Hey folks, Hopefully not jumping the gun here on the official release of the new game but I know a fair few people are busy on the printers, getting proxies or even classic minis for a new Legions Imperialis force. So, like the thread in the Age of Darkness forum, this is a thread for any WIP work or just hobby chat around the game and miniatures - or anything related really! For starters a bit of an off-piste project that is just in embryonic stages as I test various miniature ranges; a Great Crusade-era Craftworld Eldar force, and this is the first Guardian detachment. I've been reading up on some background and may try and go for a Craftworld that is ultimately lost at some point in the millennia leading up to 40k. But for now they have jumped out of the frying pan (escaping the birth of Slaanesh and destruction of their civilisation) and into the fire (directly into the path of the Great Crusade!) Looking forward to seeing what everyone else has in the pipeline!

Making titans feel more like they do in titanicus in li without a total re-write. So, I'm resigned to the fact that trying to actually cost all the titan weapons would just be a nightmare. I've instead focused on expanding titan weapons to have firing modes that represent the titan crew directing more reactor power than normal to weaponry to get a bit more oomph out of it. The system I've come up with isn't perfect, but essentially every gun has a buff of some sort if you risk pushing the reactor to fire it. The risk is heat buildup damaging the titan (causing a wound) I've also introduced a simple rule to represent titan's servitor clades, so basically for every primary weapon a titan elects not to fire when it activates in the combat phase, it gets a D6 repair roll of 4+ it can apply to repairing downed void shields or repairing a wound. These rolls are made immediately after the titan fires its weapons if any that activation/phase. This is also so that if a titan incurs heat damage, it may have a chance to repair some of it right after. Instead of doing entirely new weapon stats/profiles I chose instead a buff that may apply to existing profiles/fire modes, you're effectively replacing if its a stat or adding if its a weapon trait. Example pushing the reactor to fire a conversion beam dissolutor gives any of the 3 fire modes/range bands an extra shot. But if any of those 3 shot rolls are 1's it takes a wound or wounds. But ya basically the idea will be to look at all the titan weapons and think "if I was able to incur more risk for some kind of buff, what would be cool or make a less than popular weapon better". The first example of this in my mind was wanting a plasma blastgun to actually be able to have a blast template. It's worth noting, some of the traits like ripple fire or power capacitor also require that the titan be on first fire and thus have not moved, my thought there was it represent taking the saved motive power from the leg drives and putting it back into weaponry. My only thought there was some weapons to truly benefit might require not moving, I really wish more weapons in general in the game had some kind of buff for not moving or being on first fire. I don't get for example why most barrage weapons don't require not moving in order to fire out of los, but anyway. I certainly don't think all the added buffs are inspired for every weapon, I certainly struggled with some. A lot of my thinking was based on the fact that, for the most part in the games of LI I've played with titans, both myself and opponent pretty much always just too whatever spat as many dice as possible, so largely gatling/megabolter. If LI had a problem in general its that quality of fire rarely trumps quantity unless there's some very specific thing that needs doing like taking down a building. Quake and shock pulse certainly became more applicable with faq but I don't feel like it shifted what people are likely to take. But my thoughts on buffs would be, if something is more quality of fire than high output, giving it a dice or two more or in the case of plasma ability to add small blast. Now part of balancing the lower output weapons with the ones with a lot of shots, and also having basically a single gets hot system for everything, for now rolls of 1 always count/stick and re-rolls risk compounding that. The red dice indicate how many rolls of 1 will cause a wound, for weapons with a lot of shots that's usually 2-3 1's will equal a wound. And the weapon having accurate or ripple fire (re-roll to hit/re-roll 1's to hit) doesn't really help with heat building because initial 1's still count and its possible to roll 1 again which will also count. Basically heat building up exponential and bad and risky. This is also why I added the servitor clades so one can hopefully bank a repair dice for after. I'm not sure how well this will scale up past warlord, a warmaster has a lot of weapons and are already under-costed/costed on a curve. I'm also playing with a way to make titan's deaths more interesting/scary. Early thoughts were dying with a taxed reactor perhaps adding more range to the explosion/area of effect. So for example a titan on its last wound pushes its reactor to buff a weapon in the combat phase and dies accordingly, lets say for sake of argument the weapon caused more than one wound, could be that for every wound incurred from overheat the turn the titan dies it adds like 2 inches to the blast radius or an extra -1 to the ap of the explosion, or simply a higher likelihood of hitting, currently its 4+ but maybe that shifts to 3+. Lots to consider. I also think its worth considering making all titans 1+ save, I didn't want to touch that or add too much too soon as it'd be overwhelming to take in, but I do think down the line that might make sense trying. Lastly I'd like to either change how combat works in terms of what is allowed to charge a titan at all (infantry) or perhaps add a mechanic that lets titans step on scale 1 and 2 models that they can end their movement over with their base. Don't let any of those ideas scare you, obviously rules can be applied in a modular way, I just think its easier to expand than to try and fix point costs. Anyway, the goal was basically to bring back the feeling of heat and repair management without having to use a terminal or do much book keeping.

