby knife creates a varied texture. This is too uniform. I'll either re-work it, or hit it hard on Rogal Dorn #2. In law, legal briefs are never done, just due. Just the same in Hobby, there's always more to do--but, I need an army ready for 10th edition upcom

Well that was odd few months.......

So its been a crazy few months in my personal life. The end result has made me a better person and I am very happy the direction my life is going.  But I did bust out the brush and dice getting the Adepta Sororitas out for some boarding action and resumed painting.  Unfortunately I may have to repaint the less than 10 models completed to match the robe technique I'm using for the black robes.

Making the Uniform of the Death Korps of Krieg 143rd Siege Artillery Reg.

10 Year badge today?! Well then.   Making the Mask The Russian GP-5 is a great start. I watched 'Iron warrior's' youtube video and that talked me into making a foam face section with the GP-5 parts. He apparently had followed from Janovich on Etsy and youtube. So, I ordered some 5mil foam and got to work. I'd never done any work with this flexible foam; it's all new. Iron warrior also has a downloadable stencil you can buy to just cut out the mask section. This is very handy. I ha

Krieg Display Board 2023 Pt 7 - The Ritual Site; Campaign Streamers, & Operations Order

I'm going to have to set this up in the basement tonight to get better pics...   WORK IN PROGRESS PICS So, the initial considerations were (1) truck space; (2) tournament imposed (convention center space) limit to 12x structural 3x5' bases; (3) man portability; and (4) entering the technical display category. We figured we wouldn't get a structural display spot as they are limited, and really couldn't transport it anyway, so we'd just go in the 3x2 category. So, I set about making

April 2023 WIP - Creed, Dorn, & Kasrkins

10th Ed. Blues Well, I can wait and paint nothing. Or, I can cast a wide net, hoping something, anything, I paint is actually usable in the new rules. Well, the old malcador infernus will keep coming out to play until she's relegated to legends... but for the most part I think I want fundamentals ready for June 2023: Commander, Infantry, heavy weapons, special weapons, vox, leman russes, etc. I mean the other option is to sit and paint nothing, wait for a meta to emerge and race to catch it

Krieg Display Board 2023 Pt 6 - Forging the Narrative

Narrative Army List. I wanted an actual story to accompany the board. Getting the lore to match up to my armies is more difficult than one would think. Why is Agrippina supplying this? Why is Krieg part of this mission? Anyway, the basic narrative is that Angron is being summoned on Armageddon. I've got the whole thing written out, but in short - 10's of thousands sacrificed in blood daily. Full Divisions are going mad and in open rebellion. Thousands of psykers mind's have exploded (the cl

Krieg Display Board 2023 Pt 5 - Adepticon Showcase, After Action Review

Showcase. We made it two years running! So, after games 1-3, we got the invite to set up from 8:30-11:30PM in the corridor to the event hall with the other displays. It's great to talk with hobbyists over techniques and all their current projects. Notably, the lighting is much dimmer than in the convention hall for the team tournament. So, flame effects show much better.  I wore the Krieg uniform for quite a while, but eventually it was just too hot and I’d been on my feet since

Krieg Display Board 2023 Pt 4 - Spotlights, Sandbags, and 143rd Siege Reg. Uniform

Krieg Display Board 2023. Spotlights. This year I wanted spotlights. The forgeworld version are long OOP, and when they show up on ebay every other year they're about $50+. Zinge makes great spotlights. However, I also need a stand for the spotlight. Kromlech makes a great heavy weapon base with a tri-pod. It's a bit too tall for my liking, but it'll work. I chose to put it on a 65mm base because I wanted to hook up electrical. I gave it a quick zenithal with the airbrush on Castellan

Battle Report: Blood Angels vs Chaos Knights Round 2!

After the absolute kicking I received from Ted's Chaos Knights, I was eager to temper myself against them once more and see if I can beat them - he's the only person in my club to beat my Blood Angels so far, and they won't stand for it! The last game was an absolute whitewash, something like 40 - 95, and so I wanted to approach this one a little better, and using basically the same army I used before. We tried to set up the terrain more like GW's tourney maps, with the 4 large obscuring pieces