I did a survey for epic scale terrain in general last year, but it's still going and I'd love to know what you guys want to see in future terrain. You can find the survey here if you'd like to add your voice! Here is the terrain I've designed so far: They are not in the best situation, on the roof! You can find the collection of epic scale terrain here - it's designed to work with 6mm (epic 40) 8mm (Legions imperialis) and even 10 and 15mm! This is due to the proportions of the large public scale architecture. While the photo above shows battletech minis, the buildings work with legions imperials scale guys too. You can also see the new 3d Printable terrain I've just released. (the golden brutalist building with the mech on the roof, and the small buildings with ducting. The tower here is actually a local Sydney skyscraper I love. I wanted to show people how tall skyscrapers are compared to epic scale minis. The tower breaks apart into separate buildings too, for more flexibility. Also turns into 28mm when you put it on its side! Anyway thanks again and if you'd like to tell me what to design next you can find the survey here

Sunday Preview of next weeks pre-orders For Space Marine there's the missing Terminator Captain as well as various bits from Leviathan including a Heroes of the Chapter type box that will no doubt come with a heft price tag. There is the Space Marine Scout and Eldar Striking Scorpions Kill teams and a selections of kits for Legions Imperialis as well as the new book. What's most interesting to me is that Striking Scorpions do come in a box of ten and not five. This is especially useful to know as it's a good indicator that Mandrakes will get the treatment. I am still tempted to get the new box with Mandrakes and Night Lords but knowing I can pick the Mandrakes up as a box of ten I'm not so concerned about missing out on it or passing it up.

My place for all things Space Marine! I have started to built a small force for the Horus Heresy, after having abandoned Space Marines for almost a decade now. The Nuncio Vox in the new MK6 kit looks too 40k in my eyes , so I have built my own version, for my two tactical squads.

This topic is just a way of generating interest and getting an idea of what sort of numbers we have for creating a Xenos ruleset for Legions Imperialis, using said ruleset as a guide/context for anything we create. In my mind, this topic is a place we can discuss how to implement such things, whether we assign groups of people to each Xenos faction with a project head, then come together to finalise things as a community. Or what have you. So... who's interested?

The die had been cast. It had happened weeks ago, on a world far from the one that Captain Martos of the Death Guard stood upon. Only notionally part of the 3rd great company, his force of a little more than a thousand marines had been the core of a secondary fleet. For years they had screened the flanks of larger fleets, and taken compliance of many lesser worlds unworthy of the attentions of the primary fleets. Officially a position of much prestige, the senior Astartes of such a fleet felt like an exile from the core of the legion. Raised from purely Barbarus marines, they had access to the full range of the astartes war machine. Word had come from the Primarch, and any of questionable loyalty had been purged. While only a handful of marines were removed, entire brigades of the Imperial army disappeared from the rosters of the fleet, as portions of ships vented atmosphere, ships never came out of the warp and forces were left unsupported in their current fight with the numberless orks. Now they had abandoned that nameless world to the orks for now and had come for worlds of the Imperium. There was much for which the realms of the Emperor had to account. —------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Legate Marshal Starvos surveyed the trench lines laid out in front of him. Against nearly any other foe, the layered defenses, kill zones, obstacles and counter attack lanes would doom the enemy. Against Astartes, backed by a million warriors formerly of the Imperial army, it might slow down the first wave. Fortunately, he commanded merely the first line of defense, and the might of an entire Solar Cohort was able to be brought to bear across this world if the Emperor required it. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- While the release of LI is still a few weeks away, I have begun planning on the initial forces for both sides of my LI forces. Unlike my 28mm warhammer projects, I feel like it will be a good idea to have two forces so I can host games using entirely my stuff if required. The marine side will be Death Guard, loyal sons of Mortarion. If Imperial army/militia become available later, they will end up providing cannon fodder support bullet sponges for the Death guard. Opposing the sons of Mortarion will be Solar Auxillia likely to be augmented by a small force of Custodes if they become available. to start each side will get 1 Titan painted in yet to be determined legion colours.
-
With effectively a re-launch of a new scale for armies, I am sure I am not alone in looking a new forces different than my 28mm ones. What are your plans for LI? Currently I am looking at doing Death Guard for my space marine side of the starter box and loyalist solar auxillia for the their side, that way I have two distinct forces and in theory can host games with people not collecting LI. and I am hoping that there a few supplemental boxes like the astartes support box for both sides shortly after release.
-
So the game has launched with Legions and Auxilla as our first factions and we seemingly know of quite a few future releases for those factions. There's been hints on WarCom that the next factions we'll get for LI will be the more "esoteric" factions from the HH. Some obvious guesses would be Mechanicum and Custodes since both were big players in the HH, but the presence of the Word Bearer's "Ignore Dread Aura" pretty obviously brings in Daemons, right? Other than those 3 plus some kind of "Cults/Militia" list (which would heavily step on Solar Auxilla's toes assuming they wouldn't just be rolled in with them) I can't think of any other Horus Heresy factions who could be brought into LI. What's your thoughts on these possible factions, and are there any other potential factions I've missed?

Welcome to the Solar Auxilia! If you are reading this circa 2024 then there's a decent chance you bought the boxset and have the following models: - 2x Solar Auxilia Legate Commander Squads (can also be built as Auxilia Tactical Command Squads) - 8x Auxilia Lasrifle Squads - 4x Auxiliaries with Flamers Squads - 4x Veletarii Squads - 4x Charonite Ogryns Squads - 4x Aethon Heavy Sentinels - 4x Leman Russ Tanks - 2x Malcador Tanks Models are organized into detachments or used to upgrade detachments. The models, when organized into detachments give you the following: - 2x Solar Auxilia Legate Commander Squads (can also be built as Auxilia Tactical Command Squads) - 2x Auxilia Lasrifle Tercios - 2x Auxiliaries with Flamers Squad Upgrades - 1x Auxilia Veletarii Storm Section - 1x Auxilia Ogryn Charonite Section - 2x Auxilia Aethon Heavy Sentinel Patrol - 1x Leman Russ Strike Squadron - 1x Malcador Tank Squadron Note how the Flamers are Upgrades. Upgrades are added to existing detachments. For example, an Auxilia Lasrifle Terciol Detachment can be upgraded to include 2 or 4 Auxiliaries with Flamer Squad models (every two models taking up one upgrade slot of the Tercio’s six upgrade slots). You can choose to use certain models as upgrades rather than use them as a single detachment or two detachments. You could split the Veletarii (or the Ogryns) into two upgrades of 2 models each. You could make a single Aethon detachment with an Aethon upgrade, for a total of four models in the detachment. Detachments are organized into formations, you cannot just make a list out of the units you like. The core box models are (according to Designer Commentary) meant to be used as an introductory, mixed formation - Legion Astranii Class Augmented Spearhead - to expose players to different unit types, rules, and interactions. The formation is not meant for matched play without your opponents permission. There are enough detachments to build all the compulsory detachments for two Legion Astranii Class Augmented Spearhead. The optional detachments and upgrades can be distributed to balance out points. Here are examples: Each army list has the same basic layout. You get to play with all the infantry options, you get one set of smaller tanks and one set of larger tanks, and you get one of the walkers. You could play around with the upgrades, put all the Auxilia upgrades into one list and then put both sets of walkers in the other list; you’ve got options. Add a Warhound to both lists to experiment with titans. They may skew the gameplay experience, being about 40% of the points per side at this point. But what if you want to do matched play, or off-loaded the Astartes, or vice-versa, on-loaded the Solar Auxilia? The good news is that the core box does give such a matched play legal combination; the ubiquitous Solar Auxilia Sub-Cohort. The Solar Auxilia Sub-Cohort requires 1 Headquarters, 2 Core, and 1 Support detachments. Requirement Fulfilled By... Headquarter Legate Commander Detachment or Auxilia Tactical Command Core Auxilia Lasrifle Tercio Core Auxilia Lasrifle Tercio Support Auxilia Ogryn Charonite Section or Auxilia Veletarii Storm Section This leaves the following leftovers: - 2x Auxiliaries with Flamers Squad Upgrades - 1x Auxilia Veletarii Storm Section or 1x Auxilia Ogryn Charonite Section - 2x Auxilia Aethon Heavy Sentinel Patrol - 1x Leman Russ Strike Squadron - 1x Malcador Tank Squadron The Solar Auxilia Sub-Cohort has a lot of optional detachment slots. You can fill one of the support slots with the Veletarii or the Ogryns (whichever isn’t in the compulsory support slot). The Auxilia Aethon Heavy Sentinel Patrol can go in the single vanguard slot; taking the additional 2 Aethon Heavy Sentinel models as an upgrade. You have two battletank slots; in go the Leman Russ Strike Squadron and the Malcador Tank Squadron. The Flamer Squad upgrades can be distributed however you’d like, feel free to experiment! At this point, you’re using all the Solar Auxilia models in the core box set in legal matchplay formation. The points total up to 590. That’s a bit of an awkward turtle because you want 700 points of Solar Auxilia to make a 1,000 point list with 300 points of allies. You do have some options. You can aim for a game around 750 points and ally in a bare bones Legion Demi-company (Legion Command, 2x Tactical Detachments, Dreadnought Talon); this will put you at 755 points (743 if you drop one Flamer upgrade). You can bend the rules by loading up your Astartes with all the upgrades and one battle tank detachment to get to about 917-927 points, depending on the tank choice. Another way you can bend the rules is by taking a Warhound titan for a total of 920 points. The second Warhound puts you at 1250 points, but at that point you’re playing a Titan Legion with Auxilia allies. Let’s take a look at what you can do when you’re ready to expand your collection. You can add a second Solar Auxilia Sub-Cohort by picking up a Solar Auxilia Infantry box. This gets you to 840 points and then you can get to 1,000 points with bare bones allied Astartes and having a Legate Commander in one Sub-Cohort and an Auxilia Tactical Command in the other (puts you at 999 points). Or, you could pick up a Baneblade box. This lets you use all your tanks in a Solar Auxilia Armoured Company. It also puts you at 780 points of Solar Auxilia; you can get to 1,000 with the Legion Demi-company with all the infantry upgrades and dropping your Cohort Legate to an Auxilia Tactical Detachment (actually will end up at 996 points). If you don’t have the Astartes from the core box set, but swapped them for someone else’s Solar Auxilia half, and you picked up a Baneblade box then you’ll have 1364 points. A Warhound boosts that up to the awkward 1694 range. Basically, at this point you have a lot of ways you can go. You can pick up more infantry, more tanks, air assets, titans and/or knights. Experiment, have fun with it!
